We were never going to get rid of all the wingers the summer. There was a story a few months ago that he only had a year left on his contract and we'd offer him a new one, so it's no real surprise.

The thing with Valencia is that he's done many things well whenever he plays for us:
  • He keeps possession well (when he's not aiming to cross the ball in)
  • He links up with players very well
  • His movement is good (he stretches the team when needed and then cuts in to make use of the space in the middle)
  • He's a great support to attacking full backs (some of Rafael's best games have involved Valencia)
  • He wins the ball well
  • He makes good runs into the far post to score goals
The one big flaw that Valencia has in the past couple of seasons has been his delivery in the final third. His crossing has been woeful, and given that he spends more time out wide than anywhere, and given that many of our players run into the box once Valencia gets the ball, his crossing has been very poor and resulted in us rarely getting much out of our possession. The funny thing is that he makes some nice key passes in the final third to players running beyond him/between the full back and central defender. However, he crosses the most when in the final third, and since that's woeful, he's almost useless when we need him to create chances for us.

He was so dangerous in the past due to the qualities I previously mentioned along with his dangerous crossing. Now that his crossing his gone, he is of no danger to opposition full backs since his crosses are rarely dangerous.

I hope that van Gaal notices his other qualities and makes the most out of them. Otherwise, Valencia is better off being a wing back than a right winger.
I agree that his crosses are poor last couple of seasons but he dosent do anything much different since he came in.. he alwas fires the ball to to box, but the thing is that he hardly has a support of tevez ronaldo or CM (FFS!) arriving to the box.. we have one player going to the first post and sometimes another attacker somewhere over there, so Antonio doesnt have a chance to hit someone... he dosent have space neither to when he isnt fed by scholes passes.. I think he can still be a decent winger even I see him rather as wing back also.. If we play total voetball under LVG hes gonna have much space, will have more people in the box to hit them and Central midfielder is essential to feed him on the wing and make late runs to the box...

I'm surprised people are surprised. Van Gaal's playing Janmaat, a right back, at RW. I reckon he'll like Valencia.

Great dull uninspiring wing play here we come  seriously we'll never catch up to the big clubs if we continue this way.

There are big problems facing United than wing play mate, if we had been spending like the big clubs and pulling in world class players over the years we wouldn't be facing these problems. How many years have we been hearing about the famous war chest, and yet all we've done is mop up average/decent players. Now we are in the position where the majority of our squad is average. We still haven't replaced Scholes, Keane and now we've lost Rio and Vidic as well. The only position which has been dealt with in the entire squad is GK.

So many players have left this country, or joined other clubs in this country over this period. Look at Modric, Bale and Hazard just over the last few seasons. These are the players we should have been chucking big money at as the dominant club in English football.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't Janmaat play right wing back in a 5-3-2, which is a big difference to right wing?
I was referring to the fact he's playing very far forward in the system, which is basically right wing. Should have gone the whole hog and typed it out.

Even with Scholes' passes coming to him, he always faced a 1-on-1 situation. However, he was much better at 1-on-1 situations back then, and his crossing frequently went past him man. Also, I do agree with you that the movement in the box has been poor during Moyes' tenure, but under Sir Alex's last season, his deliveries still weren't that good, and he had excellent movement and positioning from players in the box.

I just hope van Gaal can provide him with lots of confidence and improve his game. Valencia's done very well against many top teams in his time. Just because he's poor now doesn't mean he's forever poor.

Keep Rodgers at Pool.
Can be a good player again. He's the least of our worries as far as a "get-rid" list. I'd be worried if Young got a new contract.

Its not true, under SAF we played the same shit for at least his last two season. The football was too slow, boring except we won matches. The games this year werent much different from what we played under SAF but the players didnt believe in themselves to win the matches ugly like we did under SAF.. I think he will ressurect all his abilities he has in a new system.. Ofcourse you need to be confindent one on one but stll its different when you have space after scholes´s pass or after cleverley and co´s 15 3m passes from one side to another.., and with paul ending his careeer his movement wasnt that good, and I remember paying Giggs, Carrick and Scholes often playing 4-5-1 even Paul making the play we were so slow and not many people were in the box... He and welbeck will profit from new aggresive aproach, they are great break players both can win the ball and set the counterattack, which is great. They often had no space were to go when all other teammates didnt make the runs didnt support the attack and were lazy as feck, mainly due to prehistorical tactics which we played last couple of seasons under SAF AS WELL..

Compare our season with Moyes to Sir Alex's last season, and I doubt you'd disagree with me when I say that we had more movement in our side under Sir Alex than we had with Moyes. Under Sir Alex, we still played a 2-man-midfield setup, but it had better movement from the players than we had under Moyes' classic 4-4-2 where we were extremely rigid and had barely any movement from anyone.

Valencia has seemed to have lost confidence particularly under Moyes. The same goes for many other players. I'm hoping van Gaal can reinvigorate Valencia and make him play like he used to.

I am quite defending him this season or have high hopes for him for the one but hes completely useless for Eq... Does he have instructions to dissapear and do nothing at all with the ball? Like if someone said to him that he will kill him if he tries to play... when you think hes going to be their best star hes average, hope hes injured or sth because its completely dissapointing these performances from him in Brasil.

Valencia's poor form now damaging other players, and his country. Idiot. Struggle to understand why he's regressed so much.

Coincidentally, that's a completely brainless comment. The last thing anyone would say about him is that he's brainless.

Sent off though. Bugger.
 unfortunate timing.

Fitting end to a pretty poor world cup, really.

The boy could easily have had knee ligament damage there, stupid tackle. He got lucky with an elbow on Sakho earlier then he goes and does that. This after the messing with Sterling pre world cup, what's going on in his head?
