Their first start as a pair in a competitive game. Think this has potential. Compliment each other well in my opinion. Also, like that they did not hoof it at every opportunity when they were under pressure.
Agree. Victor was solid on the ball but Bailly was superb

Lindelof is a classy player always has time. I think he will become a more important player as the season progresses.
Bailey’s tackles are so well timed. They compliment each other very well, considering this was their first game together. They deserve to keep their place to see how they mature together.

Two ball players, but we still had a midfielder dropping deep two yards away from CBs. It's just Jose. Nothing to do with whatever CB's type in there.

I think Bailly is a very good defender if he can just cut out the lunatic moments and learn to read the ball properly when it's in the air. Of the defenders we have he is the one who usually looks composed and in control.

Lindelof I still feel like I can't judge yet. He's had awful games but also shown good ability. This season seems like the time to judge him rather than last.

Really hope Jose sticks with these two. They will feck up over the course of a season but which cb pair doesn't? They're young and learning, and Bailly is an absolute nutter. Lindelof is really likeable too.

Thought they both played well for most of the game. Little concerned about a lost of concentration that allowed Vardy to sneak a goal at the death.

There were a few moments that worried me but both possess qualities that could be useful to us. Probably a case of choosing the matches Lindelof plays as he has really struggled against physical forwards such as Benteke. I still think he has more to offer in terms of his distribution and influence on our build-up play.

I thought Bailly was our best player but would need to take a closer look at Vardy's goal to be sure.

Smalling and Bailly is our best CB pairing. Lindelof and Bailly are weak in the air and relied too much on Pogba

Lindelof will never be good enough for some on here even though he's improvement is clear to see and a very good world club. If he was to be sold yesterday, it would be more than we paid for him. It's sad as for some reason some players will always have the vultures circling them....Rom, Lingard and Pogs for different reasons too.

Some good moments, and some poor moments. Lindelof gets bullied off the ball too easily for me, and for Leicester's goal they (and DeGea) just seemed to switch off.

Looked pretty well but against a team depending on crosses Smalling will need to be thrown in somewhere.
Leicester doesn't play a lot of long ball except on set pieces, so Lidelof-Bailly is best to deal with pacy attackers. We will always need British CB for the long ball teams, so Jones and Smalling are useful.

Lindelof needs to bulk up and get rid of his nice guy image. Be like Vidic my son.

Bailly is our Vidic. Absolute nutter but you can obviously tell his potential will form him into a formidable one-man defense, especially if he remains our starter week in week out. Lindelof is clearly a sound defender as well - give him a run of games alongside Bailly and we might just have the most unexpected beautiful CB pairing ever.

This would be such a great partnership if we consistently pressed high up the pitch and played with a high line.

For the first game of the season they did well. Pulled off some good recovery tackles but by and large their overall positional game was better than average. If they stay fit they will be a good CB pairing. Their games compliment each other nicely. Our all round defensive game was quite good. The team moved well in formation and kept the lines between defense and midfield well defined. No body really drifted out of position and caused holes in our game, which is a good sign.

I absolutely love the pair. Especially Bailly. He just scares the hell out of me with his eccentricity. You know he has many brilliant moments and one erratic one in him. The question is, how costly will that erratic moment be?

I am convinced that if Bailly had been fit last season, no way would City have won the title with 19 points.

Lets also give them some time and games together. I am happy with that first game.

Iheanacho bought the ball down a tad too easily v Lindelof at times today.
Imagine if it is against teams like Liverpool / City or Real Madrid

I think they are ok now but hope they grow well together

Thought they did well considering it was their first game together, and despite that I actually felt more confident watching them than I do when we have the Smalling/Jones partnership (or Smalling with anyone, he always looks nervous and yeah, I know he can't help how he looks).

Jose has to keep these 2 together until the International break and then reevaluate-if they are doing well then they keep the shirts and Smalling, Rojo and Jones (in that order) get their chances in League cup games. We need a settled back 2 -Fergie pretty much had this in all of his good teams.

