If we don't make changes then we're in trouble. We have so much dross in our squad it's unreal and our rivals are either miles ahead (City) or strengthening significantly (Liverpool).

If anyone thinks we're going to challenge next year without multiple quality players being brought in then they're delusional. This summer is huge for us.

We need a new winger, as relying on Martial and Sanchez to up their game next season is just a recipe for disaster. The same goes for our left back and CB options. Having players that are "good enough" isn't going to cut it. You look at teams like City, Real, Barca just filling their squad and it's depressing to see us saying that what we've got is "good enough". Those teams have more talent than the number of sweaty sailors who use Cina's mum like a train on any given Friday night.

We still follow the model of zero competition for our positions in terms of top tier players, which worked under Sir Alex because those players who felt they were safe wouldn't dare sit on their lazy arses and do the bare minimum. We now have players who are like that useless fud at your work who does bigger all but keeps saying, in our case to the press, about how things are going to be different from now on because they've been warned by senior management a third time for nicking printer paper and clogging the office broadband with Netflix streaming.

Panic already?
Ok let's break it down .

Signed :
Fred - could be a midfielder we need to utilise What we already have E.g. Pogba matic Herrera Etc.
Dalot - highly Rated young Fullback

Released
Blind - I liked him but doesnt fit so good luck to him
Possibly Darmian in the next few days also good luck to him just not what we need .

The world cup finished a couple of days ago so no team has done all that much .. Madrid , barca , bayern Etc.

Coutois looks on his way to Real so David is staying . Lovely
Martial is still around
And Rashford also .

One or two more and we look good IMO . Before anyone jumps down my throat football is fine lines we aren't that far away . City have signed about 50 defenders at this stage . Trust and Believe . Its early yet

I'm worried about the attack. Still very poor. The full backs we have talent in Shaw and Dalot, it'll be down to Jose to get them playing well.

But none of our forwards bar Lukaku are top tier. Alexis maybe 3 seasons ago but huge question marks now.
The attack has been poor for ages now. Mata, Lingard, Rashford, Sanchez isn't a strike force which really gets you off the edge of your seat .Sure they could be managed better but they're still limited. Martial has the biggest potential but that's all it is right now .Just potential that is waiting to be unlocked. Lukaku is quality no doubt but even he would struggle to get into most top European squads, would probably be on the bench but he's our best attacker nonetheless. Our standards have dropped masivelly. When was the last time we had a truly top tier attack? We don't score enough goals and haven't since the SAF era. Mainly due to absence of true wingers. We always had wide men who would stay wide, commit defenders, whip in balls and also contribute with goals. Also our main strikers haven't produced enough. Lukaku only got 16 in PL. Well short of what you need your main striker to be scoring if you want a title challenge. Ibrahimovic got 17. Before those two it was even worse. Relying on Martial and Rashford and going even further Falcao but he obviously wasn't fit so Rooney played and he was past it. WIth SAF the team had many different ways of scoring and we were very unpredictable

I have mixed feelings to this thread.

My general consensus of our current team, we currently lack balance. Our right wing looks a bit weak. Our centre backs are decent, but not world class.

Those two are probably the focal areas.

RB I think Dalot has enough about him from what Mourinho is saying to be pushing for games and starts. Valencia isn't finished yet.

LB I still hope Shaw can make one last push. Young is a good worker. Left is less of a concern because we have an excess of talent on the left wing so it covers some of the lack of quality.

Midfield we have enough in the way of options and quality, assuming Fred becomes the Pogba/ wingers enabler

In terms of solutions, I'm not convinced we can realistically afford the jump in quality to compete with City/ Real/ Barcelona/ PSG. That might require a world class RW, RB and LB and at least one CB and maybe even a cover or alternative top draw striker for competition/ change of formations.

Doing half of this is barely worth it, unless right price and right age.

The alternative is we have players like Lingard to fit in as a probable regular right sided forward, or try more of our LWs there to hope one sticks. Sanchez, Martial and Rashford are all relatively fresh in terms of games this summer. One of them needs to swap wings and make it work in the pre season games. Ronaldo and Nani managed it and if these three can't they need to go for someone who can.

CBs we are well stocked. Lindelof is steadily improving, was good for Sweden. Bailey is class. Smalling is mostly reliable. Rojo is a very good cover and should be better for more time to put his injury behind him. Jones needs to go.

