Left-footed centre back capable of playing left back - makes sense there. Fairly young and inexpensive too. Think I'd probably prefer him to Vermaelen in all honesty although that's likely because I've seen much less of him...

The Sporting president has apparently confirmed that there are bids for him.

He was very good in all the Argentina WC matches I watched (I missed the game vs Bosnia).

...and that is all I know about him.

Looked decent enough in the world cup I thought. Did a rabona out of his own penalty area in one game, not sure how I'd feel seeing him trying something like that for us mind :nervous:

Edit: found it.

Certainly would make sense, can he be an effective wing back? Right now he could be good back up for Young there when not playing at CB.

He has started following those you mentioned and it would make sense. Hardly seen him outside the world cup though.

I was very impressed with him at the world cup but obviously that's no trustworthy barometer. Looked passionate too and the most distraught of them all when they lost the final. Always have a soft spot for players who wear their heart on their sleeve.Know nothing else about him. Hopefully Marcos or one of our resident Portuguese (where he plays) can give us some insight about him.

He isn't that good, had a solid World Cup to be fair to him but still, we can do better.

He's not a poor player but has too many concentration lapses and disciplinary issues, Southampton is about his level.

I wonder if he was showing off or extremely uncomfortable with his right foot. Probably showing off though.

Left footed, plays LB and CB in a flat back four. Guess he'd be ideal as the LCB in a three man defence? Decent world cup as a left back but otherwise know little of him.

Just seen somebody on Twitter tweeted that he started following Manchester United, Wayne Rooney, RVP and Januzaj all on instagram. All his last follows as well.

Southampton been after him apparently as well.

Looks like he has yes, if the screenshot I've seen is genuine.

The last time I read something like this was in fact yesterday afternoon, when an apparently reliable media outlet in Barcelona (Rac1?) started following one Thomas Vermaelan. We know how that's ended up.

If we sign him, I assume we perhaps wouldn't pursue Blind? If we actually are that is.

He was Argentina's best defender at the World Cup I thought, wouldn't complain seeing him at United

Played well in the WC, I guess him or Blind would be similar buys in that they are really LB's who'd be used in the LCB role of our new back 3.

Do you see potential there for him to improve at all?

Yeah but not greatly, don't think he'll ever be at a top top club. He's better suited to left back anyway IMO, think that's where he'll be used if he ends up at Saints.

Southampton currently have a bid in for him of around £13.5m apparently, so the fee will be somewhere around there.

Surely you guys are looking for a starting CB, not back-up?

It might well be this guy plus another given the number of defenders who've left this summer.

Surprised to hear he's actually a CB, thought he did very well at LB at the WC. His crossing looked particularly good. Would be a logical addition as we're thin in defense and he can cover both CB and LB, an alternative to Blind perhaps.

Rojo...well where do i start. Sporting fans have a love/hate relationship with Rojo.

He is a very professional player and respectful towards the club since we saved him from his Spartak Moscow career stage nightmare. He is a very physical player. He´s pacy and a very good man marker. I think he is better as CB rather than LB. Simeone and Maradona disagree though. Problem is... Sporting isn´t Argentina. He has performed way better as CB rather than LB at Sporting.

He can be an absolute beast and dominate games in a flawless way. But then there´s the inconsistency. He is very prone to positional errors and concentration lapses. He is also a complete nutcase. He´s been sent off so many times in very stupid fashion. He has a very poor disciplinary record. It´s always the same thing with Rojo. He gets sent off and costs us a game and he starts getting booed and people at the stands say that we are better off selling him. But then he comes back and plays spectaculary again for 5 or 6 games till he does the same crappy judgement errors.

Key issue with Rojo is that he needs a mentally strong and disciplinarian manager. A manager with personality. It´s not a surprise that Rojo´s best phase at Sporting was last year with now Mónaco manager Leonardo Jardim. He was a very strict manager. I think Van Gaal could control and improve him even more. Ronaldo Koeman, with what he showed at Benfica, i highly doubt that.

Would you say United or Southampton are closer to his level Sly?

Like i said in my post, although Rojo is a talented player (as he showed last year with us and in the World Cup), it´s very important for him to have a strict with strong personality manager. Van Gaal fits that description. I think he can improve him even more. Rojo (if he gets rid of the concentration and positional errors) can be a very interesting player for a top team. He´s young, tall and physically strong. Not injury prone. Can play CB and LB with reasonable efficiency. Is very good at defensive and offensive set pieces. Scores goals. He´s physically a rock. He has to be moulded like Leonardo Jardim was doing last year. His disciplinary record is a big handicap. With the right manager perhaps he can continue to change his way.

I like that. I have a soft spot for nutcases though

You won´t like it when he gets sent off after Joey Barton winds him up ;)
Who said we had to teach him Joey's bastardized version of English?

I would worry more about the likes of Diego Costa, who is a master at winding up defenders.

Barton doesn´t need to use his scouse/french accent to wind up someone. You make a good point about Costa though. A Spanish/Brazilian nutter against an Argentinian nutcase sounds like a good prospect (better take note for betting purposes)

Is it strange I have never heard from him? What club does he play for?

Sporting.

Also to the point he would be an excellent signing for us in a LCB/ LWB/ LB position. Basically a more talented version of Blind or Bernat.

But a less intelligent - speaking in terms of football. I'd rather have Blind personally, for the fact he's more versatile and would already know the philosophy of van Gaal.

At the right price why not try? He would probably cost no more than £10m - £12m and could be a hit. He was quality at the World Cup and going by Sly's words he is quite a capable defender. We need to do it more often - try and buy a supposedly good player for a decent fee, take a risk. Even if he doesn't work out that well we would recoup most of the fee.
