If City, Chelsea or PSG choose to sell one or more of their assets (eg, toure, oscar, zlatan/lucas/veratti) they would be able to afford the fee IMO.
If they are willing to sell verratti, they can have Pogba, and we should take Verratti.

To be honest with you, I would almost prefer veratti as well, he is a deep lying, playmaking CM who isnt shy to tackle and reminds me of Gundogan (who was my #1 choice for our CM before his injury)

Honeslty, I don't think we will sign Hummels, Pogba, Reus or Bale but I hope that if they do leave, then it isn't to another premier league club.

Seems like Hummels is the muppet darling of January. Will take a lot to get him.

Previous experience usually means we won't get him. The longer the muppet thread, the least likely they are signed. (Thiago, Vidal, Sneijder, Hazard etc.)

Duncan Castles (who is a bellend) just wrote that we offered to take Adebayor as part of a deal for Bale.
What a fall from grace that is. Rio once said that Adebayor (in his Arsenal days) was the most difficult striker to defend against. Great talent with an awful attitude.

Winston Reid must have done a lot right in those 16-17 Hammers-matches I havent seen this year- because the few I did see - he was nothing out of the ordinary :)

He's free and the day after he signs he's prob worth 10m. He must be considering he's done alot better than any of our CBs this season and we'd expect that for them.

Not surprised by his comments today. I dont expect us to bring anyone in which will be a mistake....one that we could very well regret come the end of the season.

That defence is nowhere near the standard required for CL Football and i just do not fancy us to perform well enough to guarantee a top 4 finish. If we make it, its cause others will have thrown it away.

Or, you know, we can actually hit some real form, start scoring and by our own merit deserve that c.l spot.

To be honest, these days it's our ability to create chances for our forwards that worry me most.
Currently, its clearly a concern but i think that will change. Its the defence that worries me. Although, LVG may be prioritising keeping the ball at the cost of taking less risks leading to less goals conceded but also less chances created.

All in all, a mistake not to strengthen defence.

Someone replied to me (dont know who) regarding not getting the quality we need. You dont think there are defenders out there better than what we have? I think there is - and plenty at that. Yes, we may want the absolute A-List in the summer but we are still going to need a strong squad to compete for trophies - Jones, Evans, Blackett, and McNair are not good enough to fulfil those squad roles. So, in reality, im saying we need our nailed on starters (more likely summer deals) but also our squad strenghtened (its those players i think we can get now).

I hope LVG was just doing some PR in the press conference in order to save a few million quids while negotiating for signing defenders. Otherwise, he's making a serious mistake by not making more serious efforts in looking for defenders. That defensive brigade we have is a disgrace for a team aspiring for CL football; they are the dead weight preventing us from into going all out attack.

That will be the excuse anyway. We could pay a bit over the top to secure one of those players now. It will be more expensive to fall outside the CL again.
How on earth do you know we could do that?

If we offer Dortmund £40 million for Hummels and they say no then that's that. That's without even considering whether or not he wants to leave a club he has a great relationship with.

If our targets are available we will sign them. If they're not then we won't. You can't accuse this United administration of failing to put their money where its mouth is. Woodward, for all of his teething problems, certainly wants to spend money.

I'm quite surprised that some people genuinely thought there was a realistic possibility that we made serious signings this window.

Strootman, the midfielder Van Gaal wants to buy happens to be coming off the back of a long term knee injury. Hummels just isn't happening this month. By all accounts we want a right back, but if the likes of Clyne and Coleman are genuine targets then we're not getting them this month either, unless people think it's wise paying up to £30 million for them? Which of course, it isn't.

Buying bog standard defenders that are no better than what we already have is a waste of resources and squad space. We've got four first team central defenders and all four of them are now fit. They're not conceding very many goals either.

I agree, it is our failure to create enough chances/putting away the few chances we actually get that's costing us at the moment. 7 goals shipped in 11 matches is not too shabby.

Are you serious now? Football is business first of all. Every player on the earth has a price. If we had offered Dortmund £40 million for Hummels he would be ours for sure imo. I dont think we want to use £40 million on Hummels, thats to much.

We are not Real Madrid, that pay the asking price without any question. We try to get the best deal and we dont want to pay over the top for anyone. Its not about if a player is available, its more about what we think the players value is and what we want to spend to get the player.

What I am proposing now is that we because of fear of losing CL again, will could act as Real Madrid, and get at least one of the players we want and need now. Its only about money, not if they are available. I guess that available in LvG mind means right price.

Except it doesn't really matter what you offer Dortmund, they won't sell unless they know they will be able to replace and in January that is difficult.

Oddly enough, many others complain that we always seem to pay over the top for most players we sign, and not just because of last summer.

You know, some players could be unavailable, though I dont think they would turn us down in the end if we gave them enough money, witch we wont do. But I think if we really would like to get our hands on some of the biggest names in football now, we would be able to.

Well we also have to remember that while Dortmund are having a tougher time of it in the league, they also are still alive in the CL and did pretty well in the group stage. So it might not all be down to money with trying to pry Hummel loose in January. The club might actually want to keep their squad together and see what they can do in the CL and see if they can turn it around in the league.