I can see exactly why we need to shift players out. Our squad is still bloated. We def would need a CB out to bring one in. We arguably would need either one of the LW or Mata our for the RW spot to be filled.

Shaw is literally at last chance saloon. His contract ends this season and I think it's literally now or never. I can't see how we can buy without getting rid of him.

Similarly on RB I think Dalot is Valencias replacement long term so a plan is there and no real need for another.

Bottom line is I can see a clear plan/ strategy to fix our team, but its easier said than done.

Sanchez was a great opportunity for an exceptional world class talent. To say he is done is stupid. Yes he hasn't performed yet, but that needs to be worked on. He is only 29, he is in incredible shape. No reason for him to not be a star for many years to come.

The other part of Sanchez is it solved one of our squad issues. Mhki wasn't working, so better to add a world class talent and remove some excess. Bottom line if Martial or Rashford can't force a way in or adapt they are not good enough. I'd rather this than Mhki bench warming even if its disruptive to begin with.

Bottom line. We need more out than in. Otherwise we risk an even more bloated and unsettled squad.

There is still time. Blind has gone. Darmian is being worked on. Would be nice to hear more going like Jones and Mata.

Replacing Jones with a top CB and Mata with a top RW would make a world of difference alone. Darmian out should probably just make space for youngsters.

Remember also we have a ton of quality young players who need to be given chances or at least getting solid loan moves.

Without more signings we will struggle to maintain a top 4 place. We have (so far) been underwhelming with our transfers in. Lets hope we get at least a proper RW in, or a left footed forward with some pace and trickery, who can cross a ball and score a few.

Finishing 2nd is not mediocre. MUFC not challenging for the EPL or UCL title 6 seasons in a row definitely is.
Yh but I can't tell if you are putting that on mourinho? Even in wider context it doesn't mean much. He wasn't in charge for some of those seasons and in that time our transfer strategies and recruitment have been disastrous. No one LVG signed apart from Martial would get near our first 11 at the moment. Also you should look at how we did in the 70's and 80's. Won basically nothing. We played in the second tier at one point. We didn't always challenge for the UCL under Ferguson and the league has changed now we can't use our global fan base to dominate financially because of FFP and TV money for other premier league sides. We aren't guaranteed to be in a 2 horse race with arsenal every season like we we were between 1989 to 2004. I think we need players but I think too many fans here are gagging for us to sign anybody just for the sake of it. There's no point in us buying mediocre players just because a transfer window is open, we are full of them. If FFP allowed, don't you think we would go and buy Mbappe, bale, alderweireld, Sandro and Savic for about 700m pounds? Course we would. But be realistic. We can only buy what's available, will improve the squad and fits the FFP requirements and at the moment that's hard.

Lol so okay if we could go out and spend any money we felt like we just wouldn't sign anybody? Have you been in a coma for the last 5 years?
Of course but your living in cloud cuckoo land if you think the glazers would spend 700 million on a transfer window signing all those players, thats even if they would come. Bales already turned us down dont know how many times. Mbappe will go to Madrid and I havent a fecking clue who alder writers is. Do you mean alderweirald?

We already had a worse attack than City and Liverpool and they've added Mahrez and Shaqiri to what they had.

City have six attacking midfielders better than Lingard (Silva, De Bruyne, Sane, Sterling, Mahrez, B.Silva) and some on here are happy with him being first choice for us. It's madness.

Obviously. I'm more referencing us splashing cash than assembling a dream team. You're here bemoaning lack of transfers (spending) then saying the glazers won't spend money. What's your point?

One thing that strikes me is that Mourinho hasn't exactly been vocal about adding to the squad whereas last summer he was. The window is about 3 weeks shorter this summer too. Last summer he would say he's in for a midfielder or a striker but there's been no such noise this summer.

I'm not panicking as I do think we'll get one more signing in but that's about it. I think the real areas where we need to strengthen (right winger and left-back) I don't think the club is seeing great value this summer and that includes Sandro whom I don't think we have made a serious approach (perhaps because they feel he's staying at Juve or joining PSG). Jose also said in January he's happy with his attackers and wouldn't add to that in the summer. I doubt he's been knee jerk on that and trusts that Sanchez is integrated into the team and after a summer off will be the player we all know he is.

