Mata should have taken it and give Fred 8.

Well, it's been a while since we sold Kagawa. Rooney isn't here anymore. Mata is accepted to be a bench-player now. Lingard has stepped up and we also have Sanchez, but we have to remember we have a heavy, big-footed striker that would thrive with a real nr.10 behind him. Lukaku + a D.Silva type of player would be great. Lukaku just loves being at the right place at the right time upfront, but he lacks the guy to make those situations consistently happen.

Find a nr.10 and give him the number I say. Play Sanchez on the left, and buy a new right wing while we're at it.

I think Pogba has started the brand with number 6 since moving here and won't change it now. He wore number 10 with Juve in last season, but since moving here he has been wearing 6 on all levels.
At United and for the international team? That's a lot of levels..

The 10 isn't particularly special at United. Generally it's worn by a forward not a classic attacking midfielder.

Time to continue by speculation in this thread, by again saying Dybala will come in and take the 10. Or in my footie dreams that's what happens anyway. I still believe we have another muppet signing in us. Or two.

It's really not, in terms of being worn by classic 10's. Special players have worn it. But it's never been one of our classic numbers.

It's a shirt for a Centre Forward at United and we don't have anyone but Lukaku.
One thing we have to be fair about is that history is being written in the modern era too. It may be bittersweet but Rooney's a club legend. One of our greatest No. 10s during our most successful years as well. Even though he was more than a pure goal scorer I agree in that sense you're right, it's not the more familiar ten...but to me that's also got a bit more continental flavor and context. So think 10 is special at United. Maybe even moreso because it's not just the standard archetypal history

Very optimistic. I like it. Alas I can't see us getting half a muppet signing let alone one.

I get what you're saying but Rooneys most exciting years were in the 8 shirt.

Our 10's of note;
Rooney
Ruud
Teddy
Hughes
Whiteside

It's not until you get to Whiteside that you get anywhere near what a number 10 is, and even then it's a stretch.

I'd rather celebrate our own iconic shirts (7&11) and let other clubs have their famous 10's. The shirt has never been a big deal.

It should be earnt IMO. Nobody in our current squad / situation deserves it. I'll keep it free this year, give it to Pogba next season if he's playing well and still be with us.

Rooney always played behind a more advanced striker (Ruud, Saha, Tevez, Berbatov, Welbeck, RvP), which is what a number 10 is.

Denis Law?

David Beckham was gutted when he lost the number 10 shirt to Sheringham.

What would have the point in that? Mata is hardly important. Why not just save it for the next Woodward dream.
To give Fred (the main summer signing to date) a proper squad number. By the time United sign a top class marquee forward, I'd expect Mata to be the one to go.

Lukaku had the option to take No 10 but he refused and took No. 9 instead but I sense the sarcasm :P
Agreed.

Currency Lukaku should have the 10. But if true he rejected it, then it is best to leave it open until the next appropriate player emerge.

Don't think any of the current player are suitable to wear it.

Leave it vacant. Let someone earn the right to get it.

Yep i don't get the fuss 10 is just a number at United. 7 is the number that has always held a special importance. Give it to Rashford or Lingard or just leave it unoccupied for a year.

Beckham was gutted that he got he number 7 that his boyhood hero Robson wore?

He's been quoted loads of times over the years that he actually wanted the no7 shirt and asked for it when Eric retired.

It's a better story that he wanted to be part of the lineage of legendary 7s.

At the start of the following season he was asked about the number 10 shirt. I remember the interview (oddly clearly). He said "I'd have liked to have kept it".

Sheringham always wore 10. Cantona left, so they took 10 for Sheringham and gave Beckham 7 because he played on the right.

Even though he was probably one of the least influential of the "famous 7s", Beckham was probably the one that had the greatest influence in the number becoming so iconic.

Funny i remember an interview from that time when Ferguson said Beckham asked for the no7. It's possible one of us is misremembering but here's a quote from the kit man at the time Albert Morgan.

“Robbo was around when Eric came in but it was really Eric who kicked it all off,” he said. “I can remember David Beckham when Eric left – he was desperate for that number 7 shirt, absolutely desperate, and he did very well in it when he got it. Eric though was the one that clicked everything together, I don’t like to say he was the final piece in the jigsaw but he was a massive, massive piece in the jigsaw, that’s for sure.”

People actually want it to go to Mata or Rashfrord? Mata is on borrowed time and won't be here much longer and I haven't seen anything from Rashford to think that he's up to lacing Rooney's boots, never mind having his shirt. Save it for a signature signing or someone who steps up and deserves it.

For me, there are only 2 iconic shirts. #7 and #11. I say that because squad numbers came in in 1994 or there about, so even though others wore the number earlier, it was a positional thing and not a player thing. Cantona made #7 iconic. Giggsy makes #11 an iconic number. Those are the numbers that should be earned. And since Giggs left, no one has actually earned 11. I hoped that Martial would be worthy of #11, but don't think he has lived up to it so far. Perhaps an argument can be made for #10, but for me it hasn't reached that status yet.

I mean they're just numbers. They don't really matter. Januazaj had 11 for a year. If the club thinks it'll boost shirt sales and marketing/Mourinho thinks it'll motivate a player it does not really matter who we give it to.
