Just been their whole discography, once again. What a band, hardly a weak song anywhere.

Seen Marr live, will hopefully catch Morissey on the tour for his new album.

That's odd. My experience is most mancs aren't big on The Smiths and tend to prefer The Stone Roses and Oasis (sigh). Most Smiths fans I know are southerners.
An age thing I think. I turned 50 this year and tolerate Oasis and dont like the Roses. Everyone I know of my age who was there at the time at least likes The Smiths.

This should be the most active thread, like ever. Kids, these days pffffft!

That Marr Roackabilly riff all the way through Shakespeare's Sister gets me every time. In fact I'm gonna whack it on right now full blast and croon away.

The Smiths led me to The Cure which led me to see them in concert in Barcelona and began my love for the club. Thanks Morissey

Odds on the Smiths reforming some day?

Thing is, unlike a lot of other bands reforming and subsequently being shit live, Morissey still has the voice and Marr... Well Marr is Marr.

Also, the lack of love for "Stop me if you think you've heard this one before" is appalling. Might be my favourite from them. Until tomorrow. Maybe.

You'd have more chance plaiting piss than The Smiths reforming.
You're probably right... The Stone Roses reforming gave me some hope for some time, I was under the impression that Squire and Brown always had similar differences as Morrissey and Marr? The Made of Stone doc was excellent as well (even made Ian Brown sound good, which apparently didn't happen at the actual gigs)

That's the thing though, if the Smiths did ever reform, you know they'd smash it out of the park.

Did you coin that username purely for that post? Death, taxes and no reformed Smiths.

I'll concoct the biggest "I told you so" the day it happens.

Jokes aside, the hope that it might one day happen makes my life more bearable.

I used to know Johhny Marr before he was famous. He lived in Timperley and got the same bus as me when we went to Manchster for this TV show called 'Devil's Advocate' (not the Darkus Howe one). He started talking to me because I had a Psychedelic Furs T-shirt on.
I also knew Terry Christian from the same show.

Please tell me he wasn't a cnut. One of the things I try to hold on to in life is the fact that Johnny Marr is an all-round nice guy.

He was cool. We liked the same shit at the time. I seem to remember going to DeVilles with him a few times.

Well worth a watch, very funny in parts. The sunburst Les Paul 1960 that went from Townsend to Marr to Gallagher must be worth trillions.

I was going to make a new thread, but I'll bump this one instead.

Been listening to them loads over the last month or two, more than usual. Not sure I can pick an overall top five, but I'll try to pick my favourites at the moment (in no order)

Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before
Barbarism Begins at Home
I Want The One I Can't Have
Well I Wonder
Sweet and Tender Hooligan

Could probably do another one or two top fives though.

Met Andy Rourke in a bar in Manchester a few years ago and found myself slightly awestruck. All I could think to say was how much I loved the bass line in that tune. Took it well thankfully!

So, top 5 Smiths. I'll go with:

I Know It's Over
The Headmaster Ritual
Stop me...
The Queen is Dead
Still Ill

That song is one of the reasons I have a bass arriving tomorrow  Not sure I'll ever be able to play it, but I'll give it a shot!

I Know It's Over is great, that'd make my list on another day.

Maybe start with Well I Wonder (which seems easy enough) and go from there? You'll be going full-steam 80s funkathon in no time.

Most importantly, are you going to be a bass just below the chin kind of guy, or twanging way below the ball bag - a la Peter Hook?

Big, big call.

Yeah I'll start off simple to not overwhelm myself.

Definitely be going the Hooky route I imagine, I've always found the high up position to be a bit weird looking, and I can't imagine finding it very comfortable. Guess I wont know until I try though!

Agreed. Nobody should go down the Level 42 route.

Happy playing!

I'll try doing a top 5 when I'm back in the UK around Christmas.

Can't beat listening to the Smiths in some miserable british weather

Pretty difficult, they have so many tunes. In no particular order either:

Handsome Devil
Still Ill
Sweet and Tender Hooligan
What Difference Does it Make?
How Soon is Now

Paint a Vulgar Picture
Rusholme Ruffians
Cemetery Gates
Sweet and Tender Hooligan
Nowhere Fast

Or something like that, it changes so much but those five are always well up there.

How do you rank the four studio albums?:

Strangeways
Meat
Queen
S/T

Add Louder Than Bombs/Hatful/Rank if you wish but I prefer those four.

This is amusing but it still underlines how important to many The Smiths are:

Meeting is murder
Academics and fans gathered in Manchester this month to dissect the impact of the Smiths. Grace Dent hears tortured tales of dead dogs, bisexual love triangles and lonely youths ~

My favourite band of all time so my top 5 songs change hourly.

Stop Me if You Think You've Heard This One Before
Hand in Glove
William, it Was Really Nothing
These Things Take Time
Still Ill or What Difference Does It Make

Impossible to narrow it down though. There's just so many classics. How Soon Is Now, This Charming Man, Girl Afraid, London et al.

Do any of you from Manchester/NW England attend the Morrissey Smiths Disco on the first Friday of the month at the Star and Garter? I get to maybe three or four a year, always the one in February as I have an early birthday that month.

Five hours of Morrissey/Smiths stuff with the (very) occasional bit of respite isn't for everyone, but for fans it's a top night.

Best thing about Morrisey is that despite the demographic that idolises him he still comes out talking about his admiration for Nigel Farage and his happiness about Brexit. He gives no fecks.
