So, this is basically Nintendo fanboys getting excited about their first open world game, which essentially came 15 years too late? Alright then. And whoever posted that list ... sorry, but that list is bullshit.

Witcher 3 has incredible scores!

It's average is 93 + on metacritic, no?

Hmm I'm not sure Deus Ex (unless we're talking about the original) is as deserving though.

GTA IV is massively inflated though.
The original. In my mind the greatest game of all time but it's not as much an everybody pleaser as others. Witcher 3 isn't anywhere near the best reviewed games. IGN for example gave it a 9.3 whereas they gave GTAIV a 10 if I'm not mistaken.

Na Mario games always get good reviews because they're truly great games. The ones on the list are masterpieces.

I think a good way of filtering Metacritic lists is comparing the critics score with the user score. Won't always be accurate, but will help you pick out overrated games when there's a big difference between the critics score and the user score. The only games that look out of place on that list are the two GTAs. And it's no surprise they both have the lowest user review scores on the list.
Nope. They're great games but they get reviewed better than other great games (some greater) for other reasons.

Some of us have been playing open world games since Daggerfall, and are still utterly blown away by this game.

Oh of course you have played other Open World Games, this is just the first Zelda Open World.

I'm sorry, I'm just done with Nintendo rehashing the same 5 games since the late 90's.
And this is just same. I'm not saying it's a bad game, it's not for sure, but it's the same Zelda formula with mechanics new for the series itself, but otherwise outdated by 5 years. There's nothing ground breaking, nothing new.

Top 5 of all time? Never.

Throughout the years various friends made me play Ocarina of Time, Wind waker and that last zelda as they've sworn they were "the best thing ever".

Not falling for that again, nope. I'm not buying a glorified nvidia tablet for that.

It's pretty much love it or hate it at this point. If I want to play a Zelda, I will play the 90's Ocarino of time, the rest is just all the same.
And the world wasn't that appealing to me in the first place.

You could argue the same for every GTA game since 3, or every Elder Scrolls game since Morrowind. Or indeed every 3D platformer since Mario 64 or any game released in a prexisting genre.

At this point the fundamental mechanics of open world gaming are largely set. However its the ability of each game to progress the genre that makes it innovative or not, not simply being the first.

Simply playing Zelda for a couple of hours makes it clear that this is a cut above most open world games I've played before. Not because it's all new, but just because it nails it in a way I've not seen before.

Top five ever? Too early to say that. We'll see in a year or two how it stands up. But unless it gets a lot worse quickly, its certainly going to be one of the standout titles of this gen.

With the Switch or just on the Wii U?

I'm so tempted too but I can't afford a Switch for a long time.

Oh, you are right. Still GTA produced two standout titles, III and IV.
Most Elder Scrolls are a good game, the standout is still Skyrim.
Because those games are special.

What's special about this Zelda? It's the same old story, the same old mechanics on a subpar console with (sorry) horrible graphics. I can live with another "style", it can be very cool, but this is just a lazy excuse for lacking hardware.

How many hours have you put in to come to that conclusion?
Zero, since I sure as hell won't buy another Nintendo console I'll never use. But please don't try to tell me the gameplay is so much better better and different when you play it yourself then when you have watched around 6 hours of gameplay on stream and YouTube. It just doesn't interest me in the slightest and it seems I'm not alone

Yeah, because watching a video of a game is clearly a better indication of how good it is than actually playing it yourself :houllier:.

I find it a bit odd that you'd watch 6 hours of game play for a game you seem to have made your mind up about before it was even released.

I like let's plays and one of my favourite youtoubers is playing it right now, it's kind of a byproduct.

Skyrim as the standout

No wonder you think there are no new ideas!
Haven't played the older ones and for it's longetivity, vastness and other factors, it's a standout for sure wouldn't you say?

Not even sure what that has got to do with your second sentence.

But I will leave you alone with your new toy, as always, criticism of Nintendo products is a sensitive topic.

Not really, you are just clearly talking a load of bollocks

But yeah, you've watched 6 hours of it on youtube (yeah right) so we should all bow to your superior knowledge of what it's like!

As for your Skyrim comments, again I guess you'd know best since you haven't played the others. Have you at least watched them on youtube?

It is generally considered as a milestone, so I'm not even sure if it is relevant here if I have played the others or not.

And this is just another example of the sensitivity when it comes to Ninentdo, apparently you are already talking a "Loads bollocks" when you are disputing ludicrous claims like "top 5 game already" or "game of the year already".
And they are making this statements in march before they even have finished the game. That's serious bullshit for a game like this. And again: I'm not saying it is a bad game ffs! Just that it has a lot of downsides which surely prohibits it from entering the heights some are predicting here.
As foe the I initially criticized, which included games on places 2 and 3 which wouldn't even make most people's top 100.

