Damn, no Carrick or Smalling is a blow.

    Gone with:

XI: de Gea; Varela, Blind, Fosu-Mensah, Rojo; Sncheiderlin, Herrera; Lingard, Mata, Memphis; Martial
    Subs: Darmian, Poole, Rashford
    Unused: Romero, Riley, Rothwell, Weir

Hope we can get the win, still fancy us to get 2 goals and Watford 0 or 1.
If Rojo and Darmian are anywhere near properly fit, I'd start both of them.

Would also be reluctant to bench Rashford now. He's red hot, start him again. If it tails off, then bring him off.
That would then mean it's tricky between Martial and Lingard. Harsh to drop Lingard, but he'd understand as there are loads of games building up.

Schneiderlin for me has to start. He's being playing very well the last few games especially against Arsenal.

Doesn't really matter how well he's played, there's no one else fit so he's pretty much nailed on mate..

Yeah true that. But there may be a little shuffle if Smalling is fit. Would they then have Carrick starting in midfield with either Herrera or Schneiderlin? Tough one to call.

Yeah, I would want to keep Rashford in to be honest and hope he does. However, with the lack of experience at the back (possibly) and Rashford looking knackered after Arsenal, LvG might opt for the slightly more experienced players where possible.

Do you think Darmian would play RCB or LB? Tough call.

Neither Smalling or Carrick are fit unfortunately

First game I'm going to in a while, last one was that last minute winner against sheff united. I didn't even celebrate it much I was so bored. Feeling a lot more optimistic about tonight, hoping for the depay show.

Why would you not like to see Mata, Varela or Rashford start?
Rashford - has to be protected plus coming off the bench isn't going to do him no harm, might make him more eager

Mata - has done well #10 but I'd like Pereira to be given a chance to show what he's capable off

Verela - been playing very well but against a team like like Watford IMO his height will be targeted at the back post thus the need for a taller player. I think long term we will see Mensah take over from him as back up as he is being developed there. Having Shaw and Mensah as long term FB is not a bad thing, both are physical and strong enough to handle the PL.

I think we need some experience in the front 4 so mata has to start.

I know Pereira is highly thought of but i've seen little of him playing well. Certainly not enough to displace mata in good form. Feels like it would be a bizarre change to me. Completely illogical.

    DDG
    Fosu mensah
    Rojo
    Valera
    Blind
    Schneiderlin
    Herrera
    Lingard
    Mata
    Memphis
    Rashford

Martial on if Rashford starts to tire.

Weird that we don't even consider playing two strikers anymore. Can you imagine if 15 years ago somebody told you that in the not too distant playing two up top won't be considered an option.

Well the team we're playing against tonight play two up top, despite Deeny doing a lot of defensive work. Leicester have also done very well with a 442 this season too, so the formations still there. Just need the right players, and I think we have, to be honest.

Would be nice, as people have suggested, to see Rashford and Martial up top. The both seem pretty sound when it comes to their all round play, in terms of dropping off, linking play, running in behind, dribbling with the ball, etc. They could easily dovetail with each other, i.e. one dropping off, one running in behind. Think they would prove to be a nightmare for a lot of teams. Our next Cole and Yorke. :p

Rashford won't start as he's in my fantasy footy team as captain this week.

They do indeed but I was referring to ourselves(and most big clubs). I don't think anybody feels we'll start with two.

Surely we have enough faith in Schneiderlin and Herrera to control the game and therefore allow us to field both strikers.

But you have to think about who you have playing wide, do you think that playing Memphis as a left midfielder instead of left winger is the best way of using him and will that change make the team better?

I don't think it would make a difference to Memphis' position. The winger position was born in a 442 so not sure what you mean sorry.

Why would Darmian, who has never played at CB, play at CB over Rojo?
He has played at CB a couple of times for us, though I think it has only happened during games due to injuries and/or a formation change.

I reckon van Gaal would prefer to use him there than two left footers, but Fosu-Mensah is probably the best choice.

When? I don't recall him ever playing there other than in a 3 against Southampton. We've played with two right footers like 8 or 9 times this season. This shit about the same foot is total overboard, he doesn't care that much that he going to play a fullback at CB and a CB at fullback.

    A wide player doesn't have the same role in a 433, 4231 or 442.

So your opinion is that a left midfielder is a left midfielder. That would mean that there is no such thing as a 4231 or a 433..

I can't remember which games, though it has been fleeting when it has happened so he probably won't start with him there tonight.

I don't think two left footers is a big deal myself, but the way van Gaal operates can be strange to say the least. I think the two right footers thing from last year is probably what convinced him to convert Blind into a CB.

No I'm saying that playing two up top won't prevent Memphis from being a winger. Maybe there's crossed wires here because that seems almost too obvious to point out.
