What do people make of him? PL experience, and looks solid tonight. Villa need cash and I wonder if we could snap him for a decent fee.

I know he is 29 but knows Van Gaal and wouldn't be a bad option while our younger guys continue to develop.

What do people recon?

He's just having a good game. Not good enough for a top club.

He's a good old fashioned centre half but he has the same issues with being caught upfield, turned and troubled by pace often associated with that sort of player. I reckon he'll be found out in this high Netherlands line.

Played well tonight but having watched him at Villa all year I definitely don't think he's good enough for United.

Though, he wouldn't be expensive and it's pretty clear van Gaal is capable of getting solid performances out of him. Like I said earlier though, he's painfully slow.

Not for me.

I'd prefer to judge him on dozens of times I've seen him play for Villa, when he's been like freshly squeezed shit.

Was an absolute rock today, but it doesn't excuse his largely woeful form for Villa.

 It's incredible how people jump to conclusions on the basis of 1 match. We've had people say Vidal doesn't look that good and a thread on Ron fecking Vlaar.

Seriously? Are we going to discuss ANY player as potential United player now? To me he had decent game and majority of it in 2nd half, that's it. He isn't a very good player. Whether it was because of system or otherwise, he let Costa get behind him far too often. Letting strikers get behind you constantly and then trying to recover and make last ditch tackles is not very good defending.

He's quite good but has no pace. Protected in a back 3 it might work out for the Netherlands, we can aim a bit higher.

There are worse options for an older experienced CB thats rotated with Jones, Smalling and Evans though.

trusted by van Gaal plus the reasons above make this realistic. Would prefer one of the bigger names touted, but not the worse choice if LVG can get the best out of him.

If we were to sign a dutch defender it'd be Bruno Martins Indi

Are you Blind ? Did you not see how everything went Ron with Villa's defence last season ? He would be Vlaar and away our worst defender.

Wasn't he injured for a big chunk of the season? Seem to remember Villa stopped being quite so shit when he came back. Think he'd make a handy 4th/5th choice centre back for us if he were happy with that and we didn't have to spunk too much cash.

Yeah for 5-6 games. In the 12-13 season he was out for 10 or so with injury and you could really see the difference he made after coming back from that.

Saying Vlaar is shite because Villa's defence has been a shambles is stupid. He isn't the entire back four or three/five when they tried to experiment with that. Baker and Clark are inconsistent, lack intelligence, lack awareness and at times you really question if they have a brain. With Jores Okore coming back Vlaar might be lucky enough to have a competent partner. Bennett and Luna are useless, Bertrand is better but we'll see if they can get him on a full transfer. Lowton's form massively dipped and Westwood didn't had a poor season too. On a whole most of the Villa team has been a shambles and Vlaar is one of the few who has actually looked decent.

A good player and would fit in a better team than Villa but I wouldn't be going for him here. Last year of his contract so he could be on the move this summer for cheap or likely next year on a free.