All a bit difficult though. Who do we sign? A load of mediocre players that replace mediocre players we already have and then we don't move forward and it's the managers fault for signing mediocre players when the window was open to appease a couple of fans? Idiots writing how we need to sign Perisic and Mandzukic as if that will close the 20 points to city and get us in the UCL final? Quite hard to draw up lists of players who fit FFP requirements, want to join, would fill the position we need and aren't either prospects, or over the hill, or who will cost a silly amount of money for someone who has a small amount of time left at their peak (e.g. The quoting of Willian at 60m). I think that's why it's slow. I do think we will sign more players though, I'm just waiting for it instead of acting like the transfer window has already ended with just Dalot and Fred coming in.

We make things much harder for ourselves when we ignore obvious players... Also it's harder because we've collected so many squad options that we need to make space in the squad before we buy. Look at our left backs: Young, Shaw and Darmian. Keep Young as a squad option as he and Dalot can cover both sides, sell Shaw and Darmian and bring in a proper quality left back like Alex Sandro because they are obviously willing to negotiate for that. Or get Tierney if we want to start with Young and have the younger long term quality option. Instead, we keep hearing the same shite about fecking Shaw every summer before his inevitable injury. We spent 30m on a center back last summer who is no better then any of 4 centerbacks we already had basically. He's basically at the same level as Jones, Smalling, Rojo or Bailly, all who have their benefits but none of who are reliable enough yet to build a defence around. Get rid of trash like Rojo or players who are forever injured like Jones, and bring in a quality all round defender. Milan offering Bonucci for 30m. People can have their concerns about adapting to the prem, but at that price he's a steal especially when you compare him to any of our current defenders when it comes to his on the ball ability, his intelligence, his experience, etc.
Stop hoarding players on high wages who never really fitted in like Mata, bring in a proper right sided attacker so we don't have every single attack go through our left wing every single time. Juventus signed Douglas Costa for 35m. He would've been absolutely perfect for us. City signed Mahrez for 60m. Another who would've been perfect.

People always come out with the "but who do we sign?" shite every summer when we look like we're failing in the window. I remember the same shite came out when people asked what midfielders can we sign as an excuse for us not signing any midfielders for so long, ignoring that Modric was at Spurs for a bit with constant rumors and eventually left for Madrid. There's always options available, always has been. You just have to go out and get them.

We are doing ok with the sigings we have made so far. Its a world cup year things will get moving faster now that the cup is over. All of the rumours make it apear as if clubs are wheeling and dealing and signing players left and right. That is just not the case.

I agree we have a lot of squad options mainly from three seasons of poor recruitment by two previous managers.
I agree with a lot of the players you slated however the Modric thing is years ago?
And also in regards players how your manager plays tactically governs who you sign. For example if you play a flat back 4 there's no point signing wing backs. No point signing a big hold the ball up centre forward if you play over the top regardless of ability and price etc.
But I still think the majority of what is out there and available currently is mediocre. Wasn't the case in previous seasons but seems so this summer. For instance I genuinely think if Sandro was available and we wanted him we'd have signed him by now, which leads me to believe it's either just paper talk, juve won't sell or we don't really want him for some reason. We'll find some players

It didn’t go worse. Berbatov had already made Tevez redundant. The quality of the playing squad going worse is hyperbolic at best. United did not finish lower than 2nd from Ronaldo’s departure to SAF/Gill’s departure. We always competed. We lost the league on goals difference(2012) & Drogba’s offside goal at OT(2010).

You won’t go into Herrera’s stuff cos you would lose the debate. It was years ago but it was under Woodward. Don’t cherry-pick - it happened under Ed’s watch.

We have a very poor defence. Do not let the goals against/clean sheets of last season fool you otherwise. You should thank De Gea’s heroic saves - our defence is bottom fodder at best. Smalling/Jones are a liability and I have simple statistics to back it.

2017/18 Season

Ederson - 70 shots faced - 20 goals conceded.
De Gea - 120 shots faced - 23 goals conceded
Lloris - 82 shots faced - 24 goals conceded
Courtois - 84 shots faced - 27 goals conceded
Karius/Mignolet - 87 shots faced - 34 goals conceded.

United played the most defensive of these teams and yet our goalie faced 120 shots on target. Our defence is nothing to write home about. Just be thankful we have a superhuman goalie otherwise we would have finished below Arsenal.

Nothing about Woodward’s signings have been sensible. Look at the other giants in Europe making astute signings. Players like Neymar, Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, etc should be playing for Man Utd. We make so much money - the turnover is like top 3 in Europe but only 2 of our players are world class in a squad of 30 players.

