Would have him over any other current defender in the world, no question. He's had a few high profile errors over the years (mainly involving Torres) but by and large has been the best CB the premiership has seen IMO.

He's only got a year left hasn't he - I think he showed that if we handle him right he can play regularly enough

Magnificent lunatic bastard

It's not on this clip and I don't know if you remember but years ago against Portsmouth he went up for a corner and basically diving headed the guys foot who was making the clearance. It was an early show of what was to come. The only reason I mention it, was because it was one of the first moments of his no fear attitude.

'tis a silly place
Took a boot in the face from Drogba years ago, Drogba was flouncing his way to the floor to claim the free-kick before he realized he'd actually hurt someone. Memorable, that was.

Oh, it's in that video... and it was his knee, not his boot.

I think I remember that. How can you not admire a guy who doesn't give a shit and puts his body on the line? He makes Big brave John Terry look like the bitch he really is.

I think that he has done plenty of similar things. At-least one is in that clip. He doesn't know fear. Let just hope that he'll be fully fit for the entire next season, and most of our defense problems will be solved.

Not sure why the first thing Moyes did upon becoming United manager was to make Rio sign an extension while Vidic, two years younger, still awaits his
Because Rio's contract would run out soon, making him a free agent soon whereas Vidic still has a year to go.

He's gone from 4/1 to 2/1 to leave United for Munich

I do hope this is just betting bullshit

He actually got up and tried to play on then he collapsed shortly after.

And of course because contract negotiations take months to conclude and Rio's was clearly further along in the process. Moyes likely did very little as Gill was the one handling the contracts previously, not Sir Alex, and there's no reason to assume that setup is going to change. All this talk about what Moyes has or hasn't done is silly. He's one part of a huge organisations his responsibilities will be mostly limited to what takes place on the pitch, training ground and among his staff. The rest of it will simply be giving the ok to various projects/negotiations that have been ongoing for months. We can't let that get in the way of thinly veiled criticisms of Moyes and silly Vidic > Rio arguments though.

More often than not, when the bookies slash odds like that, it's not a good sign. (Could be bollocks though)

Vidic to Munich though - that is interesting. Their defence would be ridiculous.

Why are we going to let him go? Him on form is still one of the best defenders in the world (if not the best). If he goes to Munich, then their team would be even more stronger and almost unbeatable. Unless our medical staff know that he will have injury problems (which I doubt) letting him go will be a great mistake.

We all love United
Apparently Evra (Ando might as well?) could leave, Moyes isn't going to win over alot of the OT faithful if he allows Vidic to go as well

He's not going anywhere. You don't get rid of your best CB and Captain when you join a new club, especially if (and it's still a big if) you plan on seling the vice-captain.

Exactly. Moyes would unlikely be as involved as Sir Alex used to be with regards to contracts, since he's still new. He'll most probably be asked for his opinion of how important he deems a player to be with regards to his plans, while someone else handles the contract negotiations with the player and his agent.

He didn't have any international commitments so he has probably started his pre season checks already.

Carrick had international games and is back today, Vidic probably returned last week in some form.

The errors against Torres was a misjudged bounce and 1 time beaten for pace. Vidic has shut down Torres loads of times. And a few months later Vidic was beaten by Eto'o by a brilliant move by one of the best strikers of the last decade.

And I can't believe that many on here though Vidic wouldn't be the same after his injury. It's Vidic for feck sakes. You think a knee injury would break him?

Vidic returned to top form and steadied our backline especially in the second half of the season. Dare I say it saved our season.

He is still the best around if you consider he can shut down big, physical forwards and shut down tricky continental players as well.

He is the best penalty box CB in the world. I don't remember any defender being more dominant in the air ever really?. Certainly of my generation anyway he has been majestic.

Sure those Torres, Eto'o moments are not his best, but they were world class strikers at the time - Vidic is not the first to be beaten by them.

The Liverpool game, Eto'o moment and injury created a camp in here that Vidic was on the decline. They were all wrong.

Every defender has made mistakes. Nesta got ROASTED in a Derby once against Roma and yet is still considered one of the best CB's still.

You can probably count on one hand the high profile mistakes Vidic has made, but even that aside Vidic will guarantee you defensive solidarity. That is what he does. I have to say that he performed better than I thought he would have last season after all those injuries. That is a testament to how good he is. People like to say 'he has no pace, and he gets found out by quicker strikers' but by and large it's not true.

He's all smiles right now as Djokovic marches on to the next round :)

The Eto'o moment was in 2009 and came at the end of the season where he was unanimously thought of as our best player. No-one thought he was in decline because of it. People just thought me might not recover from an injury that has severely harmed the careers of some of greatest players the game has seen.

As for the suggestion you can count his big mistakes on one hand...that's absurd. He made one of the worst attempts at a "block" this year v Reading (?) which should have given away a penalty in a game which we never looked like scoring another in. Those two red cards v Liverpool were pretty ridiculous, and there were at least two huge gaffes in his only World Cup. Crucial part of one of the best back fives the English game has seen but that World Cup will always be held against him by neutrals when people talk about him as being right up there with the best defenders of his generation. He'll just never be considered that highly by those outside United and Serbia.
