It was sustained attacking with us pinning them back. Matic and Pogba were very good and a thoroughly enjoyable game to watch. Just hope we can get a good wide player to maximise our use of the brilliant Pogba and Matic.

I'm just happy that we kept our foot down and kept pouring forward even when the game was won. There are times when Jose tends to just close a game out when it's won but that was if he said to himself this is Manchester United and we need to win 4 or 5.

The handbrake was off today. Long may it continue.

The team looks more balanced now than anything these last 4 years. Almost every player on the pitch knew his role and how to do it pretty well. The team didn't panic when the first goal was delayed somewhat like last season, and they didn't also get drawn back after scoring to allow the equalizer. We looked like a very hungry team who wants to win and score and score and score more.

Add another winger to this team and we have a realistic chance to win the league if we succeed in keeping this balance through the season. Winning the league has always been about creating a balanced and running winning machine. If we succeed in that we can do it.

Without getting giddy, it just felt different. Chelsea last seaon was great, but it felt more like a performance with what we had to counter what we faced.

Today just felt, I dunno, fresh. It felt like we could open them up at will and to see it happen, it just filled me with a confidence I haven't felt in a while. It felt like a United side.
Totally. I actually have hope we can challenge this season and we were exciting to watch. Posted more today in the footie forums than I have in ages. Early days, but feels like we're back.

West Ham are awful but it was a satisfying performance.

We have shown many glimpses of the old days since SAF left, all were false dawns. We need to show some consistency now, and hopefully soon teams will fear coming to OT again.

We made them look awful.
At the end of the season, we shall see their final league position and we shall know just how good or bad they actually are.
For reference, last season, they finished 11th. So basically: mid-table team.

That amazing 4-0 versus Spurs under LVG was the most crushing. Followed it up with with the win at Anfield, securing top four, but then reverted to tumescent zombie football.

We had a spell under LVG that we were very good. I used to dread upcoming games when that period ended. Finally beginning to look forward to our next game.

I think it's the most exciting in years. Mata and Mikhitaryan were creative, Pogba and Matic owned the midfield, Valencia and Blind were strong out wide and Rashford and Lukaku were lethal. Plus the passing was as good as it's been since LVGs first season and forward players actually made runs.

According to Sky, it was our biggest league win in 3 years.

Even Moyes and LVG had strong performances in their day. It wasn't all rubbish. 5-0 Levurkusen, 4-0 QPR, 3-0 Spurs, LVG vs Liverpool in the League etc.

Last season we had plenty of commanding performances too. 4-1 against Leicester, 2-0 Chelsea at OT. There's nothing special about this performance that separates it from those. It's about the consistency and making sure we continue to play at such a high level.

Ditto. Some of those home draws last season were excruciating. Not that I'm getting carried away or anything:lol:
My fear is what will happen with a few injuries/suspensions/loss of form for the spine of the team. We have a long season with a lot of games, especially if we make progress in the Champions League.

Encouraging but one game and seeing the odd enthusiast crowning us Champions already in the newbie section, probably just pleased and happy with the result but most of us have seen what has happened since Sir Alex left, so I will hold popping the corks just yet.

Well I think it was. Most of you guys obviously mentioned City, Swansea, Liverpool games but I think in all of those games, the flow of the game allowed us to score those goals. They were not as dominating as today. It might be recency bias but today we were much more hungry and direct. We were attacking like piranhas. Of course it is still one game but it is so much fun to see United like this.

We had similar games against the likes of Stoke, Burnley and West Ham last year. Only difference was that we took our chances.

I would say: Yes. Most commanding performance for years. Of course the opponent was not City, but (a) it was the first match of the season, so we, the fans, have the feeling, that there will be even more to come, (b) I can remember good matches but hardly a match we dominated the full 90 minutes.

Ill get slaughtered probably but it's fecking West Ham. Commanding performance against them is what I bloody expect.

I'm delighted but let's hold on until we see how this goes.
Not unreasonable.

I do hope the "we're gonna win the league" posts are tongue in cheek, otherwise they're a little bit embarrassing.

It was a very good game, but you also need to take in consideration that it is the first game. It's hard for the opponent to analyze your 1st eleven, tactics and so on in the first few games. Reality will strike around mid october. But it was a very good game, with a few mistakes, but a commanding performance.

Everything falls in place when you have the right balance in the team, this is the first time we have that since 2014.

Jose was positive in his approach today. He played the game with a midfield of 2 and 4 attacking players. Last year we packed the midfield even against weaker teams.

Felt exactly like Southampton at home last season, that felt like a 'we're back performance' but alas another false dawn :(

Excellent performance.

We have been pretty poor for a few years now and it's been extremely rare that we won a game in a dominant manner.

Leicester last year I think was similar. But I get a different feel off this one, seems like something is clicking into place properly for the first time since 2013.
If you look at Danny Higganbottoms analysis (was on SkySports.com) of the difference between United with Zlatan up top as opposed to Lakaku you'll see why. He analyses the different parts of the pitch that become the areas that have space by having a striker who plays on defenders'shoulders and has pace. Specifically marked the space between Midfield and defence and the wings as areas where United would be most threatening. Was 100% right too.

Still say Leicester at home was the best under Jose so far.
This was better IMO. We played well at Leicester but wasn't it like 3 set peices in 25 minutes or something.

Its nice to celebrate such an impressive performance, but lets not get sucked into revisionism. We were at least as good, arguably better, a couple of times last season. The Chelsea game has already been mentioned, but our game at home to Watford sticks out to me as well, where we absolutely tore them to shreds, particularly in the first half.

We did (Watford), with a very similar set up to today.

It was a very good performance and we did what we were supposed to do against teams like West Ham, which was to dominate and win. The reason why we have not been challenging for the title in the last few years is because we failed to take care of teams like West Ham. I remember a 3 game period under LvG where we absolutely dominated teams and won all 3 of them, this felt like those games.

Brilliant performance and result, but this needs to be the expectation for us every week now again, big wins and exciting play.
