I hate it when we play like this, there's no explanation for being so poor and defending for our lives with 6 defenders against SH

Did Jose get himself purposely sent off to detract from that performance?

Not very good, but we would have drawn this for sure last season. Lukaku making the difference, and some good defending as well.

Hopefully this is a one-off and we play better next game.

This is how you win a league.
It's gonna get even uglier as tiredness creeps in with games coming thick and fast and that trip to Russia.

Very important psychologically holding a lead against determined home team.
Expect a good chunk of games for the next few weeks to be backs to the wall but Mourinho shines like Fergie in such a scenario. Support the lads.

Thank goodness the next league game is at home vs Palace, hopefully we will be able to rotate then. Boys looked shattered at the end there.

We all knew Mourinho was a bit of a coward during big matches but to do that against Southampton was funny to me :D Still 3 points so who cares.

When a win feels like a defeat.Eventually we will come unstuck if we don't improve.Happy with the 3 points but after Palace next weekend the games will get harder.I just hope Southampton play like that when the other big clubs visit them.

To be honest one of Lukaku or Herrera should have killed the game off.
The Lukaku chance was one i'd label a half chance. It'd take a really good shot to score, and most times the keeper would save.
Herrera's was unforgivable to not at least get on target from there!

I'm gonna say it over and over again, Mkhi doesn't deserve to be a starter. Couldn't keep the ball for more than few seconds in the 2nd half, anyway 3 points is what matters so its okay.
Agreed, its time to try Martial and Rashford off Lukaku to see how it works

First good team will maul us.

Jokes aside for all the Saints dominance they had what, 2 chances.

We grinded out the result, another clean sheet, onwards and upwards.

Defending is also an art. Brilliant display !
Good move to bring in smalling when we were struggling in defending airballs.

Should have killed thr game with Lukaku going for the goal instead of squaring and the obvious Herrera miss.

Southamptom away is not going to be easy for our rivals as well. Last year we dropped points here - Progress !!!

Important 3 points and I love that we have a manager who knows when it‘s better to shut down and get the points no matter how scrappy it might look at that moment.

And once more I can‘t believe that Mourinho gets sent off for peanuts while that jumping jack clown Klopp gets away with everything.

Mourinho being sent to the stands is even more ridiculous when you consider what Brick Top gets away with each and every fecking match.

Herrera was good when he came on and Fellaini did well the entire match. Midfield losign control seemed more like a tactical thing from the manager, because everyone stood off in the last 10 mins, let them have possession and defended passively.
Disagree with pretty much everything in that post. Mourinho clearly brought Herrera on to gain some control and he failed miserably. He then missed an absolute sitter just to top it off. Fellaini as usual contributed to us having no control which has been a recurring theme throughout his United career.

Got onto the pitch apparently.
Not too bad, thought he lost his temper and abused the 4th official again

I half think Mourinho played that negatively on purpose after the break. Almost as a test of his defence. Probably not, but it seemed that way. We'd 100% have conceded in that game last season.

For all the negative comments and id admit it wasnt a great performance but did De Gea have all that much to do? We seemed content to let them have the ball which made it look worse than it was. We cant hit 4 every week. I would have took that result and performance at Stoke.
We were anything but content in that 2nd half. In the first half we had an element of control, it was the complete opposite in the second. Still, Stoke and Southampton are always bastards on the road for us. We've gained 4 points from them. Happy with that.

Really good win on the back of a poor performance. Always take 3 points away from home.
Palace at home next week, hopefully we will be back in the goals.
Onwards and upwards - keep on winning.

When we signed Mourinho, I expected ALL our games to be 1-0, just like this one. I must say I have been pleasantly surprised that most games haven't turned like that. But it's always the mark of a good team to be able to squeak through these one nil games.

Yeah well he probably saw that basically everybody had a game off today, at least from the attack. Miki was appaling, Rashford was poor, Mata was poor, didn't like that Smalling change to be fair but at least we've got Martial fresh and running for the CL game so that's a positive. As you've said, it's a kind of a game we either draw or lose last season, it's a shitty but a win nonetheless.

That second half performance was piss poor. Nothing to do with expecting to beat every team 4-0. We were losing possession easily, and there was too much panicking at the back.
But, even with that, we could have a couple more goals if Herrera buries that chance and Lukkaku plays in Fellani instead of trying to beat 5 Southampton players by himself.

"Ventured on the pitch" according to Sky.
What you do is you tell him to step back in the technical zone. What a fecking twat  Sent off for entering the pitch? When Pochettino did that last season (engaging in shoving with the players), they did feck all.

To be honest on the Lukaku chance, I think Mkhitaryan played the wrong ball. Think Rashford had more space on the other side and better placed to do more damage.

Herrera should have at least forced Forster to make a top class save at the very least.

Terrible performance, honestly don't think we'll be close to the title. IMO the title race is between Chelsea and City. Those sorts of wins aren't going to be sustainable for the whole season. Against a team with more of a cutting edge those points are going to be dropped.

Pawson was doing his utmost today to feck us over so that petty send off was the most he could do in the end.

fecking prick.

Jose mentioned in his post match that he felt our attackers were not on their game today and were missing their attacking spark so he decided to protect the single goal instead by going defensive. I think it's pragmatic and sensible despite how we as fans always want attacks.

Second half was our low point of the season so far, but we hung in there and got the 3 points.

Nevertheless, it's frustrating to see a bang average team completely boss us for 45 minutes.

Young isn't a good defender, but neither Blind nor Darmian could've shaken his defender and put that cross in. I honestly think Young at LB is our best choice right now.

On to the next one.

OP's username is accurate.

Shouldn't even have been a contest, so one-sided was the first half. Waste chances like that, and... well, it could have been much worse. Fellaini saved two points with a header off the line, and De Gea made a few saves to prevent us losing all three.

Herrera's miss though is an example of what happens when players aren't kept match-sharp, not poor technique or laziness. Forwards have been rotated well, but if we're to rely on players further back to come in and do a job, they need minutes too - this goes doubly for new recruits like Lindelöf.

Only 2 goals conceded so far. I think that is why will definitely be in the running for the title this season.

Exactly. But we still kept a clean sheet away from home in a difficult venue.

It's these types of results that win the league. Smashing someone 4-0 at OT is great, but that's not the type of football you'd expect to sustain all year. Especially into the last months of the season.

We have finally evolved into a mourinho team in which we can grind out victories under difficult conditions. We might just be the best defence in the league which bodes well.

Hardly his fault.
Many of the forward players didn’t play well today. We were leading 1-0. It’s better to protect that lead than to go on searching for more goals and then got pegged back.

The officiating was horrendous. Jose must have sensed Pawson wasn’t going to give us any 50-50 decision. It’s better to be safe than sorry. We miss Pogba in that midfield. Lemina destroyed our midfield.....and the golden chance Herrera had at the death, he skied it.

We got the 3 points anyways!

Can cultists stop acting like the reason for those having a go at today`s performance have anything to do with 4:0 win demand every week. First half at least we played with purpose, having counter attacks going, Mkhi being black hole for them is another matter but second half i dont know what it was, football 100% it wasnt and that could a reason for some being unhappy, not a demand for 4:0 bullshit. Coward mode from last season was truly on.
