even if we judge them only by stats, I'm pretty sure last season was the first time in last 5 or 6 seasons in which Ronaldo had more goals than Messi. the gap between them will only become more evident when they finish their careers. Messi will be the one holding all the most important records and who knows, maybe even the world cup trophy. Ronaldo most likely won't come anywhere near that unless Messi finish his career tomorrow.

Given their binary dominance for the better part of a decade, its hard to say there's much between them. I thought this much would be blatantly clear by now.
Messi at his best was a better player than Ronaldo at his best (and this comes from a very big fan of Ronaldo). I think that this is clear both from their overall play and from stats.

However, Ron has been better for last 18 months or so. Bizarrely enough, Ronaldo is having his best part of career when he's 29-30 while Messi was at his best when he was 25-26. When we'll talk for them decades from now, the only way for Ronaldo to be rated as much as Messi is if his longevity at top form us higher than Messi's (Ronaldo IMO can keep this form for another three years, while I think that is unlikely for Messi despite being younger) but at their absolute best, Messi clearly wins IMO.

I don't want to beat a dead cat here.. but didn't we have a fecking Ronaldo v Messi thread for all this shite?
I've asked people to use the appropriate threads a million times before - even last week - but no-one listens. It works for the android/apple, xbox/ps4 threads perfectly, but posters in these ones prefer to ruin all three instead.

Why are you laughing? What he says is absolutely true. Even when most people talked about how Messi's last season is poor, he was still 2 goals shorter than Ronaldo and had like 7-8 more assists than him. Fact of the matter is, Ronaldo isn't better than Messi and the only two seasons I would consider him better were 2006-2007 and 2007-2008, but that's because Messi was too young back then.
Ronaldo played 1 game less and scored 3 more in league and overall in same number of games scored 10 more.
Overall across all the seasons there isn't much between the two and Messi is hardly any better than Ronaldo.

In fairness to Messi, he was on course to beat the 73 goals he scored the following season. He managed 46 overrall in the league and 60 in total and would have surpassed it had he not gotten injured against PSG. It was so badly mis-managed by Barcelona he never really fully recovered till this season, a good 18 months.

Barcelona have regressed further since then and he's now baring the brunt of not only being their main forward, but the creative hub of the side too. I don't think Barcelona would be anywhere near as high as they are in the league if he were replaced with anyone else, including Ronaldo.
:lol:they are second, you think they would be fifth or lower without messi?

Frustrating night so far. Nearly there for so many balls but a combination of the runs not being on point or the balls. In the 2nd half it seems the latter but moments in the first half were definitely the former.

What a player, proud to have seen him in a United shirt.

Impossible to defend him when his team is on the counter. His speed, agility and intelligence of movement is absurdly good.

2 goals and if Bale and Pepe slid him in earlier it should have been 4 for him in this half alone on a difficult performance. Ruthless.

I am pretty sure Ronaldo does this purposely, play shite, score 2 and then late evening log on to redcafe and read his thread with his trademark smirk

Its not entirely bizzare because at those respective ages, their club hit its prime.

Bizarre was more for Ronaldo. Usually at his age you expect players to start declining, not continue improving. He's a beast.

I doubt that we will see Messi again playing as good as he played 3 years ago (regardless that in current level he is still easily on top 2)

I watched the whole game. Ronaldo was absolutely fecking horrible, he wouldn't even trust himself to dribble the ball anywhere. Then... he scores 2 goals. He defies all understandings of football with his achievements and records this man

The Ronaldo vs Messi debate is very similar to Pele vs Maradona IMO.

Messi (Pele)* holds all the stats and things/awards won while playing sexy football. But Ronaldo (Maradona) just makes you see football in a whole different light, and he's done it on different levels (Man Utd/England and Madrid/Spain). We're spoiled with these two talents and its unfair to choose "who's the best", but at a push I just like Ronaldo that little bit more. Just as I like Maradona that little bit more.

*I know the obvious comparison should be Messi as Maradona but here I'm talking of things won over the other.

I'd definitely have it the other way around. What do you mean about seeing football in a different light?

He could easily reach Messi's mark this year. Madrid have at least another 25 games this year in all comps, possibly several more depending on their CL run. He's had 22 appearances so far this year and has finished at 55 appearances in previous years, so in theory he could wind up with 80 goals in all comps, especially as they're in the World Club tournament.

Real has 30 more matches this season, minimum. So yeah, at current rate he could well break Messi's record of 2011-12. I expect him to slow down at some stage though and so will Real. Him reaching Messi's La Liga record tally looks more achievable now however. Needs only 25 in 24 games for that. Yes, goal a game is 'only' for him :)
If Real Madrid reach semis of CL or beyond, progress deeper in domestic cup and he ends up playing 60 games like Messi did in 2011-12, it is not difficult imagining him scoring more than 73.

I think Ronaldo knows he can break the record, so will probably want to play as much as possible. Even if he slows down to something horrible like a goal a game, he will still threaten the 73 goal mark given his blazing start.
