EVANS BACKS CARRICK TO KEEP PLAYING

Jonny Evans has backed his former Manchester United team-mate Michael Carrick to "play for years yet", ahead of the 35-year-old's Old Trafford testimonial on Sunday.

Carrick signed a one-year contract extension last weekend that will keep him at the club until June 2018 and manager Jose Mourinho described him as "one of the true professionals of the game".

ManUtd.com recently spoke exclusively to Evans, currently at West Bromwich Albion, to garner a personal tribute to his friend and the Northern Irishman offered a unique insight, shining a light on "the footballer's footballer" and explaining why our evergreen midfielder still has plenty to offer...

Firstly, how much does Michael deserve his Old Trafford testimonial?
Michael has been around the club for such a long time, he has been the focal point in central midfield and he is an absolutely brilliant person. He has never got the credit that he does deserve. Any player who plays with him will be blown away by how good he is. He is the footballer’s footballer. Anybody who appreciates good football, watching the game and understanding how things happen will enjoy Michael Carrick. Almost every year that I was at United, when you went to vote for your player of the season Michael was always the one in my mind. I always appreciated him and you could tell what a good player he was.

The United fans appreciate him and famously sing how it’s “hard to believe it’s not Scholes”. Just how good were those two together in central midfield?
When Sir Alex Ferguson was manager, there was always rotation. There were spells when Michael and Paul played a lot in midfield together, but we also had Darren Fletcher and Anderson coming into the equation. He always changed things up and there was a great standard of midfield players within the club. The quality that they all possessed was that they knew how Sir Alex Ferguson wanted to play football and had a great way of expressing themselves on the pitch. But Michael and Paul had a great partnership at a time when Manchester United had a great domination of the ball and whenever those two played then Man United controlled the games. When we played in Europe, a lot of the times when we had a run in that competition were down to those two. They were always appreciated by foreign players, too.

When you were a centre-back at United, was it a dream to play behind Michael and Paul?
Yeah it was because they used to come and get the ball off you! They would demand the ball, they would come and make it easier for you, they would pass to you at the right time, try to get you involved in the game and they appreciated centre-backs that passed the ball as well. That was always something that was a positive. If somebody is always giving you angles and encouraging you to play football in a way that you both agree with then it makes things a lot easier.

A little bit like Scholes, Michael is quiet away from the pitch and doesn’t court any attention. People don’t know too much about him, so what can you tell us?
Michael is obviously a quiet person but one of those guys, when you get to know him, he really opens up and likes to have a laugh. He is somebody who lives life to the full and is a real family man. He has got a great family at home, he cherishes that and makes the most of his time with his family. He really appreciates that side to life.

Michael took the number 16 shirt off Roy Keane – which was a big deal - and has made it his own ever since. Do you have sympathy for the person who wears it next?
No I don’t think so. I don’t think the number was ever going to be an issue for Michael when he came. With footballers, and knowing Michael’s personality, the number won’t have mattered. The biggest thing for him was being the best player he could be for Manchester United and showing his qualities. People were probably looking for the next Roy Keane but Michael Carrick is a totally different type of player. Michael has never changed the way he has wanted to play or has played. He has a special skill. His reading of the game, his technique with both feet, he is always receiving the ball on the back foot, on the turn and opening up the pitch is something that I will always remember him for.

How long can Carras play on for?
I always used to say to Michael that he has got the best physique of any footballer I have ever seen! He is lean, he has got great posture, he is in proportion and you can see that his body is designed to be a footballer. It is the perfect build for this game. He looks after himself, he is very professional and he can go on for a long time. He can play for years yet, I really believe that.

PREVIEW: MICHAEL CARRICK'S TESTIMONIAL

When and where can I watch it? Michael Carrick's testimonial at Old Trafford will take place on Sunday 4 June at 14:30 BST, and will be shown exclusively live in the MUTV appoutside of the UK and Ireland. Fans in the UK and Ireland will be able to watch live coverage on Sky and Virgin Media platforms, including free-to-air Sky channel 418. Live coverage from the Theatre of Dreams starts at 13:30, with highlights and reaction available on-demand within the app from 23:00 BST.

Are tickets still available? Yes! Michael confirmed this week that over 65,000 tickets have already been sold for the match, which is mightily impressive at the end of a long, congested season for United. Tickets are still available to buy via ManUtd.com/CarrickTestimonial.

New kick-off time... Due to the benefit concert for the victims of the Manchester terror attack being held on Sunday evening at the nearby Old Trafford cricket ground, Carrick's testimonial organisers have agreed to bring the match forward by 90 minutes from 16:00 to 14:30. In a statement, Michael said:

“We have had to change the kick-off time and I'm sorry if this causes an inconvenience to anyone attending the game. Our game, and the coming together of Manchester, has taken on a much greater significance since the tragic events of Monday 22 May. I personally want to extend my heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and all those affected. We want everybody to know that we are Manchester and we show a sense of togetherness and we give our full support to the benefit concert after our game. I’m looking forward to seeing all of you this weekend at the testimonial to celebrate what our city is about.”

