Di Maria should have been given a 2nd season but thats the manager for you, the jury is still out on Depay, personally I dont think he will hit Ronaldo heights and as for Nani, I dont understand why the club gave him a long term deal last year only to sell him this year. It's very strange. I would like to see someone like Isco bought in if possible, who will bring some guile and creativity to our attack.
Di maria really didn't give us much of a choice in the matter, I don't understand what you would expect Van Gaal to do with a player that want to leave that badly. Memphis doesn't need to become as good as Ronaldo to be a success here, neither of Hazard or Alexis are close to Ronaldo but that doesn't mean they're not great players. Nani got his new contract under Moyes, not under Van Gaal, and it was a baffling decision indeed to grant him a contract like that at a time where he wasn't a prolific player for us. Isco could improve us but I Think that we need to improve other areas first.

 Are you serious? The rodent was on the phone to PSG half way through the season negotiating a move out. He couldn't hack it here and always knew they were ready to swoop in to save the Damsel in distress if needed.

How can you blame the manager for Di Maria being a two faced, spineless pussy? I guess you can say benching him played a big role in him leaving but it was justified and anyone with respectable character would have worked twice as hard to get their place back in the team. In my eyes, the red card against Arsenal showed a total lack of respect for us as a club. No matter how angry or stupid you are; you would know a red card is coming from such an action. It was a childish response to a correct decision by the ref and it was almost like he already knew he was gone. He didn't work hard or show the right attitude in order to get back in the team and thus our lack of fight in getting him to stay. Just shows you how far some people will go to fetch a stick to bash LVG with.

As for the second part in bold, it's called business. Nani respected us enough to sign a long term contact to stop him leaving for peanuts/on a free. He was also given a chance to prove himself in training/pre season before loaning him out to Sporting as well.

I do agree with you on Isco though, as far fetched as the idea is.

They're probably not much fun for the neutral but there's plenty of positives that I'm enjoying seeing. I don't spend the whole of a football match going "WHY ARE WE NOT SHOOTING OR CONTINUALLY ATTACKING THEIR BOX?" like some people seem to.

Definitely. We've conceded 6 shots on target over the course of 4 games. We've won 3 and drawn 1 conceding just one flukey own goal. You don't get a record like that without dominating the matches.

Absolutely. Only City look better at this point (you'd have to actually watch football rather than look at team sheets to recognise this)

Arsenal lost 2-0 to West Ham and limped past Crystal Palace.

Chelsea have conceded 7 goals in 3 games and look an absolute shambles at the back, a 2-2 home draw with Swansea?

... yet everyone assumes that Arsenal and Chelsea are just a bit sluggish in the early season (an excuse United aren't allowed) and are going to kick into gear and blow us away.

What's to say that our attackers aren't going to find form soon and put games to bed? We have Rooney, Depay, Mata, Januzaj, Fellaini, Herrera, Hernandez and Young with Wilson and Periera on the fringes, it's a talented group and the play behind them has been excellent, I think it's only a matter of time before it clicks up front and teams struggle to contain them.

The moaning this season reminds me of what Ferguson said of Van Nistelrooy's impatience. He didn't want to hang around and wait for Rooney and Ronaldo to mature which he wouldn't have had to wait long for. How about the same patience is shown to Januzaj and Depay. Maybe Van Gaal recognises the potential in them and feels that they need game after game to kick on rather than sitting on the bench behind someone like Pedro.#

There was a time when United fans prided themselves on the way we cultured our young players while now we want proven starts to take their place and at the same time moan that the club has lost it's identity.

If you're having trouble taking pleasure from United's game, how about trying to take a bit of pleasure from watching two great young players at the start of their journey? Three if you include Shaw which I certainly do.

I have absolutely no idea. Not a clue and neither does anyone else at this point. Even if he does well at Chelsea it's not to say he would have been right for us nor that his arrival wouldn't have got in our young players way.

You're describing all of 5 players that have existed over the last 20 years and none of them signed for anyone as a "World Cup Winning Captain in their prime" so I'm not exactly sure what the criteria is of a club that does that. The closest would be Real Madrid paying €7m for Cannavaro who was 33 at the time and left a just relegated Juventus.

Ander Herrera - Fans Favourite, excellent player.
Luke Shaw - starting to prove his talent and is still barely 20 years old.
Marcos Rojo - Had a few injury concerns and doesn't look nearly as good at LB than CB but he was solid enough last season.
Angel Di Maria - The less said about the better, we recouped £45m of it though.
Daley Blind - great signing and for an absolute steal. Loving having his ball playing quality at CB.
Memphis Depay - Time will tell how good he can become but I think he'll prove a bargain at under £25m.
Falcao - A loan move, relatively risk free on the financial front and it didn't work out. There weren't too many rivals who could honestly say his signing didn't worry them.
Matteo Darmian - Excellent buy, great price.
Bastian Schweinsteiger - Bastian fecking Schweinsteiger. He already looks like the leader we needed out on the field.
Morgan Schneiderlin - A signing everyone wanted and we got for a sensible fee.
Sergio Romero - Who knows? 1 goal conceded from a stupid deflection off Carrick and 3 clean sheets. Some nervous moments but its a hugely pressured job and any keeper would take time to adjust.