It's more your stupidly arrogant way of talking about it, the fact you lump all open world games in as one (which shows a lack of knowledge), the fact you judge based on watching youtube and last, but not least, the way you are calling everybody fanboys for liking.

So yeah, you are talking utter nonsense and look quite foolish doing so. I mean fanboys, come on, who even has those arguments any more? Ironically it's only you acting like one with your anti-Nintendo stance.

Play the game or don't, that's your choice. But don't start heavily criticising others for doing so and having opinions on it.

This is just ridiculous. If you haven't put in a significant amount of time yourself, you're disqualified from properly judging a game. You can use it to gauge for yourself whether or not you'd be interested and clearly you're not interested, which is fair enough. Just leave it at that.

On your earlier comment about the visuals - "horrible graphics" you called them - I disagree. I think it looks beautiful. I love visuals like those The Witcher 3 or Horizon Zero Dawn, but sometimes I do wish AAA games wouldn't always aim for those graphics. Games with graphical styles like Dragon Age VIII or Ni No Kuni, I also love those. They're completely unrealistic and cartoony but that gives the devs so much more flexibility to do whatever they want and not worry about how realistic it might look. This game is like that as well.

And all your substantial claims against my argument that this has no place in any "best game ever" list? Must have missed those ....

Oh, I'm with you there. The graphically most appealing title of the last 2 (or is it 3 already) years for me was actually Life is Strange, which wasn't even open world. And for all my love for the Witcher 3, I like the more ... cartoonish, washed out graphics of Horizon - Zero Dawn better as well. Ultrarealism always bears the danger of looking a bit strange when it isn't done perfectly and tends to age worse.
My problem with this Zelda title isn't the look, but the implementation. Distance rendering is just one example.

I hate modern day obsession with grafix and resolution. Nintendo have never been about that.

I am having more fun on this game than I have for years on many Steam games.

I'be played a few hours, so unlike you, I'll leave my judgments to when I've actually played it enough.

Though are you actually saying that no matter what, this has no place on a top list?

That doesn't change my other post on you though, you don't have a clue what you are talking about. Like below:

Modern day youtube gamers are the worst. All shiney shiney and judgment on a few (lower res to boot) videos.
Definitely.

Gamers today are knobjockeys. I am nearly 40 and grew up on Nintendo, Spectrum and Amiga. It's all about the gameplay, not terrorflops.

By natively developing the title for the console it's meant for, so that trees and Stones don't randomly pop up in the (not so far) distance. That's not even touching the upscaling problems this game has with HDTV's, but those are not the games, but more the hardwares fault.

So you think this game has a big pop in problem? And what specific upscaling problems are we talking about here?

May I ask which youtube videos you've watched and what resolution you watched them in?

The console is rendering the graphics in 900p and upscale them to 1080p to display them on HDTV's, meaning serious frame drops some times. One quick google search will bring you to that and reviews mention it as well. But again, the hardware is lacking here, not the game (although not developing the game for Wii U in the first place maybe would have circumvented this issue)

I've not played a Mario game since I had my SNES in the mid nineties and have never played Zelda, does this make me a bad person?

Looking at the reviews of this do make me want to play it a lot, but I can't really justify another console :(

For a start, upscaling doesn't quite work the way you think, but that's beside the point.

There aren't "serious" frame drops for one thing, nor does this game have major pop in issues. It also runs identically on portable to screen mode since the patch in my experience, and I'd be the first to moan about framerates. Is it 100% smooth? No. But then is Witcher, Horizon or Skyrim? Or any other open world game? No.

In terms of power, may I ask what you were expecting? Did you think this machine would make a dedicated home console like the PS4? If it did, it would no longer do what it's supposed to, and I for one don't need yet another console like the ps4 of Xbone. This is a mobile gaming platform that you can use on the tv.

As far as Zelda graphics, they are beautiful actually. As I'm sure you know, graphics aren't all engine and power they are as much art style too. As @Bill.s.preston said earlier, it's very much like a Ghibli film and I love that. You might not, that's fine, but they are pretty far from being terrible.

Me. Haven't watched the video but I've no complaints with the performance or graphics apart from an occasional framerate stutter that lasts 2-3 seconds. I do think it's incredibly strange of them not to use the gamepad screen though. Could have been used for the map and inventory management.

I know that you were talking for Dragon Quest VIII
