Huge game. I was proper nervous about it but a bit less concerned today. All my mates at the weekend were taking the piss, saying Liverpool are going to batter United. Media have scousers at firm favourites, form etc. Then I look at who we have in the team. No matter who we play we have enough talent to beat anyone. So I don't mind being the underdogs for this one.

Love that feeling when going into a game tbh.

Its like when the pundits never put United as favourites for the title in Ferguson's last few years as manager, yet we kept winning it.

Goes without saying, United can't afford any slip-ups in the next two games, at the very least a couple of draws are needed.

Yep. That's the way I see things too.

We're not going into this game against Barca with superior players or something. We're going in with better players and if we get things right we should do wonders.

Reading some posts in here is quite surprising. Some people treating Liverpool like Pep's Barcelona

no matter which way I try and look at this, i see them battering us. Not just a 1-0 with 80% possession, i mean spanking us for goals...I'd love to be optimistic :(

We need Herrera in the Pogba "holding" role and for Pogba to be set free.

A free Pogba can cause HAVOC to defences
I hope that happens. Pogba has the talent to take on players and has an eye for a good pass. Herrera has shown what he is capable of doing. Hopefully both have a great game and United do win. But if Rooney starts, all the good work might be undone.

I feel so sick. Haven't been able to concentrate at work today or have the appetite to eat anything all day. Been looking forward to this game since a month ago. Liverpool, just beat us and get this over and done with.

Ideally I'd like to see Carrick and Herrera in midfield with Pogba, don't think it'll happen though.

    Sure keep telling yourself that.

I expected some Pool fans to buy into it anyways. He did his job right
I'm not telling my self anything. I couldn't give a feck if he walks round in Manchester United boxers has pictures of Fergie on his wall and gets his mates to call him bestie. All this
Wantend susdo commitment bollocks is tiresome. There is every chance he didn't want to play for United. Maybe he did. What I was commenting on is this inner heald belief by a large portion of you fan base that running out at Old Trafford is the be all and and all in many players minds.

I'm afraid it's not. That paticular cap tip probably goes to the Spanish giants. United are like us these days..just another top club.

I fully expect Mourinho to use all the anti-football measures in his arsenal to disrupt the flow of the game and keep the clock ticking. Lots of diving, faking injury on the floor, every set piece taking an absolute age - Might be worth putting money on DDG getting a yellow card for stalling.
    Getting the excuses in early?

Same here, been wanting to see that trio for ages. If ever there was a time to see us in a midfield 3, it's away at Anfield so it's possible.

But the player stunk up the place with his attitude and was dropped when Southampton didn't allow him to move, you think the player didn't want to move to ManUtd?

I take great offence at this comment. You are nowhere near us. You may as well have been playing in a different league for nigh on the last 3 decades.

Again. Couldn't give a toss either way. You miss my point the original reply was to the attitude of some posters. They didn't comment on the specific behaviour of the individual they commented on the bright lights and gold plated training ground that is old Trafford and Carrington.

An inability to except your place as a 2nd tear club behind Real Madrid, B Munich and Barcelona.

Maybe that makes us 3rd or 4th tear but at least I recognise it

Hoping to see this lineup. Fellaini or Rooney would seriously hamper our chances to win this one. We need Blind's passing and his corners, he must play, imo.

Mourinho fielded Mkhitaryan against City, he wasn't fit and it backfired. The players who play should be at their best, otherwise please change the lineup. Currently i'm having the flu so i know damn well the feeling.

Lingard can come in as a substitute. We're gonna win!

Herrera can't hold the midfield together by himself while Pogba goes walkabout once again. It'd end up with Herrera pressed and feck all out balls.

I expect Pogba is more likely to lose us this one than win it to be honest, unless he sorts out his positioning he could leave us routinely open to quick counters through the middle.

I'm really looking forward to this, this United side needs an authority stamping game and I think tonight is that game.
We need to get the width correct and for Pogba to carry on his form from mid week.
Imo there's more tactical flaws in Liverpools setup than ours. The set pieces, having space to exploit if we can bypass the high press, Milner at fullback etc.

I honestly think a massive part of this will come down to who we play alongside Pogba. If we play Fellaini, i can see us getting overrun, plus him probably getting carded/sent off for his stupid elbows... if we play someone more mobile, and... well better, like Herrera... maybe we'll actually do it!

How many red cards has Fellaini had this season?

There's a massive media Liverpool love-in recently. They all seem to think it's a guaranteed win for them tonight.

