Gaming Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain | Use Spoiler Tags for now

Agree/ I have read a number of people complaining that the maps themselves aren't that varied. I don't mind this, as the options you have open to you as to how you achieve things are incredibly varied - and that is one of the most enticing elements in the game.

Yep. This is their first (and only) approach at making it fully open world and I think they have done fine. I am still in Afghanistan and liking it very much. It could do with a little more room and maybe a few more villages but it doesn't absolutely need it to succeed. It's a completely different open world game than something like Witcher or GTA where it was absolutely essential to have a huge world as you'd interact with it a lot and the success of the game would depend on that interaction to a large degree. In MGS you get to spend 95% of your time in hiding anyway and the only interaction you have with vast majority of NPCs is killing them.

Finished mission 12 last night -
the one where you extract Huey Emmerich. Really good sneaking through the base and back again - and then evading the walker at the end!

Next mission will be in Africa - which also means I should soon be able to do the Gunsmith side-ops. Will do them then will be able to customize my weapons
Just finished that one, but I just
commandeered a mini-walker at the start and blasted my way through the place.

I love the variety on approaching missions. Not to mention the classic tunnels and cardboard boxes as homages to previous games.

Agree with all above, done about 27 hours and only just landed in Africa! Trying to upgrade as much as i can so i have all the equipment ready to use for the missions.

Just started Africa last night with over 60 hours on the clock, just been trying to get as many of the mission objectives done as I can, I think tonight I'll try to get the Legendary gunsmith and an Afrikaans interpreter then try and get some more mission objectives fully complete. My mother base is packed full but I have no where near the right amount of Fuel resources to upgrade them so Ill have to upgrade my combat unit first so they can do more missions and keep a look out for fuel containers while im out in the field.

The mission where you have to extract Huey Emmerich from the Russian base was brilliant, The sounds Metal Gear Sahelanthropus makes are pretty terrifying.

How do you lot manage to clock 50-60 hours in this already? It's been out for six days! I am barely past 5-hour mark and I feel like I've been playing this a lot over the weekend.

I got it delivered on the Friday before it came out

Fully agree!

On that mission...
I sneaked through the base - and even managed to Fulton out all of the containers near where he was being held - was sure they would get spotted as I did - but got away with it! In saying that, when I was sneaking out with him, then I heard one of the guards say over the radio that all their resources had been stolen! No mention of Huey being taken - so I had to deal with the guards being on high alert as I escaped. Am thinking had I not stolen the containers, then they would not have known. Oops! Thankfully there was a timely sandstorm as I was getting close to the exit - so when that hit I just legged it!

Well said!

I never played The Witcher as it just doesn't appeal to me - the setting of MGS is much more my thing than the more fantasy genre.

I have played the hell out of GTA...although not been to Los Santos since MGS came out...

Witcher isn't hard fantasy, you need to play it. I'm not much into fantasy at all but Witcher is something else, completely.

GTA I must have spent 200 hours on combined on both platforms. I intend to finish main story again on PS4 because I haven't yet but not sure where to find time for this.

Anyone having issues with the companion app?

Mines spitting out some error about page not found when I try to sign in

as much as I love this game and visually it is brilliant there is one thing that is really doing my head in and that is the enemy spawning

So last night I done the mission Red Brass which has a lot of enemies along with the 3 targets I decided to be careful so I Fulton everyone around and then went and collected all the supplies in the base. then took a jeep and drove out of the mission zone it loaded and completed the mission I then turned to drive back through the base and there was all the enemies spawned again!!! it was extremely frustrating because I then had to leave the jeep to avoid contact and go around the base.

Just wanna say I S ranked that mission.

I've just seen the biggest spoiler yet to the game and all I will say is I'm even more lost and confused now!

There has been so little story so far I feel I once it kicks in the game will just go to another level completely.

Yeah, I haven't had much story. I like the casettes though, should be good introduction for someone who finished Snake Eater years ago and barely remembers the story. Haven't listened to them all that much but I hope they will provide me with enough feedback to understand the notion of it.

How can I keep more than two main weapons? I have developed grenade launcher and then asked for a drop of a sniper rifle and machine gun because I needed them and it seems that I am no longer able to use grenade launcher unless I develop it again and pay.

When will I be able to develop intel team?

@Sarni you can't carry more than two. One you have developed them they are yours to keep but You have to choose what loadout you want.

But they require me to pay again for the grenade launcher when I ask to have it delivered. Or maybe I am seeing it wrong.

You definitely don't have to pay the development cost again. You can get a supply drop of whatever developed weapons/tools you have which I think has a small delivery fee attached but nowhere near the development cost. If it seems really high then maybe you are looking at an upgraded version in the menu.

I'm playing MGS2 at the minute. It's fecking awkward on the vita but I'm struggling through. Still really enjoying it though!

I don't think 2 gets as much credit as it deserves. It's a wonderful game with a fantastic story and of course some great boss battles. They're all great games, mind.

Still not had a chance to properly sit down and play this. I'm envious of you all.

I've never played it before and I've sure missed out! Loving the story so far and despite my crappy-ness with the controls, the gameplay is still really fun. I'll be onto MGS3 after this and Peacewalker, then it'll be Ground Zeroes since I don't have a PS3 to play 4 :(

You can buy a PS3 dirt cheap these days!

The story gets quite confusing half way through, but stick with it!

I'm planning on doing 5 then replaying through them all again. 3 is incredible.

Very true, I'd been looking the other day actually. Plus it's like £30 for the Legacy Collection which gets you all the games including 4, it is certainly tempting me!

I'm about 5 hours into 2 so far, did all of that today as well

This game has so much quality to it.

I am about to extract some weapon from a base in mission 6 but I realized I will have to approach from the base before where there are loads of soldiers protecting the passage so I go back. I leave mission zone because I want to approach from the other side, then I realize I have about three side ops near me so I tackle them to improve my units. They turn out plenty of fun. Now I need to go back to the main mission but I will probably need to buy some stuff before I am off there  really don't want to pass through that huge base ahead but they could have some intel about weapon's location.

They really have made it properly awesome in terms of freedom they give you. This might not be the most immense open world yet but in terms of freedom you actually get it's absolutely great. Still behind Witcher this year for me because Witcher had too much quality story wise (some of the side quests were like a game itself) but it's running very close and it's still very early.

Where do you actually see time played in it btw?

Finally finished it. Great game, and probably my fav of the year so far. I think I'm going to finish off the side ops as well.

I'm still blown away by this game. It's dangerously easy to sink hours and hours into it. I find myself coming off after playing for hours and then hopping right back on it an hour later. Between this and Witcher 3 it's been a spectacular year for gaming. It's probably only going to get better too. I'm actually a bit concerned for my life, if more and more unmissable, huge games keep coming out at this rate then I'll never get anything done.

Getting the hang of things now, I managed to tranq a bear, ran around rocks like a pansy, but I won the war

Just messing around doing side ops for now. I'll keep at them to upgrade as much as I can. Fantastic game so far. Only done the first 3 main missions and 3 or 4 side ops.

Not really sure if I need to spoiler this, but I'm erring on the side of caution.

Anytime you are landing for a mission, check around for a puppy. Otherwise you might miss one of your potential recruits like I did. I don't know what the cutoff point is but I didn't know until mission 7-8 and now I cannot find him even while replaying mission 5 which I think is where he should show up.
