Maybe because Zlatan is primarily a striker. Martial, on the other hand, fits better on the left, on the 11
since someone has said, number doesn't matter, so it really doesn't matter Zlatan primarily plays which position.

I refuse to believe grown men really care about such things as shirt numbers. And if someone does kick up a fuss over it, especially a 20 year old who's been here for a year, ship him out, don't care how good he is. This is most likely all BS so it doesn't matter anyway.

Minor issue, will be solved when there is communication between him and club. Move on.

This is the kind of shit that will go down during the Moyes and LVG regimes, but I'm sure Jose won't allow such disrespect.

That said, the club could've informed AM but that doesn't mean he took it well.
What disrespect actually, to Martial or from Martial?
Well considering it didn't happen under LVG and Moyes but has actually happened under Mourinho I think that's the biggest reach I've ever read.
Aptly put. LVG handled the Fellaini and Bastian shirt number very well so I don't see how this would have been an issue in his time.
Am quite sure if Zlatan had requested for it just like Bastian did we wouldn't have this fallout ( if actually there is any ).

MR9 is a thing? Wasn't even the well known CR7 actually CR9 at one point? This story is just utter bull from top to bottom. Obviously we would have told him.
Ronaldo got the 9 at Madrid as all time top scorer Raul had 7 at the time .
But even Madrid knew the importance of the Jersey for marketing purposes and tried to spin the 9 as a great thing for Ronaldo by reminding everyone that it was Di Stefano's number and then having the man himself be the one to present Ronaldo.

Even then, the moment Raul was sold,Ronaldo changed to 7.

A lot of people simply don't get it. Numbers do matter especially for image rights and marketing purposes . That is a big part of players contracts negotiations. For example ,a significant part of Rooney's mammoth wage relates to image rights. Some people seem stuck in the stone ages and refuse to see that football as an industry has changed. It doesn't mean that Martial will suddenly pack his bags and leave but he and his entourage won't be best pleased . You keep your best players happy, not antagonize them .

Even Beckham changed from 7 to 23 during his commercial peak. I don't think it'll be hard to rebrand Martial considering he's only worn no. 9 for a year.
That Beckham thing doesn't really back your point at all. Actually does the opposite

Beckham moved Madrid and had to change his number simply because of the importance of it to its then holder.

That man was the home grown superstar among the throngs of foreign talents ,beloved by the Madristas in Raul Gonzalez. Had Madrid forced him out of the 7 shirt for Beckham ,things wouldn't have gone down well at all. Hell, even when they signed Ronaldo for a world record fee,Raul still kept his 7.

Ibrahimovic will likely only be here a year so Martial can get it back then.

That post was moved from another topic. Don't get me wrong. I was referring strictly from a branding perspective, not a team chemistry/honor one.

This. Storm in a teacup.

He wears 11 for France so his new AM11 Brand can incorporate both!

I'm also convinced that his PR/Marketing team will be more upset than him. That's not to say he shouldn't have been told, but it'll blow over very quickly.

United probably faxed their plans to him

Obviously he should've been told, but it's a very minor issue. Even the journalist broke this news is saying that he doesn't want to leave and is just disappointed.

Footballers who build a brand based on a shirt number are fecking stupid. Reminds me of that Cleverley 23 branding nonsense. Even the best players in the world aren't guaranteed a specific number. Look at "CR7" when he joined Madrid. If/when Martial has a season like Ronaldo's final season at United he can feel butt-hurt at being asked to wear a number not of his choosing.

Conveniently, you leave out the part that says this is all BS. All I'm saying is, hypotetically, if any player would desire to leave the club over something as silly as this, as far as I'm concerned he is free to go no matter who he is.

Probably a lot of fuss over nothing, but if Martial is childish enough to start thinking of leaving or throwing a hissy fit because we changed his fecking number then honestly...feck him. That being said I refuse to believe he was not informed of the name change, or he could be that pissed off about it if not. "Branding' and 'his agency' my arse

Agreed, far more important issues going on in the world at the moment than a shirt number.

Yeah, I bet SAF said the same thing about Mino back then when Pogba requested pay rise and guaranteed starter status.
He wouldn't have as back then Raiola wasn't probably Pogba's agent and even if he was it didn't matter because the two situations are so so different
We're talking about not being happy with a shirt number and not being given a chance to start, this is "Yaya Toure birthday cake" territory.

It will not be as simple if they have

He's 19. He's lucky he got 11. Embrace it and shut up. Manchester United don't care about the number 9 any damn way.

P.s have some respek lads it's CR7

As if a player would want to leave just because they've had their shirt number changed. And as If any body would be stupid enough to be genuinely worried a player might want to leave because he's had his shirt number changed.

And since LVG was supposed to be our manager, he wouldn't have kept the #9 since it's a number for strikers for our favorite loony. So branding it was a pretty stupid idea.

I can't believe some people are advocating selling him because he might not have wanted to change his shirt number. Madness.

I doubt Martial gives a feck. Your number is irrelevant.
Martial may not, the marketing team behind him may. It is not irrelevant when you have the whole branding strategy planned out and maybe have already signed contracts with some clients, to endorse AM9.