They will be a target for the opposition on set pieces every week due to how weak they are in the air. We might get away with it at home when we are more dominant but away will be a different story.

I also believe that their weakness is that both are poor in air and it is not really DDG strength either. On setpieces however they will get help from all other players, like Pogba who is strong in the air.

I have always thought either Bailly or Lindelof should be paired with Smalling, as complementing each other. However, you lose all the benefits with Lindelof as a ball playing CB if you pair him with someone who is poor with his feet. Bailly and Lindelof is a much better combo in that sense. Then rotate with Smalling when you face teams who are really strong in the air.

Bailly has speed but his tackling at times, is like a penalty or a sending off, waiting to happen. I like him but he needs to be more calm and attack the ball instead of the player. He seems to get worse as the crowd gets behind him, and dives in blindly.

They will get help from all other players. United concede too many goals from setpieces but imo most of them are from poor organisation.

If Lindelof was half as lunatic as Bailly, they would be perfect. I would like Lindelof to show a bit more aggression and take command of the attacker, as i think he can do that. Good signs are showing and let's hope injury doesn't prevent this partnership to build some understanding.

I don't understand people not rating Bailly. I think he's exceptional. He was all over everything yesterday.

The defensive unit as a whole wasn't so good. Leicester were able to get at us much too easily. Some of that was down to a midfield still working out who does what, and a big chunk of the blame lies with Darmian, but Lindelof also didn't exactly impose himself. He's decent, and consistent - rarely makes an actual error - but that's it. An in-form Smalling has way more about him.

Yes, we need a commanding CB who is good both in the air and on the ground. Smalling is Ok in the air but is not good on the ground and he certainly has to cut out his holding and swinging out of players, at set pieces. I cannot understand why CB's don't just attack the ball more.

I'm not a big fan of Lindelof (based on what I've seen so far) but we should give him a proper run at it. It's no wonder the board are, quite rightly, exercising caution when quoted £70 million for central defenders when it means this guy will just sit around on the bench all season.

I have huge misgivings about this pair in the air (they're bad aerially by any standard) but there are lots of good qualities, too. Give them a proper run of games together and see where we're at. It could save the club millions.

This pairing definitely has potential.

Biggest weakness is aerially, but we all knew that.
I wasn’t comfortable any time Leicester lobbed the ball up front, and on corners either.

It doesn’t help that DDG isn’t the most dominant in the box and likes to stick to his line, but overall I’m pleased with it.
Smalling will be used as the first choice squad rotation option, especially for teams that like to play direct which is fine by me.
Sell Rojo and Jones, get Toby in January and we’re in a great position.

I rate Smalling much more than Lindelof.

I'm happy if Lindelof continues to impress and challenge that view.

Our best CB pairing is Bailly and Smalling, currently.

Lindelof was solid on the ball, but he leaves too much for Bailly to do defensively. Once Vardy came on, we started to struggle (Vardy shin over the bar followed by the goal). Bailly can’t defend against two players by himself.

Lindelof is good when facing a 4-5-1 or similar but I think Bailly-Smalling and even Bailly-Jones is stronger defensively.

Mourinho did not get the new centre-half he wanted in the transfer window and, from the comments he made after the Leicester match about being a head coach instead of a manager, he is still not happy about it.

But considering Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly had played so little together in their time at United - just 99 minutes in total before Friday's game - they looked pretty solid and sturdy at the back.

Bailly can be a bit rash and possibly needs a voice in his ear as he is about to dive into a tackle to say 'stand up, stand up' but he got away with it against Leicester and is clearly a good defender.

We have a very strong squad. If you have round pegs in round holes, and all of them are doing the right job at the same time, then you are going to do well.

The best news for Mourinho is that it looks like there were will be a few battles going on for places in his first XI over the next few weeks, all over the pitch.

In what universe is two CBs defending one attacker? If the opponent have two attacker on the field they often get one to watch each. Vardy played on Baillys side so therefor is he the man to take on Vardy. Lindelöf had ihenacho to watch, as he had the whole match. The chances Vardy got was Bailly beside him.