So, who's playing? A host of current and former superstars have been confirmed for the game, which will see United's Champions League-winning team of 2008 reunite to take on Carrick's All-Star XI. This is who is confirmed for the game at present:

United: Edwin van der Sar, Gary Neville, Wes Brown, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Mikael Silvestre, Patrice Evra, Michael Carrick (naturally), Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Ji-sung Park, Owen Hargreaves, Anderson (injured), Darren Fletcher, Wayne Rooney, Louis Saha, Dimitar Berbatov.

Carrick's All-Star XI: Shay Given, Phil Neville, Michel Salgado, Jamie Carragher, John Terry, Eric Abidal, Joan Capdevila, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Marcos Senna, Gaizka Mendieta, Clarence Seedorf, Damien Duff, Richard Garcia, Michael Owen, Robbie Keane, Eidur Gudjohnsen.

And who is managing? Sir Alex Ferguson will return to the Old Trafford dugout to manage his 2008 Champions League-winning United side. Carrick's former West Ham boss, Harry Redknapp, will also lead the All-Stars and he's excited for the occasion. ”I’m really looking forward to coming back to Old Trafford to celebrate what has been a terrific career," he told us. "Michael is a fantastic boy and a class act, both on and off the pitch. It will be great to see Sir Alex again too, he’s a friend of mine and we had some great battles down the years – mind you, he came out on top in most of them!" Fans attending the game can read the full interview in the official matchday programme, which will be on sale at the stadium.

A message from Mourinho... Speaking ahead of the testimonial, Jose said: “Michael is a phenomenal person and a true professional. He gives stability in our game and mental freedom to the other guys around him to be more attacking. He has a big understanding of the game and is a great role model for our younger players. This will be a fitting way for Michael and his family to celebrate his achievements over the past 11 years and for Michael to create a lasting legacy through his foundation.”

Where is the money going? All monies raised after expenses will be distributed to his chosen charities through the newly-created Michael Carrick Foundation, itself a registered charity. The charities will be based in Manchester and Newcastle initially, focusing on young people and their development. Also benefitting will be projects of the Manchester United Foundation, which works across some of the most deprived areas of Greater Manchester, using the passion for the club to help and inspire youngsters.

Are you allowed to take cameras in? a 550D with a small lens? I imagine not especially with all the police about. I'd only use for the players coming out of the tunnel

Well that's.... fitting.

If only we had these at OT...

So Berbatov is going to play under Fergie

If anyone in the cafe remembers how bitter he was towards Fergie when he left United :wenger:

Even more surprising is Hargreaves on Fergie's team! What's the betting he lasts more than 5 minutes?

feck, completely forgot about Anderson. Would have been nice to see Nanderson back in action but Portugal have a friendly.

Fairplay...pretty much everyone from the actual 2008 XI has returned. Some great names on the other team too.

Hopefully Real win the final then Ronnie can get on a plane to Manchester the next day.

Saw a tweet saying that LvG will be attending the match, be nice to have the loon back at OT. Side note, glad to see so many have taken time to come back and play with Carrick, shows how well respected he is. True professional, he's earned this testimonial and I'll be very glad if he ends up retiring with us!

Am going and can't wait. Should be a great day.

Nice to see Carrick extending an invite to LVG as well.

Class from Anderson.

andowlovee Dear Michael
First of all let me congratulate you for the last achievement, the UEFA Europe League, which was amazing.

I would like to tell you that it was an honour be invited to participate in tour testimonial. I was delighted and excited to be back and join my previous team mates and also the magnificent Manchester United supporters, but unfortunately I will not be able to celebrate this important and significant day in your life. I feel sad for that and please apologise me, but my injury needs treatment that I can’t fail to be prepared and recovered for the next important games of my team.

I want you to know that it was a privilege have played with you on my 8 years in Manchester United, with such an amazing professional and also human being. It was a privilege meet you. You deserve the best and I wish you the greatest success the world has to give you. I’m proud of the friendship we built during the past years.

Enjoy your day!

Best regards

Maybe so, I just found it a little tasteless seeing someone moan about the inconvenience a concert for such a good cause has caused them. It's being done in nothing but good faith and for a fantastic cause and he's moaning about it disrupting his train time and costing him £40. I still think a little perspective would go a long way.
Get where you're coming from, very good event, however, there was already a high profile event planned on the day and around the same time, it's silly of them to plan the concert within conflicting times especially since they're both in old Trafford. They could and should have done it on another day.

I like how the time of the match is in the threadtitle, but the date is nowhere to be seen.

I was just about to post in here asking if anyone knew the date the game was being played. All I remember was that it was before the UCL final.

Wasn't that during his first game or something crazy too?

Match was played in La Paz in Bolivia, 3400m above Sea Level. It's not a sign of fitness needing Oxygen, everyones bodies react differently, impossible to tell how your body will react. Di Maria had to get it also when playing for Argentina in Bolivia, it's quite common, most teams will have them on the bench when playing above 2500m (Quito, La Paz, Potosi etc)

What Time are people setting off? With 2 big events and all extra security I might just get there super early
