Are you optimistic about the new season?

I think Jose really has to cheer up this season.

He makes it worse for himself by being so fecking miserable all the time. I'm not asking for Klopp style manic laughing or smiling, just stop acting like you hate being at the club.

I don’t see much room for optimism as it stands. I still feel the club lacks a coherent and long term transfer policy and that we don’t have the right players for Mourinho to get us near competing with City (or right manager to get best out of current group of players).

Feels like we are still compensating for lack of quality with quantity and making do with players we know aren’t good enough.

City have raised the bar, similar to Mourinho’s first spell at Chelsea and catching them will take time rather than quick fixes but the manager and the club dont have any patience and will probably throw money and hope for best in the short term.

All I can say is I’m glad that I’m going travelling from October for a full year as I think it’s going to be a toxic season at United.

I mean struggle for top 4 type season.

Why?
Jose proved last season he has no idea how to maximise our wealth of attacking talent. That's not gonna change. We've added Fred, that's it.

Nothing whatsoever to be optimistic about. The last time I felt this pessimistic was the Moyes season, but even then there was a 'what if' element until just before Xmas.

Good for you man.
I'm off in March as well, for 3-4months. My enthusiasm for the season will be dead by Xmas anyway I'd imagine once it becomes obvious we're miles away yet again.

Feck all to be optimistic about at the moment. I honestly believe we will be in a fight for 3rd/4th place. That FA cup final completely crushed any hopes I had about winning any major trophy under Mourinho. In far to many games did we look absolutely lost on the pitch, Burnley home we were actually 0-2 down, Newcastle away made me sick, losing to a relegated WBA at home was an absolute embarrassment and getting knocked out by Sevilla in CL and the fact that we actually were 0-2 down at Old Trafford made me want to quit watching football at all.
Fecking hell with the talent we have in our squad and with a manager who has won literally everything there is to win there is no excuse for us to show up in some games looking like Stoke.

My honest opinion is that Mourinho has completely lost it, his comments after we were knocked out by Sevilla was a spit in the face of us life long supporters, not to mention he has started a negative pattern of constantly criticising players in public as soon as something goes wrong. The Mourinho of old would never do that, in fact he did everything he could to protect the players and deflect any sort of attention on them to himself. If he keeps acting the same way this season, and if our tactics are the same then I expect this to be his last season with us because lets face it we all know how stubborn he is and expecting any changes from him both tactically and personality wise would be incredibly naive.

I really do love the club but honestly I feel I need a break from united. Feel like the Last few years of football have aged me 10 years. I’ll check the results but as for watching them goes there’s next to no chance I’ll be bothered.

Looking forward to it. It’ll be like going on holiday with a miserable cnut though. The first sign of trouble will be met with blaming others.

Not sure if I'm optimistic or pessimistic but we need to see a genuine title challenge this year or Mourinho has to go for me.

Really wouldn’t know how to do this, even when Van Gaals awful bloody football had drained literally every last drop of enthusiasm I had, I still had to watch every game I could, albeit behind the heavy fog of alcohol.

At the chance of sounding like a complete childish transfer muppet I think we need a couple of really good exiting signings to get my juices flowing but I’m sure once the opener kicks off I’ll be back screaming at the tele and stressing about this utter bollocks we love called Manchester United.

Feel like next season is a countdown to Mourinho being sacked before some other poor sod has to try to make a team out of various veterans, misfits and mercenaries.

The only challenger I can see to City next year is Liverpool, & that thought really depresses me.

After we drop 120mil on Bale, we have Fred, get rid of some deadwood and with the positive attacking football that Mourinho is world famous for, we should do all right.

I know how you feel, Mourinho makes it impossible to have any enthusiasm, I don't care about the lack of transfers, it just feels like scratching off the days on a prison cell wall until he goes.

We are in to challenge for the top spot for sure. I am excited. I do hope we see more exciting attacking soccer as compared to last year with the team more familiar with each other's style of play.

I’m signing off for a bit. Will pick it up in a few weeks and see if we’ve bothered signing anyone meaningful. We have some major deficiencies right now, and if those aren’t addressed, we’ll do feck all next season.

I am a bit worried that our summer business is shaping up a bit like the time we signed Schewinsteiger and Schneirderlen. Reading in this month's UWS that the word is that Fred is good but not great suggest there is still work to be done.

Not massively optimistic, there are so many question marks over our players and our manager at the moment.

What's going on with martial? Will Sanchez play to his actual level? Will pogba play like he can for France? Will Rashford get a chance? Will Shaw be able to step up and claim a place?

