How ridiculous is it that England hasn't hosted a major tournament since 1996?!

Just dawned on me earlier that its over 20 years since Euro 96. Over 50 years since England hosted a World Cup.

Utterly bonkers given the history, facilities and infrastructure.

Do elaborate?
It's not that long a period of time, many of the recent bidding processes for hosting tournaments have been won through corruption (which England have partaken in but not to the same extent as others and less effectively) while the last time a tournament was staged here there were loads of empty seats at games, including one of the semi finals.

England need to sort out the hooligans before even thinking of hosting a major tournament. Until that mess is sorted it's only fair that the likes of Russia and Qatar get to deputise the hosting of world cups.

Spain haven't hosted anything since 1964, despite having a far better claim to major tournaments than England.

To think it's over 50 years since a world cup took place here though it's crazy. Many of the best players in the world play in the PL and England is the home of the sport.

Lot more time has passed since Italy or Spain hosted and England just had the Olympics which is kind of a major tournament in general.

The footballing world doesn't evolve around England as much as some English people would like to believe. It's been even longer since Spain hosted. Nor does it revolve around Europe for that matter.
Spain had a world cup in 82.

Look I get it. You're Irish and don't like England.

Agreed @TheReligion . Even crazier is that despotic states with little or no football history and infrastructure are hosting tournaments: Qatar and Russia

I wouldn’t call it ridiculous now tbf, but yeah it probably is time yous got a world cup considering the amount of top stadiums.

WC 2062 or 2066 seems nailed on. Marking 200 years of the FA. Think you guys will only host the Euros once until then.

That's a fair point, especially given that Germany, Italy, France and Spain have all hosted World Cups more recently then England would seem due one given the footballing culture and the infrastructure in place. However, there won't be a World Cup in Europe for a while and I wonder if the way the bid for 2018 went might put the FA off from trying again (not that the FA don't love a good PR disaster).

Since 1966 there have been 6 WCs in Europe. Germany twice (West Germany in 1970), Italy, Spain, France and Russia once. So it has pretty much gone round the biggest countries in the continent. England will either get the next one in Europe or the one after that.

I'm guessing 2030 will go to Argentina/Uruguay to celebrate the 100 year anniversary and 2034 will go to England.

UK recently hosted an Olympics and Rugby world Cup if I'm not mistaken. At least The UK remains relevant in the sporting world.

I’m disappointed you havnt had it, it’d only be a short trip over the bridge for me. I’d love for Britain to get caught up in a World Cup tournament, however it would be hard to stomach if Wales and the other home nations didn’t qualify for it with it more than likely dominating the tv and papers for the month.

People mentioning Spain 82 and Italy 90 being the same or longer than when England hosted it I don’t agree with. That’s hell of a difference to 66.
I don’t think we should be counting the euros here to be honest, it’s a different kettle of fish

I was so disappointed watching the draw for the 18 and 22 world cups and seeing where they were knowing straight away they wouldn’t be countries I’d want to take my son or even travel with friends to get involved in the whole occasion.

What I think would be cool is if the UK and ROI joint hosted a major international tournament together.

You’ve got the major PL stadia, Wembley, Aviva, Celtic Park, Ibrox, etc.
That would be cool but even with the expanded tournaments it'd be a bit much to have 5 hosts. Unless they aren't given spots in which case I'd kind of feel like what is the point. Or the north can feck off, maybe Wales too?

Well, you’ve got 12 venues for the next Euro.

Wales could definitely be included with Millennium Stadium.

Your just better off hosting it purely in England. Better infrastructure, better stadia and a richer footballing history than the other 4 combined.

I always understood it as being due to political reasons within football.

FIFA has always had a problem with the power within the game of Britain as a ‘commonwealth’ (not THE Commonwealth). It is a unique situation in that one State, has four separate footballing countries (and therefore, four votes within FIFA).

It’s also, one of the (admittedly, myriad) reasons, why Britain has never sought to have a national side, representative of the state, university unless in ‘one-off’ situations, such as the 2012 olympics.

I could well be incorrect on this, it isn’t something I’ve done a good deal of research on, though I remember reading about it from different, serious sources, throughout the years. It also appears to be the exact type of petty squabble that FIFA, and the Home associations seem to relish.

I meant giving the host nation automatic qualification. They can't give 5 automatic spots and I feel like what's the point of say Ireland co-hosting a tournament we then don't qualify for. So any joint bid would have to be widdled down to 2-3 hosts. In which case England would likely lose out or Ireland.

Next European World Cup will be one of them expansion ones. My bet's on them sticking it in Scandanavia.

Ahhhh gotcha. Yeah that could cause complications.

Are they making an exemption for this Euros then since it’s a 1 off event?

2034 is nailed on for China if they don’t break the rules and get it sooner. Xi wants a WC, FIFA wants China to have a WC, 2034 is technically the 1st one they can host...
