Frank Lampard to NYC FC

Another English talent ignored by Woodward...

All best, Lamps !

America really is a haven for formerly great players with huge reputations. Wouldn't be surprised to see Rio follow Villa and Lampard to the MLS given his media reputation and revenue he could generate given his stature.

It's not solely about the payday. It's also the environment. Living in the US when you're rich is great. It's pretty good even if you aren't rich. New York is one of the top cities in the world and many people would love to live there. After playing professional football for so long it's nice to turn the pace down a bit because the pressure on your body has been massive. You don't want to feck it up right at the end when you're only a bit part player. Better to get similar money elsewhere, play every game and live in a great place whilst doing so. It's ideal. It's also a new life experience. These players have traveled a lot but they've only stayed in hotels and photo shoot sets. They haven't seen the world as such. Sure, they've got plenty of time and money to do so when they're finished but you don't just move to New York for no reason. Playing football there and getting good money for it is a pretty good excuse.

I think it's a great move for him. He's almost 36 now. I like this move a lot better than what Drogba did for example. It's comfortable. No nonsense.

Think people are underestimating just how much Lampard has done. Sure, a lot of his goals were from the penalty spot, but to have as many goals in the PL as Rooney is ridiculous while playing in midfield.

In terms of statistics and trophies won he'll have had a better career than Saint Stevie when all is said and done but won't get nearly as much praise.

This isn't confirmed yet, but I'm sort of shocked they wouldn't give him one last season.

That's because he wasn't as good as Saint Stevie.

True, but I know which career I'd rather have. And it's not Gerrard's.

Trophy wise there's only one winner, but that could be said of a lot of players. Anyway, I hope Frank does well over there, he was a great player.

But you can't rate a players ability on trophies... that's like saying Torres is better than Alan Shearer.

Torres rode the coat tails of others. Lampard was a vital part of title winning sides. The best player in some of those seasons.

Weirdly enough there aren't many aspects in which Gerrard beats Lampard considering how, in my experience anyway, most people are pretty unanimous that Gerrard was the better player. Lampard was quite a bit more prolific and, though it's hard to find reliable sources, most places seem to have them separated by a couple of assists at most. Gerrard's best moments just seem to be more iconic than Lampard's.

Maybe a legend for Chelsea and one of the best in the PL era but lets not get carried away here...

It would have been honorable on Chelsea's part to let him retire at the club ala Giggs or Scholes considering what he has done for the club.

@BarneyLFC, I think he was clearly a superior player to Steven Gerrard.

Fantastic player. Its a good move for him.Always go out on a high.

But I don't understand the decision to sell Villa, specially after the season he's had.Still has a lot to offer to La Liga

Really ? I might have to start going to the NY games if they keep signing players like him. NY FC might be the direction towards football being more popular here. Excellent news.

Im happy NYC FC is up right now. Don't like the Red Bulls. Will have someone to follow in NY.

I live in America but know nothing about the MLS. Would be nice to see if someone could tell me when the season starts and how it works ect?

Season runs from March to November. It's the same points structure as any other league for a win or draw however MLS is split into two conferences, east teams like NY, Chicago, Toronto etc and west teams like LA, Portland, Vancouver etc. I believe the top 5 teams from each conference based on the points they accumulated through the season go to the MLS playoffs where a champion is declared for the season based on that playoff.

It is not the Yankee Stadium, It is just Yankee Stadium.

How many people call Old Trafford "The Old Trafford"?

I had to explain the same thing in another thread. I swear, these Brits, they can't pronounce anything related to baseball and for such a large nation they have awful baseball announcers and zero baseball talent. If only all the little English children didn't grow up playing soccer you might have a chance at winning the World Series one day. Until then, keep dreaming of playing in The Wembley Stadium.

Great footballer and always struck me as a great guy, I think him and Villa will still add something to the MLS. Wish him all the luck!

Thanks.

So will the season happen during the world cup as well? Are matches every Saturday and Sunday? And who do I support? :D

I think they're taking a 2 week break. Most are but there is the odd match during the week usually Wednesday and some Friday matches. I follow TFC and matches are on Saturdays most often. Support your local club.
