nah i dont see jose playing a back 3. maybe in a few games as part of tactics but not as a regular formation
 
All I care about with our transfer signings is that we bring in players who improve our squad overall, who make us a more cohesive unit, who are desperate to wear the shirt, play for the manager and can add more than what we already have. If the signings we make this summer do that, then I'll be happy.

I think there's some proper fetishism that goes on when it comes to 'big name' players and we've had some fantastic talents come play for the club who underperformed or were just flat out shite and we've had some low-key signings that have become club legends. Impossible to judge incoming players without hindsight, but I'm in complete agreement with the positions we look to be targeting.

It moved on from defensive full backs decades ago.

Wing backs are the next logical step. If your width is being provided by your full backs then you want to reduce their defensive burden and increase their attacking potential. Hence three at the back, where the LCB and RCB can go across and there will still be adequate central cover. Conte is clearly ahead of the curve in understanding this. The tactics in the premier league last season reminded me of when Mourinho arrived in 2004. Before him almost everyone played a variant of 4-4-2, when he left 4-3-3 was seen as standard. The same thing is starting to happen now with 3 at the back. Mourinho used it a few times, Pochettino more so and Wenger has already made the switch. More will follow or get left behind.

To say Griezmann was not what the team needs right now, gosh! You talk like Mourinho didn't know what he's doing, haven't watched the guy play and was going to force him to play upfront alone or as #10. Why is it so hard admiting he would play here as he usually does, as secondary-striker?
 
Well looks like Fabinho may be a no go. Makes it alot worse IMO as he would of been one of the best signings we could of made.

Yes. Although as one of those in the 'Perisic is deeply mediocre' camp, his presence on the list almost makes it look worse. I'd rather just see Martial on the team sheet more regularly.

Griezmann would've been great, but in his absence there's no silly money signing who seems worth it to me this summer. Mbappe is wildly unproven, and the number of people happy for us to blow a massive world record fee on him after six months of football shows how totally football has lost its mind.

We could do with a LB. I like both Shaw and Blind - the former as a real talent, the latter as a very reliable fill-in - but if Shaw is going to keep getting injured, we need someone else there. Lose Perisic, add Mendy or similar.

I think Morata will do well for us but yes, Perisic and Morata overall would be very underwhelming considering we are in dire need of quality players in the final third.

I like Morata as well but I don't see him as an improvement on Zlatan.

The reality is that we don't have any game changers though. We don't have a Hazard or a Sanchez; and the Perisic signing signals the construction of a bland, blunt, reactive team that wont be good enough.
 
It would be underwhelming to be honest. But I have a hunch there will be a muppet-tastic surprise somewhere along the line this summer, probably a big-name attacker.

Even if there isnt and those four were it (or maybe someone else instead of Fabinho) it isnt the end of the world though, if we see big improvements from Martial and Miki next season. Which, really, we should be seeing. Rashford will also improve.

Sometimes the missing piece of the jigsaw isnt obvious. Like when we signed Carrick and went from average to world beaters in a season. I think the right signing in the same position could have a similar impact. So yeah, underwhelming, but I woudnt be panicking about it.

The only improvements on Zlatan are Lewandoski and Suarez and they arent coming here.

It seems our best option is to get a young up and coming striker that has the potential to have Zlatan's impact.

I'm not criticising the Morata signing, I'm quite happy about it in fact, I just think it would be foolish to think that he and Perisic would improve our attack.

I know you're not, but Morata isnt being bought to improve the team; he's there to fill the gap of Ibrahimovic.

Our season was lacking goals contribution from players other than the striker. Our best scorer from other areas was Mata who got injured for a significant part of the season.

I agree that we seem to be lacking one extra player that can inject some attacking quality into the team (it was probably going to be Griezmann, the deal was by all accounts being worked on for a long time, but fell through).

I think we were in the market for a no.10/SS, if we get a good one in then id be confident that we'll do well in the coming season.
 
I'm jumping on this bandwagon. We will improve but we won't make up an extra 30 goals unless we get another attacker that will guarantee 15/20 goals. Griezmann was supposed to be it. Now who's left?

