Barcelona's ability to offer Lionel Messi an improved contract will rest on their capacity to raise revenue from sponsorship deals and player sales, chief executive Oscar Grau says.

His contract expires in 2018, so there are/will be a lot of rumors on his potential move

He is Woodward's Moby Dick. Messi would be his no more worlds to conquer moment.
The club that Ronaldo and Messi played for. Woodward would retire on the spot and begin training to be an astronaut or time traveller.

I swear he signs a new contract every year, how is it just up in 2018?

Barcelona are as rich as us. Why would they need to raise cash to renew a contract?

It's either stay at Barca or Newell's Old Boys. Anything else is either fantasy or a huge stretch.

But it's not fantasy or a huge stretch to say that Newell's Old Boys can buy Messi in his prime?

If he went back home, it would likely be for free or barca would set up some shady deal for future prodigies.
He probably won't be in his prime in 2 and half years anyway.

He's probably getting a new contract and that would be it.

2018 isn't in 2.5 years, and no way would Barcelona allow an asset worth over £100m probably to just run his contract down and walk out.

If he goes back home, it will likely be when he's worth a lot less than he is now, as a 35 year old or something.

Shit. He's only 29. I had to check that there.
And yes you're right, 1 & a half years. :D

They seem to sign a new contract every year. How could it end next year? I thought Ronaldo and Messi signed contracts one after the other

He doesn't need Barcelona's approval though.

They are as rich as us in terms of revenues but they have cash flow problems. They're at their constitutional limit of wage/revenue ratio. This is compounded by having to pay for renovations to the stadium and having issues renewing commercial deals. They also have a squad that needs a bit of reinvestment and just put a sizable amount towards Neymar and Suarez's new contracts. In other words, their finances are stretched.

At what point does it make business sense to sell him? How much can you commit to a player that's about to turn 30?

It would taint their global image quite severely, surely?

I'm pretty sure that some club in Europe will offer him the money that he's asking. Even if he has 29, he's ridiculously good.

He's playing for Barce, not Millwall
Your post made me wonder why Arsenal don't go full retard on Messi? When I look at how much Kroenke is willing to spend on the Rams, I'm surprised about the fact that he didn't try to dazzle the planet with something like that at Arsenal, he and the club could afford it, if they raid some sponsors at the same time.

Because Barcelona care so much about these new prodigies they'd lose a sure fire star who is most likely the greatest player to play the sport who's still in his 20s for free. Okay then, think man.

Keep in mind Barcelona already pay Messi the same money that United is paying Pogba and Zlatan combined. The reported new contract they want to offer him will be worth €35M a year after tax. That's about £1.1M per week.

Barcelona will find the money
