Depends how you look at it - for £100 million you get a pair that will dominate the P.L for 10 years - with Fabregas and Schweinsteiger you get players that might dominate for 2-3 years.

Look at it this way - De Gea, Jones, Rafael, Shaw, Pogba, Barkley, Welbeck, Januzaj, Wilson - all 24 years or younger - now that could easily be the start of a team that´could dominate the P.L for 10 years.

I can see few better ways to spend £120 million than Shaw, Pogba and Barkley. Schweinsteiger and Fabregas fine - but they will last 3-5 years at best.
Well you won't get a pair that will dominate the premier league for 10 years, that's your assumption. That's 2 attack minded players, you can't play them in a midfield 2, so you need a third player in that midfield.

Barkley could be an absolute superstar in the future - one of those players you build a side around. Has all the tools - pace, power and an eye for goal.

Long term he's going to be a number 10 though, rather than a central midfielder.
I honestly don't see the hype surrounding him, he'll turn out to be a good player but he'll never justify a price tag being thrown around for him.

Verratti has all the tools to be the next Pirlo/Xavi/Scholes I'd pay anything for him.

The issue we have is none of us know what system van Gaal wants to play, therefore, working out his targets is pretty difficult. Woodward likes to talk so wouldn't take the links to the big names seriously. Van Gaal is his own man and will not let woodwards obsession with a marquee player derail his plans.

Schweinsteiger makes a lot of sense - would truly be his player given van Gaal made him the player he is today. I can see us getting him. As for how we play, I have no idea.

I really don't think we should be in for Barkley. He'd cost crazy money and we already have Mata/Kagawa and Rooney who play where he does.
Everton would want £55m for him. That alone suggests you don't go for him.

Absolutely right. I could certainly see Schweinsteiger and Strootman being the two players van Gaal would like centrally in midfield, with the more creative players ahead of them. Both might be difficult to prise away from their present Clubs, so I'm hoping their existing respect for van Gaal, having worked with him previously, might come into play.

That's what is most exciting about Van Gaal, but I think we need to sign at least two midfielders for him to be able to fully show what his plans are.

I'm neither drunk nor tired. I just don't see why it's beyond the wit of man to consider that we can make more than one signing. I just suggested maybe we do need to look at signing a striker. Suddenly that meant we can't sign a CM or I'm tired or drunk?
Ridiculous post. It's much easier to just admit you got it wrong than backing yourself out of a corner like this. Or just accept it when I say "agree to disagree". It's pathetic.

Go back and read our exchange. We were debating which position is priority.

You said striker is priority, I disagreed and said it's CM. Nobody said anything about not being able to sign more than one player. It's absurd to even suggest I did.

Please don't come back with some snide comment, which picks up on an irrelevancy like you always do, because if you do I'll walk you through the whole thing like a dumb 5 year old kid who can't grasp English properly, which is what you deserve.

Woodward and Van Gaal doesn't seem to have a clue on who their signing. Both are targeting unrealeastic targets such as Hummels, Cesc, Vidal etc, what about Carvalho, Witsel, Kovacic, Mangala and Rodriguez from Wolfsburg, those guys are realistic and would massively improve us.
Sack van Gaal, hire peanuthead.

van Gaal obviously knows his targets. It's up to Woodward to sort it out. van Gaal is preparing for the World Cup so won't be involved in getting our targets until after it. He for sure knows exactly who we'll bring in (in my opinion). Who don't have a clue are the media...

He is not going to be at Everton forever, and at his rate of progression the price is just going to keep going up.

Damnit, Woodward got it wrong again.
Should've hired peanuthead instead of LVG, what does he know about football anyway?

So do Kovacic and Verratti TBF. No slight on Barkley but they'll be easier and cheaper to sign. Plus I feel they're ahead of him in terms of development.
When I've watched Verratti he looks a good player, from playing deep.

Kovacic looks decent again but from what I've seen of him for Inter he hasn't pulled up any trees or really stood out.

Both look like actual central midfield players. Barkley will play in the hole like Rooney or Mata long term I think. He could for me, be another Bale type if handled right.

Cesc no doubt furiously F5ing his twitter feed to see where he's going next year in that one.

It's Spain, that probably means; accept our wages our we'll somehow get the government to divert highway investment infrastructure into the club in some dodgy back-hand deal to pay you more and not have it on the books.

How do you know who they are and aren't looking at?

Nothing is evidently coming from the club - which is the sensible way to go.

As a result the press and random people on twitter are making things up and you are falling for it hook line and sinker.

This place complained when we went public with our transfer business last year. It seems we have learned our lesson, but still they complain.

The old 'smokescreen' - say we're not in for someone when we really are!

In all seriousness, whether it be Kroos or any other player we try to sign this summer, I'd rather us go about it in a discreet way instead of leaking it to every journalist going.

100 million would get a Fabregas-Schweinsteiger midfield and Hummels too. It wouldn't be very good idea to splash all of that on Pogba and Barkley.
No it wouldn’t. Fabregas wouldn’t come here for any amount of money, he is the most unrealistic target for us (Kross is the same). Bastian and Hummels maybe. I would take that though.

We've more chance of getting Fabregas than Hummels if we were in for both.

Although we all love a bit of transfer gossip, these days it's tedious, 99% made up guff.

I would prefer that the first time we hear about something it's a done deal.

Hang on, it's not 2013, why is Fabregas unrealistic now?
He's basically being offered around!

€24m would be a little bit cheeky, wouldn't it? Even if he's in the last year of his contract.

I understand what you mean but if that's how you feel, the twitter thread probably isn't for you...