You think that's worse than Liverpool and/or Arsenal? I mean I get the rest but those additions would put us above those two, especially if Arsenal lose their only match winner
 
NO. would still leave us short of firepower. we needed a second goal-scorer last season; without Zlatan we need two

No it is not worse but Arsenal and Liverpool can already score goals while we can't and we also lost the only player who could. Would be suicide to go into the season without more proven goals imo.

Whats your suggestion if you are unhappy with these 4?

Way I see it is
1) Lindelof is an upgrade at CB on Jones, Smalling, Rojo & Blind.
2) Fabinho can offer cover at RB but if signed would play DM, which would free Herrera and more importantly Pogba. More quality and depth in midfield which we have lacked for a long time
3) Perisic, while he is not Messi etc he will offer natural width on the left hand side. Bring more balance to the front line and avoiding us playing Martial/Rashford/Mata/Rooney etc on the wing as none are natural there.
4) Morata, we need a presence up top to replace Zlat. He's got a good record and could be good for 20-25 goals.

I admit there are possible alternatives to these players, but I can see the logic in obtaining a player in each of these positions.

The end game is a better team balance, and if we signed these 4 in particular (unsure if we will or not, but lets say we do for arguments sake) then the shape of the squad would be better than it is now, that much I don't think you can argue with.

Could add another midfielder for further competition for places. I think Morata 1st choice striker, with Rashford/Martial as back up is strong and perisic may well surprise the doubters
 
I'd say we need:

2 strikers
2 midfielders
2 defenders (one already acquired).
 
More of what we already have.

"Decent to good" players.

I would be bitterly disappointed and would prefer no one than those four.
 
Since Dembele is on the market.... I would say Dembele ahead of Perisic and I would be happy.
 
The Griezmann debacle has really fecked plans up it seems. Put Griezmann's name alongside Fabinho, Morata, Lindelof and Perisic and it looks much better.

As well as the players we bring in, I'm hoping for our plays to make a step up as well. Bailly will continue to improve and should be even better next year. Shaw needs to show what he's got in him. Pogba needs to show those world class performances more regularly (and hopefully with a DM he'll show that). Rashford has another level in him. Mkhitaryan and Martial need to step it up. Midfield and defence should be the best its been in years really. We need goals, though.

That was so 2 weeks ago.
Time to take the eggs out of the Griezmann basket and put them firmly in the Sanzhez one. Offer £80m and just get it done! We sorely need to add a world class attacker.
 
certainly nothing like the DiMaria/Falcao or Ibrahimovich/Pogba feel good factor transfers, but then again, neither of those double whammy galactico signings delivered as we hoped, so maybe this is what is required.

Id be fine with these 4 players, they feel like necessary cogs to build a great side, but we are still short of a world class game changer.
 
We struggled massively scoring goals last year - I just don't see these signings making huge differences - despite it being a decent haul in terms of quality, I don't think it is good enough to mount a sustained title challenge.

Seems to me like a window where we are wholly dependant on getting more out of what we have already, i.e. Martial, Mkhitaryan and Pogba...perhaps that's Mourinho's plan to buy complimentary players to let them play their natural games more but a big stretch to expect that kind of transformation.
 
I don't think we were that far away last season. Two major trophies. The league campaign was hindered by some draws due to poor finishing. Accounting for incremental improvement of our existing squad, which is very good, and a few additions. I would expect an excellent campaign this year. That said, I don't think we are title material yet. Next season I suspect. I agree that that one player of individual brilliance to really make this work. I suspect Griezmann next summer. This summer will be more practical.

I think Pogba will be a real goal threat in a 3 with Matic and Ander Herrera. Micky and Mata rotating on the right, Martial and Perisic on the left, and Morata and Rashford up front.

I partially expect one surprise signing.

the difference is, it is clear that goal scoring was the issue last season. Its a clear lack of goals. Much like when Arsenal used to leak goals and clearly needed CB's. the previous times we were changing managers/styles etc and just experimenting. it was evident that a lack of firepower was what separated us from the teams above last season
 
I would be happy. But then, I'd be not throwing a tantrum regardless so it's a moot point for me. More interested in how we improve as a team and what direction our football moves towards. Saying that though, I'll judge failure/success in hindsight so blaming/lauding the window will take place.
