I know it's a Waste of Di Marias qualities to put him there, but can't see him coming in instead of Mata or one of the strikers YET. If he does, it's a bold statement from LvG. ;)

I am more concerned about Anderson. Playing him means we are down to 10 from the kick off.

I know what you mean, it's hard to see us doing much with this midfield, unless it is some individual qualities from our 4 star players...

I agree with all that. Doesnt mean lvg will change it. Fwiw i dont think we will get another midfielder. I agree ADM in a midfield two is not good, but lvg is intent on the 352 being best overall. He said ADM may mean they can change the system, but he also said that this was a process. That means it will take time. Which is why i said itwill be here for a while, because lvg said it would.

Assuming no more purchases. If we went 433 ADM could be on the left of the cetre 3 as he wwas at madrid, but we do not have the wingers necessary to fill the two wide positions, lvg has already said that, ironically name dropping ADM as a winger for that system. So, we could put ADM on the wing in a 433, but then we do not have the midfielders for the 3 in the centre, we only have 4 cm's (assuming clev and ando go) that isnt deep enough squad to always use the 433.

If we get another midfielder this will probably change.

But we havent, we probably wont. So when i say this, its not because im acting as if i 'know what will happen' i'm just listening to what lvg has said on a number of occasions.

I suggest you do the same, stop clasping your hands over your ears shaking your head and muttering to yourself 'but the diamond...the diamond will work!.
To be honest, the main difference with the 4-4-2 diamond and the 3-5-2 is that instead of having a central defensive midfielder, we have an extra centre back. I wouldn't be surprised if we did see a Herrera/ Di Maria partnership with one of the three centre backs instructed to drop in as somewhat of a very deep DMF(most likely Jones) when we don't have the ball and the four behind them reverting to a back four shape. It's all about the instructions they are given(ie. When he is there, you are here). It wouldn't be a problem going forward because Di Maria and Herrera are more than capable of handling that aspect. The two full backs in such a formation also play basically as wing backs due to the lack of width with the diamond. It's essentially the same formation and we may see the diamond where LVG just refers to it as a 3-5-2 in the same way as he also refers to a 4-2-3-1 as a 4-3-3(where the difference in them is that the two wingers are instructed to sit abit deeper more like attacking midfielders). This would make a lot of sense and would solve the problem of our midfield being too defensively open IMO. I definitely wouldn't put it past LVG to devise such a system.

I actually hadn't thought much about it in that detail before, but it's certainly food for thought.

Perhaps. However, one of lvg's love for 3 at back recently is not just to have roo/rvp/mata all play but it prevents the 'one on ones' with inexperienced centre backs. It could be that rojo will actually solve that, depends how highly he rates him.

The other issue with changing from 352 to a diamond are the personnel he has chosen as the wingbacks. Shaw and rafael would do well in a diamond as a more traditional wingback, however, with only 2 out and out cb's i cant see young and valencia doing a job as the 442 diamond wingbacks as they dont have the defensive aspect of the game.

As i say, any of these formations (442d, 4312, 433) i think are not only better, but they will be eventually what we adopt...but thats a 'process' and with all levels at utd training with 352, i dont see that process being a quick one

You make a good points and I agree as LVG has also said having 3 CB's also allows less space between them and thus less gaps to exploit. It's just a theory I had regarding how LVG would make the Herrera-Di Maria partnership more defensively secure as that's probably where Di Maria will best fit into and likely play in the 3-5-2 unless Mata is dropped. I thought maybe LVG didn't favour rafael and had Valencia as first choice but seeing as he has been confirmed as still injured, the jury is still out on that. Also I'm positive Shaw Will start ahead of Young when he is back too. Also if we are to have a back 3 of Jones, Smalling and Rojo I believe Rojo and Smalling would be very much capable of acting as part of a back four there if what I said has any truth to it. Bear in mind, Jones will also be very deep in this formation so the back 4 would have a good level of protection with him there, too. I've noticed he has come into quite an advanced position many times to defend(somewhat like a DMF) since we have implemented the 3-5-2 and perhaps that is under LVG's instructions. In theory it it will be a 3-5-2 but I'm sure LVG will have a lot of ideas and instructions drilled into the players that we don't even see and thus why it is taking them so long to get used to it. IMO I think that something like that, not neccessarily exactly how I imagine it however, would be the best way to make up for the problem of being overrun in the midfield defensively and even if I'm not right, there will be a little tweak in the system somewhere to address the problem in all likelihood. This is just my guess as to how it will work if we are to remain with it.

Can't wait just over 12 hours away and great to hear earlier that Di Maria will feature, hope he starts. Disapointing that Rojo misses out again hope he can get that work permit sorted asap. Herrera missing out again is terrible would of love to see him with Di Maria and Mata. Hopefully Di Maria will lift the team I think we will win but it be close 1-2 to us

It should of beat Sunderland, but not played on paper unfortunately. Just hoping Di Maria adds a spark and high tempo/speed to the play rather than our slow side to side we've seen in the games so far.

That midifield will get over-run by Burnley. 2-0 to Burnley with that team.

Goodbye 3-5-2. No one likes it, players or fans. Hello Ajax 4-3-3.
    2-5 Man Utd.

Everything adds up to us losing this one.

Burnley fired up, being back in the Prem, home fans screaming for blood.
United in a mini-crisis, injuries and shit form, still haven't won yet.

I predict Di Maria getting kicked and hounded all over the park and they scrape a 1-0 from somewhere. Much like last time they played us at their place.

Injuries+departures in MF are really worrying me. This game is extremely important. We beat them and build confidence and momentum combined with injuried players returning, then we can finally enjoy the season.

Should we go out like this, I predict a high scoring smashing in our favor. Our defence will let it slip a couple of times and we may even see ourselves going down first, but we'll just outscore them. Which is the philosophy I think we should adapt throughout the entire season. It's clear we're doing nothing to the extent of signing a world class CM or CB, so we should just do what Liverpool did last season. Our defence is no less garbage and our offence is no less class. We should focus on outscoring our opposition, rather than tiki-taka and outplaying them.

If that's the approach we take today, I predict a 2-5 our way, maybe even higher, say 3-5 or 2-6.
Or something along those lines.4 or more goals total definitely.

I think to win this game is very important, We need it not because it has too much riding on it, but the fake pressure created by the press will be too much, I remember how moyes was given an easy ride, but LVG wont be given an easy day in pee. There is an international break in between, if united are unable to beat swansea and not sign a top top player, United will be lambasted in press for the next two weeks. There will be Huge pressure built up and confidence will be completely smashed. We need a win may it be a last minute 1-0 or a hige thumping 5-0.

rojo cant play and mata is injured i think. 5 goals is a bit high a number too. Good luck on your prediction though.

I don't think Rojo is eligible to play just yet, but other than that I like this line up. Could seriously do some damage to Burnley.

Mata is injured? You better be kidding me
    No news about it anywhere.

Also I didn't know about Rojo being ineligible. Honestly dreading another game with Young on LB. Maybe we should tell him it's a friendly and he'll start playing better than Messi again. Because he's Cleverley-tier in official matches.

    Think he meant Herrera there
He resumed training earlier this week and it's implied he'll be available for today.