Remember this quote......”We could do things in the market that other clubs can dream about.” Yep, Woodward made that statement and he went on to buy Fred(his buttprint is still very visible on the Brazilian bench in Russia), Grant(a fifth-tier goalie) and Dalot(a no-mark fullback who will understudy a retired winger). Woodward is right....none of Man City or Liverpool would dream about the calibre of these mediocre players.

The reality is that he has not backed Jose Mourinho. Look at what Pep has bought....City were in a healthier state than United before 2016 and yet City have bought thrice the number of players Jose has bought. Pep spent about £250m on his defence alone - that is the kind of financial backing I expect from Woodward but he’s lagging behind.

You can dress this however you want but Woodward is doing a terrible job. Yet, when Jose fails to achieve the goal of securing the PL, the media would blame Jose when all the fault lies at the doorstep of Ed. Woodward has been bringing a dagger to a gunfight since SAF departed and this is why we have finished only twice in the top 4 in the last 5 seasons. It’s an embarrassment! In any other industry, Woodward would have been given his P45 for a shoddy job.
Glazers were not bad in financial assist i guess. We did buy pogba mikhi to adress weaknesses. Baily and lidelof for cb options. Its just moyes dark magic that destroyed team aura of winning mentality visible till now. I dont think any billionaire will keep on splashing cash like its happening to chelsea and city will have same fate

Whats happening at Chelsea , City and to some extent at Liverpool is very different to whats going on at UTD , the Glaziers are a glorified vulture fund , never forget that

Yes we are. It's not the quantity so far though, it's the obvious weaknesses in the squad that haven't been address and from leaks/rumours it doesn't look like they will be addressed. This will leave us with very little to no progress next season.

We're crying out for a LB and RW.

There is still time yet. Things will be going on in the background which the press are not aware of. I'd expect 2 more signings.

If anyone thinks we're going to challenge next year without multiple quality players being brought in then they're delusional. This summer is huge for us.
We are blindly walking into another season of abject failure. There is no way we can magically start playing good football and competing for the league and CL with the group we've got. We need 3-4 more upgrades on the squad players weve got. I'm like a broken record but Jones, Darmian, Rojo, Smalling, Young, Valencia, Mata are not good enough and havent been for years, we are acting like a small club in the transfer market this summer. We can forget a return to glory next season with this group of players.

As others have said, what a mental decision it was to close the window early this season. Fair enough from next season, but to do so straight after a World Cup really does seem terribly ill-advised. Personally can only see us signing one more player and that's it. I'm not too confident we will shift many more squad players out the door either. I'm looking forward to the season but at the same time we seem to be sleep-walking into it.

Exactly. LB and RW is a must for me.

There seems to be many on here who class Grant and Dalot as strengthening a title challenge next season.
I wouldn't be surprised if Grant does not play a single game unless Romero is sold and I think Dalot if firmly one for the future though may get some minutes. If Darmian is not sold I would bet on Jose choosing him over Dalot should Valencia need a rest. Hopefully Fred is an upgrade on Herrera.

Maybe in the next 21 days we pull some necessary signings out of the bag!?

3 weeks until the window closes, it's not gonna be a good 3 weeks is it?

We're linked with virtually nobody and nothing looks remotely close to happening.

The Prem is at a massive disadvantage by the way with the window closing early, the teams are fecking themselves over.

I think the Neymar deal has broken the market. Real Madrid look likely to be relying on Asensio next season after failing to secure any high-profile replacement for Ronaldo.

I'm looking forward to the season but at the same time we seem to be sleep-walking into it.
Allot of the smaller clubs did vote for it, but we voted for it, Jose apparently voted it to be open has soon as possible and its showing, what is our club doing this year? raking in the profits, yet we have spent money of a budget that is outdated by 12 years. We the richest club in the world, and our reaction getting blitzed by city and losing the FA cup final is 63 million spent, that is how we spent on di maria. They will only spend if we out of the top 4

We are already 2 years behind schedule on the building process, by now I would have expected jones, smalling, valencia and young to have been replaced at the back, still not, the worst part how poor our transfer summer has been and the reaction losing in the FA cup final, and the gap between us and city is there for us to see. We do need 5 players atleast to get us up to speed, some of our rivals are blitzing us
