FFS, Ajmal was already picked ??
I contemplated for like an hour or so on whether I should gamble on him for my last pick.

Strong middle order.I would promote Lara at one down and Aravinda after him.

Who would you put as opening pair?

@Mani . your thoughts on batting order would be helpful too.
I'd agree with Mani. You need to put people in position they bat the best. You're one opener short; so sacrifice the poorest in your batting order to open with Sidhu

Dunno what Lara's best position was (3 or 4) but put him in that position; then second best out of Jimmy and Aravinda at the other middle order spot and the worst of the three at number 2

I'm not sure wether Inzy is right fit there, but S.Wugh/Lara need to be played at their best position.Kapil and Knott can be interchanged.

Inzi should play ahead of Waugh should he not ? Waugh has experience coming in at 6 or 7. I don't think Inzi has batted beyond 4 or 5.

I agree there,I'm not sure on weather he got the good opener there,Amarnath mostly played at 3, Lara can play at 3 or 4, Arvinda mostly played at 4, S.Waugh at 5 and again Inzy mostly played at 4.M.Amarnath is make shift opener here and that could back fire against strong bowling line up.

Inzi has no experience playing beyond 4 or 5 whereas Waugh has great averages through 5,6 (both average 50+ in either position). Inzi definitely higher up the batting order than Waugh as it is the optimal way of ensuring both average 50+.

Amarnath thrives against fast bowling and difficult conditions which is why I was thinking of using him as an opener. His best position is 3 but he is used to openers getting out and coming in early v hostile bowling..

De Silva has an average of 58 batting at three and 40+ from 3-5. He averages 48+ at 5. Amarnath averages 45+ from 3-5. Most of De Silva's centuries come with him batting at 4. 8 of Amarnaths centuries come at batting at 3.

Lara averages 60+ at three, 55+ as an opener and 50+ at 4 (where he played majority of his career). Lara's most famous innings of 400 and 375 were both at 3 but his best innings of 277 is at 4. 24 of his centuries come at batting at 4.

Sidhu
Amarnath*
Lara
Inzamam
De Silva*
Waugh
Knott
Dev

One of these two will get to play in a strong batting position.

In the above lineup.. Sidhu averages 42, Lara 60+, Inzi 52, De Silva 48, Waugh 50+. Amarnath suffers. In terms of century count, Lara has featured there less and it isn't his 'career' position.. majority of his career was spent at 4. Majority of Waugh's career and his centuries are at 5. De Silva and Amarnath both average 47+ at position 5 and position 3.. both can play number 4 too.

@Raees - for one, Aravinda's avg of 58 at number 3 doesn't count. He's played there for only 7 innings;

Lara's record is long and good enough for 3 or 4.

I'd keep Lara 4; Inzi 5; Waugh 6; Knott 7 and decide between Jimmy and Aravinda for opening/ 3

Alternatively, play Ajmal for Aravinda and keep Jimmy to open, then Lara, Inzi, Waugh, Knott, Dev.

That's a decent batting order and a good bowling

When you consider that Amarnath's record at 3 on the other hand is brilliant and enduring.. then my original line up but with De Silva sacrificed as opener is probably best.

On the turning pitch yes, Ajmal to come in for Amarnath but not for the seamer match up.

How about for my middle order?

I have Gower who's played at 3, 4 and 5. Abbas has played a lot at 3 and 5. Ganguly can play at 5 and 6. Misbah has played mostly at 5.

I figure I can stick Abbas at 4 since if he's played loads at 3 and 5 I can't see why he'd have a problem there?

No, normally, the Keeper comes in at 7. Since yours is an opener, changes the dynamic somewhat. I don't dispute that Akram cannot bat, but in the context of an All time test draft, that is going to be the argument which is likely to be made against the likes of streak, Akram etc. Still lovely team though, very modern-ish batting and revered and legendary bowling. I like it.
Lol thanks. Your team is very good too.

I considered him but didn't try due to the whole illegal action thing. Same with another sub continent spinner

I actually picked the other spinner you are talking about and was about to post the list, before deciding to check if there was a reason why he hadn't been picked so far. Sure enough, he was in trouble as well. I am so out of date with recent Cricketing news. :|

Anyone can help me with this?
Abbas, Gower, Ganguly, Misbah ?

Misbah's sheer grittiness means he can easily come in later and help salvage a game from a losing position to a draw. It really depends on whether Toss is going to be factored in, but if you are batting second, Misbah at 6 is better imo.

Lol thanks. Your team is very good too.
Thanks, hardly got a response for it.

Hmm ok. I wanted Gower in earlier to partner with Gooch. Misbah has played very few matches at 6 though, so I think I'll stick to him on 5. I like that he can be an anchor there too with my stroke-makers around him.

Dilip Doshi used to be the poor man's Bedi back in the day. I would have chosen him if I didn't have Bedi

The guy I think is one of the few who debuted after his 30th bday and took 100 career wickets.

He was a brilliant bowler in Ranji s but selectors chose Bedi as he was senior and experienced. Really unlucky. Any other era and he would have been like Bhajji

Made his debut in september 79 - the same month Bedi retired. Then played till 83.

Had heard his name a few times but was always lazy to check when did he actually play:p. Because there was the spin quartet then Maninder singh then Hirwani then kumble and Raju and chauhan era

Yeah alright.

I'll do the draw then. Will randomize the list. It will be 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4 and so on. Then the players concerned can decide when they want to play based on what suits them.
