I have feared since Mourinho was confirmed that Martial 's playing style and dribbling might be too risky for Mourinho. I will hate it if he benches Martial.
Hope this shirt number stuff and not telling him about it isn't a sign of his importance to Mourinho.
What a load of crap. Hazard was player of the year under Jose. And you would be lucky to find a player with better dribbling stats than Hazard in the PL.

Paranoia, only Deschamps is stupid enough to do such a thing.

Pretty sure Mourinho tried to sign him for Chelsea, plus Mourinhos teams have had some of the most dangerous wingers in World Football; Di Maria, Hazard, Robben, Ronaldo etc.

He wouldn't dare, the days where managers are more important than players are gone unfortunately. Regardless of all the summer dealings, martial still remain our most important outfield player at the moment and is poor management from the club if he isn't told about this change.

Didn't seem to mind Hazard.
Blamed him openly though against Atletico for not defending when he had also just came back from injury.

We'll see but it wouldn't surprise me if Martial comes off the bench more often than not.

Well it is pretty fecking stupid if we have annoyed the biggest prospect in our squad. Regardless of whether or not a number should matter, indications are that it mattered to Martial, and that is reason enough to not strip him off it.

Because we have a high quality winger to replace him with? He blamed Hazard but still played him most of the time.

This is a guy who bought and played Ozil consistently, come on! Theres no way Martial defends less than Ozil.

There is no way that Mourinho will hinder Martial, nor even consider dropping him. In fact he will probably be his most important player, much like Hazard was. Jose will ask him to work hard defensively, but he was doing that under LVG anyway.

I find it funny he would unfollow United on social media to show his grievance.

fecking stupid thing to do. I was called 'soft' for saying it's not good to take away numbers from young players like Memphis, Martial and others. A number might mean nothing to you, but it might mean a lot to the player. It's a symbol of pride.

He clearly is trying to develop his brand and his people have been constantly pushing to get votes for him to be on the new FIFA cover. Bit amateur hour from us again, reckon it's just miscommunication.

He did or the club did at least.

It's provisional, no? Can't we still swap his and Ibra's numbers?

He's number 11 for France so perhaps we didn't think it'd bother him.

That said it's not great, but probably has annoyed his marketing guys more.

He himself looks absolutely devastated here.

Yes we can but i don't see it. They have already sold a lot of new shirts with Ibrahimovic 9 on the back and it would cause a big shitstorm if they changed it. That being said Martial clearly cares about this #9 image and Ibra would be just as delighted with #11 as with the #9.

The guy who reported the news is very reliable and going by the events that followed clearly Martial wasn't pleased at all with the change.

It's very bad management from United and I don't understand how anyone can defend this terrible act.

He could be changing his twitter handle too.

Which would explain the unfollowing.

Some of you lots ought to calm down.

There is the Pogba thread for meltdowns if some of you feel like imploding(yes I'm confident Pogba is coming but still doesn't stop people from melting down at the slightest mention of Madrid in there).

Look how sad he is! He's gonna leave for Madrid next year

He comes across as a mature and down to earth lad. I really don't think changing his shirt number to 11 is going to make him want to leave the club. What's wrong with some of you.

I had to check for white text. There are a lot of terrible acts that take place but this is not one of them. He might be annoyed but let's not blow this out of proportion.

Zlatan is a bit of a cnut isn't he? Why not just take #11 instead?

Simple courtesy United. Poor management if true!
I agree, I see all the posts acting like it's nothing, but to not even talk to him about it before doing it is poor on the club's part. He openly wanted the #9 when he signed so to take it off him for a 35 year old without even discussing it breeds bad feeling.

Did we even bother to tell Januzaj he wasn't wearing 11 anymore  wonder if he found out when he was in the dressing room putting on his kit

Said it at the time that these number changes seem to have been imposed. Players are very superstitious when it comes to numbers and cant blame Martial if he is upset.

Anyway the Club can still say they were 'provisional numbers" but then Ibra has already announced that he chose No 9. Messy messy stuff

This. Who cares?
Martial obviously does, that's why it's been communicated to Bouhafsi who broke his transfer to us. And United obviously care about keeping the biggest and most expensive talent they have happy. And it's in the fans interest he is happy.

But apart from that, no one.

Adnan doesn't have much say because he can be told you are going on loan if he complaints. Plus Jose is a new Manager, he wants to impress him so he can be slected in the squad, so complaining on shirt number is the last thing on his mind.

I read that Martial is the one who wanted the number 11. Zlatan never took a number from anyone before, I don't think it is case here.
Perhaps he now thinks that his future will be as a left sided forward rather than as a "9"
