I must have missed the latter half of the season where he played as a striker for West ham and did a great job in that position.
Playing as striker for an awful team doesn't really mean he is a proper striker. He is a forward, an attacking player, one that likes to have the ball in his feet and go past blocks, he is not a striker-striker. If he was such a thing, why didn't he play there for Stoke? Arnautovic is bang average and it's embarrassing to even be linked with him. We need players like Griezmann, Icardi, Isco, Thiago et al to compete - not fecking Arnautovic.

Not an exciting prospect, certainly will not help close the gap between us and City.

Then he would make a great backup option. He is flexible across the front line and has showed that he can perform well in the striker role. At stoke, he had some good performance, but it was not as good as west ham perhaps due to the the different managerial philosophies; which can affect players performance.

I still refuse to believe anyone at the club actually entertaining such idea, I’ll hold off from further comments.
We deserve mediocrity if we sign shit like this.

There's as twitter account called ex westham employee or something saying that there has been no enquiry let alone bid for Arnautovic so far but Jose being at that match more or less confirms our interest.
I think in the end if we refused to pay the money for Perisic I don't see us paying the amount they will ask for Arnautovic.

BTW he's a really good player who's being underrated on here. He's not mediocre by any stretch of imagination.

Tbf if we're signing a player to primarily be backup then what level of quality are you guys actually expecting?

Why the hell are we signing a backup to a player that should already be the backup? Strive for greatness to beat Real Madrid, Barcelona, City, Juventus and PSG - you do not play Lukaku and beat them, you certainly do not buy Arnautovic and expect anything to happen.

Funniest thing is for me, after the WHU game at the end of the season,my mate jokingly said "'cking hell, your lot will be bidding for Arnautovic in the summer no doubt, a cool £85m....."

He's laughing his box off right now. Would be a mental, ridiculous signing.

This is a smoke screen for someone else, I guarantee it. Its the only thing that makes sense about this.
The beloved smokescreen. As hardy a perennial on the Cafe as 'we'll make that back in shirt sales in six months!' No matter how many times both weeds are dug up and burnt they keep coming back!

I don't get where people are acting like he's been some high end player for years, he's been an inconsistent, mid table player and suddenly hit his best patch of form as a striker for a relagation battling side for half a season, at 29. As a £20M back-striker? Eh, I guess, but when you start crossing £30M and up he'll be starting on the RW week in and week out and he's not nearly good enough for that.

Arnautovic and Mourinho have a history.

Look at the ending of this video where he mentions West ham signing Arnautovic (among others) and 'trying to win the PL'.

We are definitely in for him. No doubt in my mind. The price is a different story.

I agree with that. Even if he were to throw a tantrum and demand to leave (he's not got more than one good move left in his career) given the popularity of the West Ham board, they can't be shown to be weak on this. Demanding 50m kills any chance of a deal. Unless there's a sweetener with a player going there on loan for a season + cash.

Maybe Martial for Arnautovic swap deal?

That was while mentioning Chicharito :D

Any other player from Austria (or Russia) he could be watching? Maybe this rumour started when journalists came to know that Jose had arrived to watch the game?
Well let’s hope so but I can’t think of anyone of note who plays for Russia or Austria?

Only Alaba.

Are we out of options? Or we dont want spend big? Or Jose really rates him I wonder!
Arnautovic won't exactly be cheap. West Ham signed him for £25M so would be looking for £35M+ (some outlets saying it could be as much as £50M).

whether he's seriously on Uniteds radar or not (I highly doubt it) - I can't help but admire how far he's come. He used to be one of the most infuriating players I've ever seen, and it seemed he'd never make anything of his potential. The move to England was brilliant for his development, he seemed to settle down there off the field too (in contrast to his Bremen days, where he'd regularly make negative headlines). Plus Marcel Koller was really good for him in the national team. The young Arnautovic was a frustrating showboat ... him making defensive contributions and working for the team would have been unthinkable just a few years back. Happy with how he's developed and hope he gets a bigger move than West Ham.

Mediocre back-up shouldn’t cost you 40-50m with no resale value.
This. I do think as a backup striker and possibly winger he would be a decent addition but not at the prices being put out there at the moment. At 15-20mil, sure. But 40-50mil is insane even by today's crazy market standards.

Kinda like Sabitzer, but he's injured.

The idea that we would sign someone to start ahead of Lukaku is an absolute fantasy though. It's absolutely clear from this season that Lukaku will remain our first choice striker. Mourinho loves him. So why hold our summer signings to a version of reality that doesn't exist? Few signings make sense on those terms.

Agree, for that price it's insane. In terms of the profile of player though it makes sense.

People have said we need another striker. Well, any striker we sign will need to a) be happy to spend a lot of time on the bench and/or b) be able to play in other positions. Arnautovic fills the bill on both counts and, given no actual top class player would settle for a relatively limited role, is about the level of player I'd expect to be willing to join us on those terms.

For 25m-ish it would make sense to me. Not for double that though.

You could sign Pavon or Lautaro Martinez with part of that money and they probably could be starters in the end:lol:

Absolute joke if we go for this guy, reminds me of Fergie signing Young to catch up to Barcelona, in no way will this signing improve the squad whatsoever apart from getting in a "puts in a shift Mourinho style" player. Awful.
