Smalling is a joke. I liked him when he first arrived, but he's gone backwards. We won't achieve anything this season with this defence.

Smalling is fecking braindead. Why get the first booking? Hart held onto the ball for a long time, so everyone (bar Smalling, of course) should be back to cover. Insane decision to get a booking for that in a derby. Then go flying into a tackle - jesus. That being said, what does it take for City to get a booking? 3 or 4 clear bookings not given their way. Oliver is having a shocker, for both sides.

Matter of time before city score, no way we'll get anythIng from this. They should've had 2 penalties as well.

More worringly for us, di Maria yet again has been gash!!!

What can any manager or anyone do when your central defender decides to take a booking at 30 min by blocking the gk kick. That was stupidity of the highest order. I've always liked smalling... Thought he was our best defender. But this may have just ended his long term career with us on top of all his injuries.

So then. This is quite a mess we're in now. Smalling could have cost us the game here with one of the most idiotic defensive displays i've seen in some time.

Not happy with that half at all. We did well to keep possession but gradually we've been just using it pointlessly. When we get near their box there's no urgency or purpose in our play to threaten their goal. Now after that red card we've been making mistakes galore. We're asking for trouble if we keep sitting back and trying to "defend", and it feels like heart in your mouth time when they come at us. We've got to be positive and let our offensive players keep us in the game. It's only gonna end one way if this continues.

The replay clearly shows the opposite of what you just described.
have to disagree, clearly shows he kicks his thigh, and yaya looks off balance before the contact comes.. dunno wat else thier is to say,
probably by rights it should have been a penalty, but i dodnt think yaya had is body balanced enough to take advatage of the chance anyway

Guys , I think the whole "philosophy" of LVG is wrong, we do not press high up the pitch , the defensive line is too close to the center line , the 4-4-2 diamond formation is stupid , and we are using too much long passes (most of them wrong)....

They were both penalties, so we're lucky in that regard. Smalling is utterly stupid. We wont finish this game with 10 men.

A City win is all but guaranteed, the only question is by how much. Important to avoid a historic thrashing.
There is nothing to suggest we are going to receive an historic thrashing

Smalling's first yellow card. I still just can't believe how stupid he can be.

The ref is a feckity feck. Absolute disgrace, makes you think there's truth to the rumours that major sporting games in all codes are fixed. And Gary Nev - just shut your gob if you can't comment with any intelligence on the game.

You were fine against Liverpool but you're sounding like a donkey here.

Bring off Di Maria, but not sure who should come on. Di Maria just don't seem up for it.

Be a long second half. Guess we'll have to sit back and try and hit them on the counter.

Was an uncharacteristic decision by Smalling to dive in. Normally he'll stay on his feet. First yellow was stupid, though.

I personally think Hart should have been off too. From when was it acceptable to square up with the ref and put your head into him? Ridiculous

If we can get a draw out of this now, i'll be happy, although I think they were more than beatable if we had 11 men on the pitch. We'll have to stay compact and narrow, and hopefully we'll be able to keep a clean sheet.

I've said it all along - he's like a good lower league player that wil have a really good game against PL opposition every now and then.

Others will start to catch up with the likes of us.

He didn't kick his thigh, his foot was on the ball. His leg goes THROUGH Toure's.

Park the bus and try and nick it. If we're lucky, Di Maria, RVP or Rooney might yet have a moment of brilliance left in them.

Can't really blame the ref for not giving a penalty against Fellaini. Looking at it initially it does look like he gets the ball rather than kicking Aguero's foot into the ball. However we had a massive let-off with the second penalty call. Rojo went to clear the ball not knowing that Toure was going to beat him to it. It was a stonewall penalty and the referee bottled it. He would have given it if he hadn't sent off Smalling earlier.

Not sure we can complain about the ref. They should have had 2 penalties, one with Rojo getting sent off.

Smalling is brain dead. The guy is a moron. Every single game he switches off at vital moments...he's thick as feck...it's frustrating as there's a decent player there but his concentration levels are atrocious. Absolute cock.

Gary Neville is so fecking quick to call 'penalty'. Toure was going down like a sack of spuds before Rojo was near him.

    We'll nick this 1-0.
Milner outwitted him with ease. Smalling shouldn't have been anywhere near the right side of the pitch to make that tackle. He gets dragged out of position far too easily but I suppose when you're playing without a right back, that will happen more often. As for Neville, he's just being his usual arsehole self, trying to be Mr. Neutral.

    Across the Universe....from Old Trafford.
    From my point of view...

Valencia not doing as bad as I thought he would.
    Fellaini showing some balls again.
Shaw doing really well, hope he keeps it up.
Smalling is an idiot. Idiot. Idiot.
    Thank feck for De Gea.
Those two incidents were not pens.
The matchday thread is a depressing place. Some of you guys need a shot of whiskey or a joint or something.
good assessment over all. a lot are already on whiskey, joints and piss...thus their posts...

Maybe you're watching a different replay them. He gets his leg between Yaya's and kicks the ball away and Toure is already falling over like a flailing sally.

Oh come on, both of Smalling's bookings were justified and he's denied City at least one debatably clear penalty. Neville is just doing his job, don't expect constant pro-United reteric from an ex-red who now represents what is supposed to be an impartial sports journalism company.

What if he scores the winner in three consecutive champion league finals.
Champions league? With this direction we will sooner play championship qualifiers than champions league final ffs.

How did Hart get away with head butting the ref?
Lol wasn't quite a head butt! But he should have got a fecking bollocking like Rooney (captain) did when asking Oliver what the difference was with Zabeleta! Plus how Clichy never got booked is just weird!

He is terrible and have zero positional awerness. Smalling's stupid tackle wouldn't have happened if Valencia didn't miss his position.

    Smalling was an idiot there.

Get Herrera on for Rooney, who is his usual self after a break.
