No. The only thing Van Gaal did was managing to get us into 4th place in his first season, qualifying for the preliminary rounds of the Champions League. Compared to Mourinho, who has made two finals and has already won one in his first year at this club. If we end up winning the EL final too, it means we've won two trophies and qualified directly for the group phase Champions League, this would mean his first season at United is undisputedly more succesful than Van Gaal's first season.

If we don't win the Europa League it's more interesting. What's the better managerial performance? Finishing sixth, winning the League Cup and making a European final and qualifying for the Europa League, or finishing fourth while qualifying for Champions League football with no finals at all? Especially taking into account that Van Gaal could purely focus on domestic football and had the luxury of having no European matches, something which has proven to be a great advantage based on Liverpool's title challend under Rodgers, Leicesters title win, Chelsea's title win this year, etc., it's just pretty hard to make a case in Van Gaal's favour when comparing his and Mourinho's first season at United.

Even more so when you bring in facts like rival clubs appointing some of the most succesful coaches in the game, Guardiola, Klopp and Conte weren't there in Van Gaal's first season, arguably making it easier for him to finish 4th (look at Wenger missing out on top 4 for the first time in 20 years for indication). Then there's the style of football. We've hardly been great this season, but the football played under Van Gaal in his first season was dreadful, absolutely dreadful, despite grinding out a 4th place finish. Perfectly illustrated for those who've forgotten, by having likes of Van Persie, Falcao, Rooney, Di Maria Mata in his squad, and those five players combined did not even manage to score more than 40 league goals under Van Gaal's magical tactical instructions.
I'm not going to declare LvG's time here a success. But now because there's no alternative and the media protect Mourinho suddenly the standards are lowered drastically. You're fooling yourself and your clutching at straws and you probably know it, I'm not going into all the stuff people here make up to make it look like he's done a good job. The man is not a guarantee for success, he has failed in Madrid, at Chelsea and now at United, in the old days he used to have something invincible about him and had his players play with all the confidence and prowess in the world, but I've seen nothing of that kind in this United team. It's over, he's lost what he had, and referees and opponents don't fall for the same mind games anymore either. The only ones who still do are the supporters who were expecting him to challenge for the PL this season since december '15. A sneaky, cheating win tomorrow won't change that.

You randomly bring an FA Cup into the discussion, imply we need to win the Europa League to have a successful transfer market(?), state that someone who wins La Liga, Copa del Rey and makes the semi-finals of the Champions League 3 out of 3 times (first time in 6 years Real managed to do so) is a failure. Then you top it off by claiming his 3rd place finish with Chelsea, followed by winning the Premier League the next year is a failure too, despite the rather obvious and ironic fact that these results are better than anything your precious Van Gaal has ever done in England.

Did you say I'm the one clutching at straws?:lol:

While you're right that there are greater priorities over sport;it's sporting events like these that are bring people together.

It's fundamentally important that some semblance of normal life continues or the terrorists win. Therefore, while in the big scheme of things a cup final pales by comparison, we soldier on. That trophy takes on a greater significance in that Manchester now stands firm and we win it for the people of Manchester.
Just feels numb to me now, win or lose.

I'm not going into the comparison here, the "signs of progress" topic is conveniently closed (and there are no borefest or shots on target topics anymore either). You suggested here that the Dutch media wanted to make Van Gaal look better by telling how bad Mourinho does, but we both know that's not how it works with Van Gaal and the Dutch media. And it's not all about England, especially not when it comes to the EL and the CL.

The name Johan Cruyff should explain it.
And the fact that Ajax was a key team on the European stages, feeding the Dutch national team. They won the old Champions League from 70 to 73 and they did 2 finales in the 90s (1 won, 1 lost). It's a big name of football that represents the total soccer of that time, Barcelona wasn't like that until they had Messi and to a lesser extend, Ronaldinho.

So here in Holland football shows and a number of pundits getting carried away again as the Dutch like to do. THey hate Mourinho and they alk as if we have a team of dockworkers and that we have no clue how to play football and will be set up to defend and play hoofball.
Aad de Mos said a week ago that it's done, Mourinho's way of playing will play to Ajax's strength with their pressing game. Derksen and Gijp destroying Mourinho, biggest dutch newspaper guy A Valentijn Driessen wrote a column massacre-ing Mourinho with the headline "most arrogant disgusting manager ever", etc etc.

Tldr version: dutch think we are rubbish, are in buoyant mood, hate Mourinho's guts and his football, think ajax's pressing game will shit on us.

Help me out here. Has any English side ever won all three euro trophies?
I we win tomorrow. I have a feeling we may be the first team to have won the European cup/Champions league, The cup winners cup, and the UEFA cup/Europa league.

I think Chelsea and Liverpool have.

Edit: Liverpool haven't won the cup winners. But Chelsea have won all 3. We wouldn't be the first.

This is what I'm fearing as well, United being more affected by the pressure of the situation than Ajax. Pretty nervous about the game already. So much at stake for us. Win, and it's a pretty good season. Lose, and it's a pretty terrible one. :nervous: :nervous:
Yes, exactly. The whole perspective of the season will be massively affected by this game. Win it, and there will be a feel-good factor running through the club and a great deal of optimism about next season. Lose and it will cast a bit of a shadow over the club, not exactly the end of the world but it might well impact hugely in terms of signing targets for the summer.
It really is a huge game for United and I just hope the players and manager seize this opportunity on the day to get things back on track.

Such a big game. We need to get back in that champions league, and I hope if we do, everyone joins me in not being such a spoilt bastard and moaning at whatever the draw gives us!

What's this about a cow predicting an Ajax win tomorrow? Can we not kill it and give to our players as a pre match meal? That'll help.
