Players missing for the start of the season?

With Lukaku, Lingard, Pogba, Fellaini, Rashford, Young, Lindelof and Jones all reaching the quarter final stage of the world cup, will they not be missing for the opening game of the season? That's basically the spine of the team. At least Leicester will be without Vardy and Maguire.

City will have a problem with their opening game at the Emirates I guess.

Rashford too. Think we'll start the season with Martial up top, Sanchez on the left and Mata on the right.

Added him to OP. Do you know if it's usually just the one game? Could be a tricky start.

Assuming we make no further signings, we’ll have

De Gea
Valencia - Smalling - Bailly - Shaw
Herrera - Matic - Fred
Mata - Martial - Sanchez
That’s a pretty decent team to be honest.

Not to mention Young...

Unless we make signings, team will probably be:

De Gea

Valencia Bailly Smalling Shaw
Matic
Fred Herrera
Mata Martial Sanchez

Subs: Romero/Grant, Rojo/Lindelof, Dalot, McTominay, Andreas and Chong, Gomes? :nervous:
We'll have a big problem in terms of attacking subs.

I don’t think any of our players will be missing, as in out of the squad) for the first game. It’s most likely all the World Cup players you mentioned will get at least some minutes against Bayern Munich.

They might not be at full fitness and sharpness, but they’ll be in the squad and (fairly close to being) ready to go.

We’ll probably start with something like:
Ddg
Valencia, Smalling, Bailly, Shaw,
Matic, Fred, Herrera,
(New signing?), Alexis, Martial

We’ll bring on Lukaku, Pogba, and Lingard as subs or something like that.

I forgot Lindelof also reached the quarter finals.

No idea how long the breaks are but I looked back to the 2014 World Cup and Blind made it to the third place play-off on the 12th July and managed to be on the bench for Ajax on the 10th August so most if not all of them should be back for the second game at least if not the first.

What do you mean ? EPL starts 11 Aug
Players who made it to the end of the World Cup still need a few weeks break then they have to start training again so unlikely to be put straight back into the lineup over players who have had games over the pre-season. Like Waq said, they'll probably be on the bench for the first game then starting from second game onwards.

Bit worrying not due to the players missing the first game, but due to the fact they won't have any preseason. We got off to a flyer last year and I feel like a lot of that was down to our intense preseason that got our players up to speed much quicker than a lot of others.

They’ll probably come back to the club and the physio’s will assess each individual.

Depending on the player and their condition, they’ll get given some time off. If I recall in the past it’s not always the same. There’s been times where people haven’t had time off, some a week, some a couple of weeks.

Think it very much depends on the player.

No doubt we shall have some of our other players starting some of the early games in the season.

Welcome to Manchester reception committee
They'll all get a minimum of three weeks holiday. It's a standard FA/PFA requirement. Historically Mourinho, like a lot of managers, has given his players at least four, so I don't see him trying to get them back early.

What happens after that probably depends what condition they're in. Jones hasn't played much, but has trained, so he might need something different to Pogba who'll play every minute. Young's older than the others so he's probably different again, and so on.

They should all be in the squad for the first game. It will be pre season they miss out on but then the fitness drop over summer won't be as great, as they were all playing when the others were sitting on a beach.

I'm actually really looking forward to see how we line up and how we perform, while most of our starters are taking a break.
Pereira, Martial, McTomminay, Fred, Shaw are all players I want to see get minutes. Some of these guys have a lot to prove and should seize that opportunity. Although that's been the narrative of the last 2 pre seasons.

Think we may also have some back for the beginning and then look at giving them further break later on. Like during a Cup week or something. I’m sure this has been done in the past.

I remember Arsenal bringing their stars back late two years ago and starting terribly as a result as Arsene insisted on giving them the beginning of the season off.

Shaw has a really good opportunity here, which is why I was slightly disappointed to see his holiday pictures. I know it looks as if he's already back in shape, but it's more of a mentality issue for me.

Compare that to Sanchez, who didn't have the best of starts, all he seemed to be doing in the summer was fitness work. He seems much more determined to do well this season.

We'll sign Bale and will line up on opening day with:

------------------De Gea------------------
Valencia----Smalling----Bailly-----Shaw
----------Fred----Matic----Herrera-------
Bale-------------Martial----------Sanchez

When everyone is back and fit:

------------------De Gea------------------
Valencia----Bailly----Maguire-----Shaw
----------Fred----Matic----Pogba---------
Bale------------Lukaku----------Sanchez

It's 4 weeks today the first game of the season, assume the WC players will get 2 weeks off following their countries exit, not unreasonable to imagine they'll all be back for the first game

A fair few of their countries have not exited yet though. And they will certainly get more than 2 weeks off. Imagine getting 2 weeks off in a year!

Why would they be missing? They don't need a pre season training camp as they have just played a world cup!

They had time off before the tournament didn't they?

Don’t know what the arrangement was, but I don’t think so. They had to play various warm up matches with their countries. The CL final was 26 May and the WC kicked off 16 June. About 3 weeks between season ending and WC. At least 3 warm up games each I think.

Surely they need more than 2 weeks off. Jesus what’s the point in earning all that cash if you can’t even have longer holidays than Jean and Bernard from Grimsby!

Four weeks from the World Cup final is the 12th August. Season starts on the 10th. Our second game is on the 19th so sounds about right that they'd definitely be back for then.

The minimum break is noted somewhere? So it can be linked to and threadmarked maybe.

Why would they miss the start of the season? When has that ever happened after one of our players went far in the World Cup? They will miss pre season but are usually back in time for the league games.

3-4 weeks break for anyone returning from WC/Euro. It didn't concern much in the past because a) England always go home by QF b) Most of our players were not selected for WC/Euro.

I believe Demetri Mitchell will shine in preseason and start ahead of Shaw. When given first team opportunities, Mitchell has exceeded expectations. I think that will continue.

Jose confirmed today on his analysis for Russia Today that he will give all his players who reached the semi-finals a break of three weeks which he considers the minimum they need physically and mentally. So they will only return less than one week before the Premier League starts which means they will not be ready for the first match.
