... it's incredibly funny to watch players like Memphis, Jones and Lingard play like absolute fecking shite today. I mean, the whole team was naff but those three managed to stand out somehow.

I mean yeah, those pre-season games mean nothing in terms of results but those players, who had question marks over their heads thanks to last and not only season(s) should be working their fecking asses off in order to somehow fool Mourinho that they are remotely useful. What they do instead is just prove what we've known before - they're simply not good enough for the job.
Brilliantly funny post, but I agree with all the points you made.
It's good that we got found out in pre-season; at least Jose now knows what our players are like and he can now think about either bringing in replacements or using a system which prevents our weaknesses from being exposed.
When the season starts, I hope Jose has a plan to get us winning.
I also hope that Jose understands that he cannot rely Jones (not only because of his injury problems, but his playing standard which he can't improve upon, because he is always injured).

Luckily you arent Jose
So, you think Memphis and Jones are good enough?
If you do, can you please explain the argument which supports this?
I genuinely would like to know - perhaps I have missed something.

Haven't read too many pages, but I hope no one is really too worried at losing with that lineup!

It's at best half our team for goodness sake!

Yeah its a pre season friendly. Also one is coming back from injury plagued season and the other a difficult first season. Also BvB 4 games ahead of United. But you know all this already

William Prunier, CB we signed from Auxerre IIRC, think he was a mate of Eric's or was it Laurent Blanc. Anyway he was a hotshot in France and woefully lacking in any useful attribute when it came to English football.

If you would concede any of the first 3 goals in a regular match you'd be angry. A lot of the players looked real rusty.

Mata and Mkhi looked. Can't see how Rooney is supposed to start ahead of Mata. The football with the 3 M's behind Zlatan will run a lot quicker without Rooney there.

Blind's passing is still excellent. He's simply the best passer in the team and you can't take that kind of skill for granted.

Very nice to see Shaw back and so fit. 90 minutes in 37°C weather and I don't know how much humidity isn't easy for anyone never mind a player that hasn't played football in a long while.

Defense looked the most rusty. I'm not very optimistic about Jones being first choice.

Seen the goals and the first 2 look like general cock ups. Did we get pumped during the game too?

Mkhitaryan, Shaw and Bailly are the only players in that entire team today that will start for us against Bournmouth.

We missed a lot of key players and it looked like Dortmund were way fitter than us, which is to be expected.

Jones won't be first choice, it will be Smalling and Bailly. I really can't see where this Jones first choice stuff actually originates.

Jose has worked with some of the best players around. He obviously would have seen today at what level, and I'm talking about basic skill, ability on the ball, strength, some of our players are at. I personally think he must have been a bit shocked....just at the basic level, forward thinking, pace, passing, insight, instinct. We have a number of players who are obviously no way at the top level. Certainly only a tiny few could hope to get into Barca or Real's first team (and even then not regularly probably), the rest would struggle to get into their 2nd teams. I'm not dissing them, they were bought or brought through and good luck to them...but it's the reality we have.

I reckon Jose today realised just how big the task is to bring United back up with the big boys. Having said that, he's a guy that I really think can do it, albeit not in one season.....

It was definitely Blanc, circa 01/02 I think.

To be fair, by the time we got him he was past it.

EDIT: Nope, hold up, looks like we had Prunier as well, for a short loan in 95/96.

That's another game to build up the fitness for the season ahead. The result is irrelevant as far as I'm concerned.

I agree, but it's also a game where certain players needed to show at least a couple of reasons why they should remain a United player...and I think Rojo and Memphis didn't do it today...perhaps against city.

Just watched the game. We weren't great, to be fair. Guess tt was to be expected that Dortmund would be a lot sharper than us, as they are much further in pre season preparations than we are; however, we were just really sloppy today. As soon as Dortmund pressed us high up the pitch, which they extremely good at, we panicked and lost the ball.

Hoping this is just because of pre season, but we do need to practice keeping the ball under pressure. It's something we have struggled for a few years now, which is why Van Gaal said he had to put Fellaini in the team - to beat the press.

Maybe with a target man like Zlatan, than maybe we can punt the ball up the pitch more freely, knowing that we'll have someone up there to contest with it, because to be fair, Jose isn't really a massive fan of playing from the back anyway.

In a world of my own. People know me here.
You gotta love the over-reaction to pre-season friendly results. Beat some team of part-time tulip pickers from Holland, & you're going to win the lot this season. Lose a match whilst fielding a side consisting of just a handful of regulars, then suddenly the dark shadow of The Championship will be looming come next May.

If it's any consolation, this kind of hysterical behaviour isn't exclusive to United supporters.

Ah no Prunier was with us in the 95/96/97 era for a few months. I wouldn't claim to know him but a friend of mine played with him at Auxerre (and with Eric as it happens) and he's of that era.

Just seen the score!

Some players no longer have LVG as an excuse for playing shit. It's preseason so no big deal, but doubt Mourinho will have patience if they continuously underperform.

First real test will be in the Charity Shield. Until then, meh..

I know..but list the people who are missing, not including Zlatan. Nearly every one of them fans complained about last season and either thought were past it, not good enough. Rooney, Carrick, Schneiderlin, Basian, Damian to name some were all considered in relative terms last season, so it's not as though there is a bleeding cavalry out there waiting to ride in. Sure we have players like Rashford (whos here) and Martial. Plus De Gea - but I would be disappointed if we were relying on De Gea again next season!!

he's more likely on the phone to the missing asking them to step up their holiday fitness levels so that they can slot stright back in to the side in a week or so. He's also probably on the phone to Ed telling him to clear out the crap sharpish.

I remember in 1998 when we lost the Shield to Arsenal. We looked dreadful and Anelka looked like a colossus...

...that season we won the treble. Pre-season means nothing come the title run in.

They were sharper. Depay couldn't get in the game so we couldn't build enough attacking momentum in the first half. Our width was poor though Adnan had a decent run and cross in the second half. I wouldn't fret about it. You get games like this where eventually everything they hit flys in. They are a good team, while we are rebuilding. We should see a better defensive performance against City. Not convinced Herrera and Blind are ideal to give the back four protection.

Wonder if he will be tempted to move Blind back with Bailly or persist with Jones to see if more game time improves him. If he pairs Jones with Rojo I will be watching from behind the sofa.

Agreed...but take at look at that first team, apart form David May of course!
Our Community Shield team will bear no resemblance to todays. Most of todays will be either gone or on the bench. In fact some who are still on holiday might be gone as well, who knows.

Fair enough...but you get my point right?
Oh yes. I think he will be desperate to get a Pogba now and I think another CB and RB might be needed. Depends how he rates Darmian. Depends also who he wants to use as a RW and who he wants as a No. 10.

It was the second game of the preseason with the likes of Lingard and Depay starting as our attackers and Johnstone and Jones at the back, not to mention the absolutely hopeless Rojo playing as well. What did you expect against a Dortmund team almost at full strength and 5 games ahead of us in their preseason prepearation?

This forum really is something. So much whining for a preseason friendly against a sharper team which is also one of the finest in Europe, especially considering we were missing half our starting line up at the least.

It is ridiculous. Preseason friendlies mean feck all, didn't we have a good preseason under Moyes ? We all know how the season turned out.
Just be patient, a few more weeks and the real football will start.

Missed the game today. Don't care about the negative result or all the negative posts. Can someone who watched the game tell me if they noticed anything different about our setup?

Are we continuing to hold a high line like we did under LVG?
Are our transitions from defense to attack faster?
Are we generally sending more of the ball wide to our wingers or is it more central to the No. 10?
