Jose probably thought he had Rooney, hence the comments about playing him as a number 9 or 9.5 plus he probably thought he had Zlatan as a good alternative. Sadly both appear to be past it and we desperately need a quality centre forward (more than ever before).

Realistic January options....?

We should give Rashford a few games up front first. One main worry with Ibrahimovic was that he would get in the way of Rashford's development as a striker, but we felt it was okay since Ibrahimovic would only be staying for 2 seasons at most.

Bringing in a younger striker would just hamper Rashford's development further. So I'd like to see how Rashford can get on first before making that decision.

We are over-relying on Zlatan. We don't have any forward players who consistently put half chances away. It puts too much pressure on a striker when he is the only one expected to get the goals. Zlatan would hav efar more confidence if we had wingers and a No.10 pitching in with a fair share of goals. Jose bought Mkhitaryan to help out with goals but last I heard he had been kidnapped or something. Zlatan needs an Alexis Sanches/Mahrez/Hazard/Mane alongside in the forward line to help out with the goal burden

I thought Zlatan would be a Van Persie style signing, instead he's looking a little Berbatov: a very good player but too shy to be our season definer. His god of Manchester talk is looking very empty...

Feels like a matter of time until we sign Lukaku.

Rashford and Martial are good enough. Mow needs the guts to drop Zlatan just like he dropped Rooney.

Zlatan is a passenger and as I just wrote on another thread he is a dishonest professional. cant wait to see him gone from the club. It really is time to give Rashford, Martial, Lingard, Mickhitaryan and Mata a chance to forge a frontline combination on their own. Jose needs to get real, and soon

I would be happy if we stopped trying to solve problems by spending and instead focused on what we have got already and getting the best out of them.
Do we have a single player on form right now? nope

Not sure either Rashford or Martial are ready to lead the line week in week out - in a few years maybe. Let's face it we need a world class striker in their prime. Or even a decent striker in their prime.

We need one, if not two wingers of top quality. It has been ages since we last had them and it's frustrating as hell.

As for who we could get in January...

Don't laugh but could we possibly prise Giroud from Arsenal? He seems to be very in and out of their side.

No we don't need a striker.
Front four of mkhi, mata, martial and rashford has pace, power, creativity and goals in it. I would've thought this is obvious.

We do and we aren't Rashford FC, if he's the real deal he'll find his way to the #9 position but he's still got a lot of development to do, until then we need to get a prime striker, We haven't had one since RvP's first season here.

Martial on the left with Rashford through the middle. Worked for LVG FFS.
exactly!
plus you add one of the best centre midfielders in the world, the best play in the bundesliga last season, a fit shaw..... and we should be flying.

instead we martial goes bye bye, we try and re invent rashford as a winger.... and play a 35 year old up front for 3 games in one week!...... what going wrong isn't rocket science!

If only we'd spent big in the Summer on a creative player who can play wide eh?

I believe the Bundseliga is a good place to look.....
Even with Mkhitaryan in the team I still think we need another wide player, Rashford and Martial are both strikers and should be played as such.

This is the team I would like to see us play.
Rashford/Martial
New LW---Mata---Mkhitaryan
Pogba Herrera

Give Depay a start and play Rashford up top. See how that works.

We could go for a new striker imo. SAF always loved to have four. But who are available?

Mourinho has always liked a big target man up front. Drogba suited him perfectly, he was very good at holding the ball up with his strength, would regularly win field position with clever dives to alleviate pressure. He was like an extra centre back at defensive set pieces, and had the natural fitness to do it for 90 minutes every game.

The only player I can think of is Lukaku that's even close to that profile of striker. Although I'd much prefer a more fluid attack with interchangeable attacking positions, something like Mata/Mkhitaryan and Martial either side of someone like Griezemann. Liverpool are showing how many goals can be scored without the out and out striker.

it means someone who I watched today pretend to carry out his responsibilities. I was a Zlatan fan up to the last couple of weeks. and having been at all the home games this season and watched him, particularly the last couple, it is very difficult to make a case for him. What I saw from him, particularly today, may not be obvious on camera, but its hard to ignore when youre there

I am yeah. Another trip to OT and more disappointment. But honestly I can handle results being shite. This was different. Watching a big name United player do what he did today ( and no I dont mean missing chances) was infuriating

sorry I already had in another thread. I saw more than a few instances where Zlatan pretended to do his job. the sort of stuff the tv cameras dont follow. forget the chance taking. one was when Burnley were about to launch a free kick into our area. Zlatan ambled back and took up a position on the edge of the area in the centre. he stuck his arms out in the lining up the defence classic pose. then as the free kick is taken all the united players get close to their men and head back towards the goal. Zlatan doesnt. he simply walks away with his back to the play. in other words he made a big show of being there for his teammates and as everyone focussed on the ball I watched him duck out of actually making the effort to get back. he just let his man go. nothing came of it but it was just one example of someone not being honest in their efforts. that sort of stuff used to drive me mad when I played (even at my level) so I hate to see it in a United player. Cant admire this fellas effort at all. (after his smiley shirt swapping last week I seriously question his motivation)

Should've never let chicharito leave, if he was presented with those chances today he would've scored a hat trick

Should've never let Nani leave either he's still good enough to do a job when you consider the alternatives are lingard, Memphis and rashford.
