Sterling dropped 8% against the euro so would be about £33m if €40m.
It's not been great news today (my point of view) but people need to stop panicking and scaremongering. It might get a bit worse and take a year to recover the pound value.

Exactly. Everyone seems to be losing their shit over Brexit right now when in truth, no-one actually knows what impact it will have on signing new players from abroad.
The strength of the pound fluctuates every day anyway doesn't it? It will recover. Let's not forget the state of the Euro at one time either.
I'm sure United were sensible enough to understand the political situation tied in with the football situation. They were holding these transfers out in hope that if we remain then the pound would be worth more which obviously means that transfers would cost less.

I think as someone else mentioned, United will have money in different currencies so it should effect anything as the can pay in Euro's to save a bit dosh and juggle the money later. Only slowing effect that i would forsee would be if they were taking stock of the situation and planning strategy accordingly.
Our dollar inflows were primarily from Nike and they were matched against the dollar interest payments. I'm sure the Adidas contracts are denominated in euros or pounds. The dollar interest payments are presumably hedged, so I can't think why we'd have a stack of dollars lying around. There are no free lunches here. Even if we have commercial contracts denominated in, say, dollars, using the dollars to buy euros reduces the (pound) cash flow to United by just the same amount that using devalued pounds to buy the euros would cost.

Whatever the currency, would welcome this transfer with open arms. Last season's horrorshow with about two chances per game left me in a sad state. It's great to feel hope and actually look forward to a United game again. Mourinho, Bailly and Mkhitaryan is an amazing start imo. (assuming this is happening)

€40m for a player of his calibre is good business, whether or not if he had one year left on his contract. This is a guy that was one of the best players in the league last season.

At wages of more than £100k per week it makes financial sense to complete the deal as late as possible as it costs a shit load more to have him on the books through the summer.

I'm sure the attorneys that draft up the contracts take into consideration that a player doesn't collect a paycheck until training begins. If he signed this week, and players didn't have to report for two more weeks, we're not going to pay him £200k to go on holiday. The contact would probably state his pay begins when he reports for training. The flip side to signing a player at the end of the windows is that the player is not acclimated to his new team and possible already played with his old team. 2-3 weeks could go by before he gets a start. Best to sign him as soon as possible in my opinion.
Not when you consider in the next week, those that were not on international duty are supposed to be coming back and starting pre-season training. Plus, probably more of a risk to delay over saving a small amount of money in the grand scheme of things.
