I was laughing at the negative suggestion that we would "settle" for a McCarthy type of player and De Jong would actually be a good signing for us.

McCarthy is clearly a better player than De Jong, not to mention also much younger. As has been said he is very under rated on here. It doesn't make sense that you could think that De Jong would be a good signing for us yet laugh at the idea of us settling for a player of McCarthy's quality.

De Jong is a class DM, and I would like to see us employ one sitting behind two central midfielders. McCarthy, while good, is in my eyes not a good enough central midfielder for us - if that makes sense.

Agree that McCarthy is clearly better. Would not be to glad to sign a City reject.

No it doesn't, because McCarthy would be just as good behind a midfield two, but what set them apart is the fact than McCarthy is clearly the better footballer. If we sign that type of midfielder, I want one that can play football as well, I hate players that is as one dimensional as De Jong.

I'd be pretty damn excited if we went in for McCarthy. Even De Jong - at least we know exactly what we'll get from him and that he'll make us much more difficult to play against.

Chelsea- Costa, Fabregas, Pilipe Luis, Courtios (Finished 3rd, CL Semi Final, they have massively upgraded their squad)
Arsenal- Sanchez, Khedira, Debuchy (Finally won silverware, and they want to build on that, and win the premier league)
Man City- Mangala, Fernando, Sagna (Already stacked with world class players, won 2 trophies and have improved squad depth)
Man Utd- Herrera, Shaw, Vermaelan, De Jong (We Finished 7th, our worst premier league finish ever. First time out of the top 3)

It seriously looks like we have zero interest in Vidal, on the other hand Vermaelan and De Jong have both been heavily linked with us, so they're the deals that seem most likely right now. But what a shite transfer window this would be if that was the case, we finished 7th...so realistically we would need to out spend everyone and bring in 3 more more quality players!.

Obviously we might still sign other players, but ffs

You've did the old 'depict the worst case scenario for United and compare it with the best case scenario for everyone else'

And I like that type of player (As a DM because I think we'd do well with one - but that is whole other discussion for another day) - thus my opinion makes sense!

McCarthy is at his best playing as a DM. He can do everything De Jong does plus he covers the ground quicker and is much better on the ball.

We need a CB and a Winger.

I say we should forget about midfielders(leave it for next summer) and just go to war with the ones we have. Van Gaal will make it work.

We need a Winger. Di Maria would have been the perfect signing(much better tham Vidal in my opinion).

What other good wingers are available?

Why would they sell him then? He has hardly all that when he was at City anyway so what makes you think he will be a success here?

Why would Barcelona sell Alexis Sanchez? I don't think Arsenal care why now that they've got their man. Just like I doubt they'll care about Khedira or Ozil having been surplus to requirements at Madrid.

I don't think we'll sign De Jong but how highly he was valued by other managers is irrelevant. If Van Gaal wants him then so be it.

While it is pretty much the worst case scenarios for us, for the others I feel like it's the most likely scenarios. At least Liverpool look pretty weak after selling Suarez and replacing him with Lapland, lambert, can, markovic and going after more average players like Davies, bony, etc.
Also I don't think those signings improve City really, at least not starting 11. Arsenal and Chelsea will be hugely improved, as will we now that we have a proper quality midfielder.

It's better looking at it like that, as it can only get better, if we indeed do end up bringing a few world class players here. So far the signs are negative which is why I'm looking at it in a negative way.

It also saves me from a lot of disappointment,

Wow.......The difference between Sanchez, Ozil and Khedira compared to De Jong is huge.

Nurse saying it's a smoke screen could mean we've someone else in mind. But then if we were using Vidal as a smoke screen - why the feck would we so adamantly deny our interest.

Woody: Hey I know, let's use Vidal as a smokescreen

*picks up phone to journalist*

Woody: Hello?
Journo: You interested in Vidal
Woody: Absolutely not.

*hangs up*

Woody: Oh bollocks!

Genuinely made me laugh out loud that mate, thanks!

Nobody is saying otherwise. It's pointless to not be interested in players because a previous club didn't want them anymore though, as those examples show.

The only opinion that matters is that of our manager and if he rates De Jong then I'm all for it. He wouldn't be my choice but Van Gaal knows a lot more about him than anyone on this forum.

You forgot to mention the most important change: van Gaal instead of Moyes. We finished 1st the season before last, simply doing 'last years position + signings = next seasons position' doesn't work in reality. Also, there's every chance we'll sign more/differently/better than the signings you listed for us.

Jesus. Smokescreens again. Still waiting for someone, anyone, to explain to me how they work.

Its weird after reading old Van Gaal quotes about his huge admiration for Vidal, we wouldn't be interested. I mean Van Gaal tried to buy him before and couldn't but now he's at a club that has the stature and money (well should have anyway) to make it happen so why wouldn't he go all in?.
Knowing us, i'm not going to get my hopes up with Vidal (quite the opposite knowing us) but i have a sneaky feeling that this whole Vidal thing might not be totally over.

So yeah, that "spokesperson" that BBC was reporting earlier was just the Marotta interview.

Maybe it's because Van Gaal has a system in mind to suit our current squad and maybe Vidal doesn't fit that system. Van Gaal seems to be all about the system. I'm not saying this is the case here but it could be one potential explanation.