I would love it if we turned them over convincingly to shut them up.
What an inane comment. I haven't seen any Liverpool supporter, either here or on the other forum I inhabit (not Rawk !) spouting such shite. Everyone this side of the Pennines (whether in Manchester or Liverpool) is shiting it, nobody really believes it's a foregone conclusion either way ... and history has proven that in matches between United & Liverpool that is oh so true.

If Rooney starts we lose - it's that simple. It will give them a massive boost. If Mkhitaryan is fit it might be worth him starting given his speed and ability to dribble, to win this we have hit the counter attack fast.

I just hope we don't lose the psychological battle.

We've lost our steeliness in recent seasons and it feels like a breath of wind is enough to shake our confidence.

Mourinho has to prepare them correctly. Ibrahimovic needs to step up for this one - as a leader.

We can't turn up beaten or in fear of getting a hiding. No doubt a bunch of alcohol fuelled scousers will await the arrival of the United coach - that is just one hurdle that the players need to cope with. They also can't allow last seasons Europa League game at Anfield to creep into their thoughts.

If Liverpool are 'on it' so to speak, we will need to try and do a containment-job on them. Slow things down, frustrate them, bypass their midfield and don't allow the game to be stretched. You'd suspect Mourinho's pragmatism would be to do just this, but I wonder whether he has had enough time with our squad, in order for them to carry out his instructions with such diligence - as his Chelsea players did when they needed to.

If we were to win in this way, a dogged 0-1, it would mark significant improvement on our part.

Crucially, we can't concede early. If we do, I think we'd all fear the worst.

    Under soil heating.
They'll come out flying still high on port-filled bottles of Lucozade and crystal meth, and we won't be able to cope. The game will be over in the first half I reckon. 3-0.

Interesting to see a lot going with Herrera/Pogba/Mata in midfield as id see that getting overrun. Personally think Fellaini or Schneiderlin will start. We need to rough them up in the middle and will need the protection.
I think that's spot on. Even more so if both Lallana and Wijnaldum are missing (though I expect Lallana to start and Can to replace Wijnaldum so not as bad as it seemed a few days ago). Cutting off the supply to the forwards is by far United's best chance and it then gives Rashford/Lingard/Martial a chance to run at our defence.

Exactly what I think would be the best lineup, too.

It's a technically strong XI, and apart from Smalling, every player is comfortable with the ball at their feet, and can cope with high pressing.

That midfield and attack is the best we have in terms of movement on and off the ball, and that will be very crucial when Pool try to cut down our passing lines.

That lineup has enough pace upfront to punish Clyne and Milner/Moreno's overlapping runs on the counter, and Zlatan will prove to be a handful in the air.

Blind on the left is crucial since apart from corners he will be more conservative in his role than Shaw and smartly deal with Mane, and will be an outlet when they put our defence under pressure.

We leave gaping gaps at the edge of the penalty box when attacked from wide areas, and look vulnerable on the cutbacks - I hope Pogba and Herrera do their fair share of tracking back and closing these spaces down - because you can bet than Henderson and co will be there to take a pop.

My biggest concern in Rooney starting. Mourinho has been talking him up all week - I bet he starts.
Where has he been talking him up? Its quite obvious Rooney won't start.

I'm more concerned about Fellaini staritng. Can imagine him being used as a number 10 ahead of Mata. Actually it might not be a bad idea though.. Let them press us and lift balls over the top to Pogba/Fellaini/Ibrahimovic. You're almost always bound to be in their final third every time.

I'd love to see this team start tonight (I think they're all fit):

    -----------------------DDG

    Valencia-----Bailly----------Smalling------Shaw

    ---------------------Carrick

    -------------Herrera-------Pogba

    --Rashford----------------------------Martial
    -----------------------Ibra

    * harsh on Blind, Lingard and Mata to lose out as they've done well recently but the team above seems physical and fast enough to deal with Liverpool's pressing and pace on the counter, whilst offering pace and a counter attack threat of our own on the wing

    * Carrick to fill in for us missing Blind's passing from the back

    * I would love to see Mkhitaryan, but this might just be another City-like situation from him. Not had enough minutes in the league, brought back from injury into a high intensity match...

We need our 4 paciest defenders (Tony V, Bailly, Mike & Shaw)
Blind in the holding DM position to dictate passes.
Herrera as high-energy box-to-box, Pogba a more advanced attacking midfield role.
Rashford & Martial on the wings.
And of course Zlatan up front.

Don't think we'll see that though, Blind will probably stay as LB, Herrera will be holding & Mata might be the third midfielder.
