As the Hummels performances thread is increasingly filled with transfer news these days, he deserves his own thread in the transfer forum. Hummels has made it clear he fancies playing abroad in the future and there's plenty of gossip around him. However there was last summer too and a move never transpired.

Watzke (the Dortmund chief executive) latest comments make for interesting reading though:
“In this moment, this a total dummy discussion, because there is no offer. If one arrives, we will discuss it internally and make a decision. But this decision will only be taken by BVB.

“The situation at Dortmund is like this: We've lost one major player each year, but we don’t stop playing football. To be clear: Mats knows his contractual situation, he described it in that interview himself. The decision where Mats will play next season will only be taken by BVB.”

Hasn't the player himself however repeatedly ruled this out?

There were some quotes about him saying something along the lines of 'United or nothing' that he called bullshit on. The quotes in that Jackson article about him planning on moving away from the Bundesliga in the future are true though I believe. It just depends when he moves and where he goes.

The quotes about wanting to play abroad someday are true. Dortmund have basically said he'll go for the right fee and Hummels has confirmed he's happy to do so. We need an experienced CB who's a great leader and excellent on the ball. He fits the bill perfectly, although pace is an issue.

It would be an awesome signing. A Hummels and Smalling CB partnership could be .

I saw him rubbish the recent quotes, but he's always seemed very loyal to Dortmund. Maybe we can change his mind, i don't know.

1. Someone has been sleeping the job.
2. Let this case be a lesson of the emptiness of those promises in a world where you can get £100k a week pay rise.

What does this mean?

After Hummels' interview in the last week and now Watzke's interview from today.....if i must bet on either "Yes, he'll go in the summer" or "Nah, Mats will stay in Dortmund for the next season" then i would definitely go for the first option.

Only the "promise to Fergie" was bollox (but this rumour has started the german press).
But it's true that he thinks more than ever about his future and would like to play abroad in the future.

Jackson came across well in an interview I saw him in, but he's not credible yet. I mean here was the guy who said Di Maria's deal hadn't been agreed 2 hours before he arrived in Manchester for a medical.

To be honest I only included his article because it had all the quotes from Watzke and Hummels in one article. I don't give much credibility to any of his actual 'journalism'. The quotes are being widely reported so are presumably accurate and are worth discussing on their own.

He said he wants to leave more or less, club said they want to sell more or less, he's off.

Jackson is a muppet who has been quite emphatically wrong in the past. Should be working for the Daily Star and not the Guardian.

IIRC, he said something similar days before Shaw signed.

Why? Have you actually a theory of why it will be an issue or are you just spouting the clueless fact that's been popping up every time we're linked with him?

Terry, Pique and Vidic were all the best defender in the world at one stage of their career and each one of them are as ''slow'' as Hummels. Terry is the best PL defender at 35, had Vidic not had a bad injury he'd be the best defender in Italy and Pique is in the top 5 in La Liga.

How is it a clueless fact? You have seen him play before, right? You surely noticed his lack of pace.... or are you just star struck by a big name and unwilling to even consider there might be problems with his adaption to the PL.

How good did Terry look in AVB's high defensive line? Not good at all. Van Gaal plays a high defensive line so Hummels pace may be an issue. That's not me sprouting a 'clueless fact', just being realistic.

I'm talking about people saying it will be an issue but never backing it up, at least you've attempted to in your second post. It just irks me people seem to rehash comments made by someone who never made an attempt to explain why. As for playing a high line how many times has a player had enough room to run at our defenders and try beat them for pace this season? I can't think of any of the top of my head.

Liverpool game at home, Sterling did 3 or 4 times. With the pressing Van Gaal prefers then it shouldn't happen that often and as we've gotten better defensively it's happened less and less. But I think we'd need a bit of pace beside him to be secure. Smalling or Jones next to him should be quite good imo.

Watch him go to Madrid, and Chelsea sign Varane. I can horribly see that happening.

Hummels is a no brainer if we can get him btw.

Is Hummels a little on the fat side or does he just have a thick body like his teammate Gundogan?

He has basically said that he wants to leave in the past week. I would expect a United fan to know that.

I'm up to date with the latest surrounding Hummels. I just literally didn't understand what the bolded part meant, what with it not making much sense and all.

Nothing in the quotes mentions us at all. Jamie Jackson spear-fishing in the dark as usual. Awful journalist. He was on FTD a week or so ago and predictably failed to have anything interesting to say. Though he does look less of a twat now than in his Guardian mugshot.

The more appropriate question is how good did Hummels look in Dortmund's very aggressive high line when they were winning back-to-back titles? The answer of course is his lack of pace was exposed far less than people imagine it to be. Playing a high line effectively is all about positioning and reading of the game, pace is very small part of it. If it was then Hummels and Pique would've been embarrassed every single week because there's no question they are slow - it's just not that important.

I think we're signing him, he's perfect for Van Gaal's Philosophy and we were always going to be in for a top class CB. It's great to genuinely feel we can sign whoever we want these days, instead of aimless muppetry.

Whats weird is how all rival forums think he's shit, i don't get what i'm not seeing.

It's not really surprising a lot of people think that Boateng and Pepe aren't good.

I think this is nailed on if he's available. Sounds like this has been bubbling away since last summer.

It does concern me a bit though. A lack of pace is a concern, especially in the PL. That being said, he's got a good pedigree and could be the leader we need at the back.

Vidic wasnt blessed with pace but it shows how a clever footballer can get away with it.

I think hes had a bit of a meh season so far, albeit i dont watch to many of their games, but after a long WC its not exactly surprising. Him with Smalling/Jones would be immense.

None of that is even remotely true.

Is he even better than pique on the ball? Looking at that clip above maybe I've not appreciated his contribution to starting attacks for dortmund over the years.

Vidic had raw physicality and was a great reader of the game. He was intimidating as a player to play against. I'm not sure Hummels has that.

I'm not saying he won't succeed, but its big money for a defender so he has to do well.

And i think Hummels intelligence and positioning is what will set him apart. Personally i can see him doing well under a manager like LvG

Dortmund firm over Hummels

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke insists Mats Hummels' future will be decided by the German club with the defender still under contract.

Reports in the media suggest Manchester United will table a €35million (£25.7m) bid for the 2014 World Cup-winning centre-back but, with two more years to run on his current contract, Dortmund are eager to keep their 26-year-old captain having lost Robert Lewandowski and Mario Gotze to Bayern Munich in the last two seasons.

"We have had the situation in Dortmund recently that we have lost one of our top performers every year," Watzke told German daily newspaper Bild.

"And we still haven't stopped playing football. But to make it clear, Mats Hummels knows the contract situation.

"The decision as to where Mats plays next season is of course only down to Borussia Dortmund."

Dortmund are also waiting on Germany midfielder Ilkay Gundogan to extend his current contract, which expires in June 2016, but Watze says "no decision has yet been taken."

He added: "No-one needs to worry: we will have a strong team next year.

"If we don't qualify for Europe next season, we will have to trim down, because our squad will be too big for a year without international competition.

"But the team budget will still be higher than in the years when we were German champions."

One player reportedly set to leave Dortmund at the end of the season is Italy striker Ciro Immobile, who has failed to make an impact since his €18.5m move from Torino last year.
