Football these days waits for nobody

How much did the spend on Mangala a year ago? Now he is not only getting better but actually looked very impressive and he is going to be discarded

I'd just sooner see Mangala stay, personally I'm happy with our CB choices currently at the club. I can see the benefit of having another excellent CB to choose from given Kompanys injury habits, but if Mangala leaves then we are in exactly the same position. I'm hoping that the deal is just a fix for the lack of payment Valencia were able to give for Negredo after having to contractually sign him, and we'll walk away with a good deal, but the rumours aren't great.
Lack of payment? Are you sure about this? It's more likely that it's a normal debt that clubs have against each other with payment installments.

Did we really want another Argentine at the club after the trouble we have had with them so far? Veron, Tevez and Di-Maria and to a lesser extent Rojo. He missed his flight due to passport issues, and the fuss he made at Sporting CP to get the transfer in the first place shows his desire to leave a club. Not sure we need another CB after all we have good players at the club, we have solved the RB position which was an issue and surely putting more pressure on the RCB. The midfield is now sorted and offers more support to the defence so not getting Otamendi isn't such a bad thing, especially if City have to loan Mangala to Valencia after the good start he has made.

Maybe it's just me, but I think that Smalling, Jones/Blind/Rojo is good enough... We should put those money on a few attackers with pace and trickery
two of those are likely to be injured often.

I just don't know who to believe: We were not interested, Ramos or nothing. For a team in need of a quality CB, we've been acting like a bunch of amateur-hour nitwits.

Who can you call us amateur hour nit wits? We have played two games and won two with clean sheets. Who was available that would enhance our team? Otamendi was a right footed CB and not likely to take the place of Smalling due to the form he was in. Otamendi has had one good season with Valencia and wouldn't be the quality we would need in defence, we needed someone like Ramos who is World class and one of the best defenders in the World. Otamendi being Argentine is also another downside, look at the fuss he has made trying to leave Valencia, if it didn't work out with us then he would do the same next season and we would make a huge loss on him. Also the fee of £35m is pretty high for him. We could have had Hummels for £30m but I think we stalled too long on the transfer and he was convinced to stay by the incoming manager.

Would you prefer we panicked and bought any CB who wouldn't fit the team philosophy? We have Smalling, Jones, Blind, Rojo, Evans, McNair and Blackett and to a lesser extent Carrick. I think it will be enough this season due to the midfield and RB re-enforcements. I don't believe we were ever interested in him, if we were then it would be done before pre-season. We need Pedro and a striker to be able to compete in all comps this season.

Weird thing about this is, why did City wait so long? This could have been wrapped up a very long time ago, likewise for us if we were indeed interested.

Could imagine Valencia holding it up, wanting Mangala/a replacement or more money etc....

I guess, but this sort of just happened out of the blue. A new CB is definitely something has been needed for a while for City, so they could have ironed out all the crinkles a month or two back.

You start the league so well and your expensive CB starts to actually play like his price and you go and try get another one? I hope this backfires on them.

The club probably was still considering how much faith they had in Mangala and Kompany to recover from their below-par seasons, as well as what to do with Denayer. I reckon the Stuttgart friendly convinced them Otamendi was required, and negotiations became serious thereafter.

Why Rojo? He isnt ahead of either Blind or Jones
Any combination then Rojo / Jones / Smalling or Blind while I see City going from strength to strength, we mess about in the transfer market as per usual. For me we are a laughing stock used by players to get what they want.

Bloody hell. Chill out lol. There only ever hot when we don't get them. It wasn't too long ago people were angry we didn't sign Cuadrado. Give it a rest he's an okay defender.

Piecing together things from the summer, it sounds like he wanted/expected to come to United, but when it became clear that we weren't going to bid for him (or not enough) then his people had to find someone else, as Otamendi has pretty much burned his bridges with Valencia. Otamendi is 27, and coming off far and away his best season ever and a good Copa America. It's really his only chance to command a good price, so it makes sense that his agent (Mendes, or someone at Mendes' agency, correct?) would push for a move.

United were known (or at least though) to have a CB as their #1 transfer priority. So tons and tons of stories are put out there linking United to him. So much so that pretty reliable word from inside United a few weeks ago said that we are not interested and would not be bidding on him, while also expressing annoyance at United's name being used to drum up interest in him.

Once Ramos met with Perez and it seemed likely that Ramos was staying, the Otamendi talk picked up steam again. But a couple of weeks passed with nothing, then in the last week or so, a lot of City talk started to emerge.

The timing of everything, including the Ramos situation, really makes it appear that they were waiting for that to play out to see if United would bid after Ramos fell through (or, if Ramos did move to United, if Madrid would bid).

Ah laughing stock, how I've missed those kind of posts. It must be hard for you to be an United supporter given we're such a laughable club.

He'll probably do well with Citeh - but honestly I don't care - I'm sick of Mendes and his clients. Let someone else deal with him.