We came fourth, winning 5 and drawing 3 against the other Top 6 sides.

We've fixed our weakest areas from last season:
Right back, Darmian over Valencia should be a big improvement.
Midfield: When Carrick was out we struggled badly with control in the middle and even played Rooney and Herrera as DM's. We now have Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger to ease the burden. A huge improvement and a major issue plugged.
Left wing: We had the industrious Young, we now have the exciting Depay.
Having Blind move to CB from midfield has also strengthened that position. He's looked excellent so far and alongside Smalling we have a very good back four with very good protection.

As he says and gets mocked for "it's a process". He's built fantastic foundations and in my opinion it's a matter of time before the attacking talent we have start to click and roll teams over. One thing I'm certain of is that we won't be losing many games this season and that will do wonders for the chemistry and confidence of this squad.

I think we're in a great state. Rome wasn't built in a day, it's been a year since he has been here and he's hit the targets so far. I expect us to just keep on improving. Anyone that can't see the improvement since he came in is either kidding themselves or has a very short memory.

Excellent post, I'm with you all the way. The funny thing too is that Brugge and at times vs Newcastle, we actually started to click. I think we are a forward away from being serious contenders.

Probably because quite a lot of frustrated people, after reading the majority of threads on here; came to voice something along the same lines. But then saw your post and you pretty much covered it all. It really is nice to see some positivity, and the lack of negative response is probably because you put it so well and logically that they don't know what to say and will resume the LVG bashing on other threads.

The true north.
This forum has become significantly more RAWKish since Ferguson retired. Not in terms of overzealous modding, but in sheer hysteria and unfathomably short sighted statements. The state of this place all summer has been fecking horrific.

Agree completely. Its annoying to miss out on Pedro for example, as it would give us more short term success, but its giving chances to some of the best youngsters in the world to develop, like we did for Rooney and ronaldo a decade ago. Saying that, I do find our tactics going forwards frustrating, as I think its not encouraging free flowing play really. And we are very tedious to watch (which was a common complaint by the end of his tenure at Bayern). Doesn't mean we are bad at all though, we're a very strong and effective team and I think we'll go far, because of our defence, but I do expect a lot of rather boring games.

We're gonna make Top 4 regardless.I don't see any team other than City,Chelsea or Arsenal that looks like they have enough in them to stay a decent chance of finishing above us.
I think Liverpool will have equal chance of 4th as us, their forward line looks overall stronger.

Januzaj is awful in the hole. His only chance of making it is working as a winger, which he has the attributes to do.

He is not playing "in the hole". Right now he is being asked to play as a second striker and is toe to toe with Rooney most of the game. He'll do better if he is asked to play as a 10 and link the midfield with the attack. Also, we need to attack in numbers, if the whole responsibilty of the attack remains on only the 4 front players, then none them will shine.

Doesn't have that many goals in it. Benteke is decent, Sturridge can score goals by is injured half the time, and coutinho can score screamers from distance now and then. And firmino can get a decent amount. Don't think its too different from ours really. Rooney and Benteke you would think would end with a similar amount at around 15ish. Hernandez can get a decent amount as back up, memphis will score plenty imo, mata can get 10-15 like firmino probably, while coutinhos most has been like 6? Outside of them I think we're just stronger everywhere though. Not like they have looked good at all in the first few games anyway, lucky to beat Bournemouth at home due to 2 big incorrect refereeing calls.

Agree he should be a sub player who comes on when we have the game won at this stage mostly, he is a mile away from the likes of Willian or Sterling and this speaks volumes of where we are just now. Massive potential all the same but there needs to be a balance between nurturing potential and winning trophies.

Van Gaal is as past it and functioning on former glories, as Wayne Rooney is to this Utd team.

Both USED to be genuinely great and now both are long past it. Van Gaal wont win anything in his 3 years here.

By publicly backing Rooney, LVG has wisely covered both bases: if Wayne fails, sidelining or selling him won't create the expected furore; if Wayne succeeds, all is good. In short, I doubt LVG is so dim as to bank his United career on a single player's performances; his show of faith in Rooney (which is only right and fair, considering WR's history at United) means that Wayne stands or falls in a very public manner.

@Pexbo take a bow. :D

@Cassidy I don't think we even need a new forward, if we play like we did against Newcastle regularly, we'll win most games two or three nil even with our current strikers. With a new striker we'd be incredible.

How is that unpopular, Steve? I fully agree and I don't see why anyone wouldn't.