There are actually loads more as well, everything is so uncertain and clearly have holes in the squad and plenty of players who are surplus to requirements as well.

How would everyone feel if we signed Sandro, Bale and Alderwiereld in the next few weeks? Not sure that is going to happen but I think that would get me excited!

A optimism thread with a lot of pessimism. Always excited and optimism for our new season. Rom and Pogba on form, fresh Sanchez and Martial should be a good start to our season

Currently, no. I'll feel better about it if we sign Bale or another right winger.
What I don't understand is why Mourinho is not being active on the transfer market for a CB and a RW. It's his own comments (especially after Sevilla) that make it obvious that the team wasn't good enough. And how will it become better if we only sign Fred and Dalot? Neither of the players can get me excited in terms of changing our playstyle dramatically.
And even if we do sign Bale(which I think is not being considered at all), I won't get too excited because I know that he won't play more than 40-50% of the matches throughout the season.

I'm not a believer of signing lots of players every transfer window. If people are lacking optimism, because we've only added a few players, need to remember that we've had transfer windows where we've signed 4 or 5 players and everyone getting excited, only to find the players don't adapt straight away and many of them end up as disappointments.

I'd much rather take the approach that we managed 2nd without ever hitting top form with this group of players. So with changes to the coaching setup, and hopefully more to come from a relatively young side who are gaining valuable experience, maybe we might just surprise a lot of people this season. Still think its possible we may add one big name signing but I feel we will have a good season. Fans are desperate for a title challenge but we may have to wait another year or two before we are ready for that, given the strength of the City squad, but a battle for 2nd and hopefully success in one of the cups would do for me.

Our recruitment hasn't been good enough so far this window for me to go from worried to optimistic. There's still time obviously but if the season were to start tomorrow I wouldn't be looking forward to it.

The transfer window is still open so if we bring in the right players, then I would be a bit optimistic, but at present, NO.

Great post. Depressing when you list all those brutal games last season. Agree on the José melt down, I'm thinking he could go around Christmas time. Thereafter he'll throw the resentment he seems to carry for Utd at everyone at the club - the players, the fans, the board - after all, it's NEVER José's fault.

The market at this moment is locked by the world cup. I have expectations to fight and win the EPL and be protagonists in the UCL. As I have read in other comments, it is true, we need an RW and I would say that an LB as well. There is talk of the departure of Darmian to Inter, we could go in search of an LB. Last season we suffered a lot in defense, and we should think about compensating for that, more than in the attack, where we have everything almost won, except for a natural replacement for Lukaku.

This! This was supposed to be his perfect match. Instead he lives in a hotel, distances himself from poor performances and looks like life has just thrown him a bunch of body blows. I think Chelsea will be always his club in some players minds particularly in terms of how those players thought of him like lamps and terry and co. He didn’t throw them boys under the bus. I love Jose but perhaps strangely I love him for those days!

We need him getting our squad playing better and more like a Jose team. More players not playing at the level won’t make much difference. Agreed we need afew player upgrades but it’s secondary to getting them playing like they care against the bottom 6 in particular. In fairness I think our players lost focus when the league went.

We saw some tumescent football with giggs and co in midfield for the last 3/4 seasons with fergie only we won. Think that’s all that’s really killing us now

Optimistic? Hmm.. I think it will be a season like last year. I think the style of play will be a little better. I think we still end up 2nd or 3rd. I doubt we'll get a decent trophy. I don't expect to go a long way in the CL, unless lucky draws.

I don't like Mourinho and he makes it hard to be optimistic. I do think he will not do a lot worse or a lot better than 2nd place. That's worth something.

I am very optimistic about the season ahead.

I think that a lot of players who under-performed last season will put in the work this year. I also think some of our younger players will surprise people with their development.

We know where we went wrong last season, didn't kill off the lesser sides and let feeling sorry for ourselves destroy our Xmas and New Year period. We can fix those things. Jose has made moves to fix those things with the way he's shaken up his coaching staff.

I see plenty of reasons to feel things will be better this season than last.

He needs to get more out of the players he actually has and has already spent a fortune on. Lukaku, Sanchez, Pogba , Lindolof & Bailly. I can’t help but think there is so much more from these guys that if he coaches them right we benefit hugely from.
That’s even before moving onto our young players that I want to see develop and become confident like Martial & Rashford. He has to do a better coaching job this season too many players playing below their level for it to be a coincidence. It’s a tactical or motivational issue we have currently. Although I feel we need certain positions addressed. New signings won’t fix this issue we have. Jose has to address these this summer.

It all comes about how our team will click from the start, we have a very decent team, just see how they fared for the world cup.