Will sidelining or selling him create a furore, mate? Don't think from the fans side; most know that Wayne is done as a striker/talisman.

To me, it seems more like proving a point to the media: Look, you wanted him as a striker and I played him there, now he is not good there and I was always right.

Who suffers? United and it's fans.

Also, there is little chance anyone is buying Rooney on the wages he is on.

To me, it seems more like proving a point to the media: Look, you wanted him as a striker and I played him there, now he is not good there and I was always right.
That seems a completely pointless tactic, if that's what LVG is really doing (although it indirectly suggests my theory isn't that far wide of the mark, curiously). Organisations in general should learn to ignore press opinions as much as possible, IMO.

Agree he should be a sub player who comes on when we have the game won at this stage mostly, he is a mile away from the likes of Willian or Sterling and this speaks volumes of where we are just now. Massive potential all the same but there needs to be a balance between nurturing potential and winning trophies.
I don't agree that he's a mile away from them at all. You do realise that Willian's 27 years old and Sterling is only ahead of him because been backed by his managers to start pretty much every game, we need to put that same faith in Adnan.

I think Benteke and Sturridge will comfortably outscore Rooney and Hernandez across the season and the trio of Firmino/o/Lallana will equal whatever Memphis/Januzaj/Mata produce. The big difference is that they have a #9 that doesn't kill attacks like ours does, Benteke is no world beater and I didn't want United to sign him, but he can at least hold the ball up to bring the other forwards into play.

Liverpool are nowhere near us, Benteke will do a job but they can't play Benteke and Sturridge without sacrificing someone, Milner and Henderson will get murdered against the good teams. Firmino is unproven in the premier league and is a 23 year old (nearly 24) who plays like a 19 year old who has just broken onto the scene, 90% of people rating him so highly have definitely not seen him play, he's nothing special at all, far from it even. We have nothing to fear from them at all.

LVG's role at United is not to win titles. It's to create a foundation.
I like Moyes more
Yes.

Whether we win a title with him or not, we will be a much better club for having him here.

You can see it taking shape already if you look at our progress over the past year in terms of playing style and tactics.

Edit: ahhhh you got me.

Spot on @Pexbo with that post. We are one player away, in terms of personnel anyway. If he comes in, and works - we can challenge for the title and are as good as any in the league.

@Pexbo 's post should be OP in a "popular opinions" thread.
It's genuinely encouraging the response it's gotten.

It feels like I'm arguing with everyone on here about the current situation and how it's actually a lot brighter than people make out but in reality it's probably just a handful of particularly negative drama queens who are exaggerating their worries and in some scenarios creating issues to fit their narrative about Woodward, Van Gaal and certain players.

I really do feel like, come May, I'm going to be an insufferably smug twat quoting the drama queens who said Blind will get destroyed by any centre half who is above average in build, ability or pace or that our youngsters aren't good enough to step up and be depended on amongst other gripes.

Christ on a bike, the short memories on here. Rooney has not been and never will be a target man but since when did we ever play with one of those? If we need a big lump up top to pump long balls at we've got Fellaini. I really hope that's not the way we try and win games of football, though.

I don't have a short memory, we played this way last season, LvG always likes his strikers to operate mostly with their back to goal and hold the ball up as well as link play. Back in 09/10 Rooney managed this pretty well in our big games when Fergie dropped Berbatov to play an extra CM. The fact is we are playing this way now and Rooney is the main #9. It's also got nothing to do with lumping balls up, the ball is often played along the deck but you need a good first touch and lay off or the ability to turn your defender and drive the attack, neither of which Rooney looks capable of right now. Fellaini is fine to throw on at the end to hit balls into but he is not a proper #9 with the full skill set to play how we are trying to play so we are reliant on Rooney to do this job.

Every attacking footballer needs a good first touch and ability to turn his defender. When he's playing badly (as he did against Villa) Rooney can't do either. When he's not playing badly (as he has done in our other games) then his touch and technique is fine. We're just a bit disjointed in general up front. Which happens when you're integrating new players. Rooney's the obvious scapegoat so the criticism of his ability as a footballer on here has reached near delusional levels as a result.

I'm not even a Rooney "hater" or whatever, if you look at my posts before pre-season I was sure he'd be fine as the main #9 even though his first touch has always been erratic. However right now he looks lacking in energy and easily knocked off the ball which hampers attacks as it's vital to protect and move as the focal point of the attack, I just don't think physically he's cut out for the role at this point, it's not delusional or hate or anything else, it is simply how he looks, the same way RvP looked last season, blunted. I also don't get scapegoating as a fair claim, he is supposed to be the talisman, the Captain and our main attacking threat, the rest of the front 4 is made up of Mata and a 2 young players who are still developing, he has to take on the responsibility and will be judged with how he manages with that accordingly.
