No serious manager worth their salt is taking up a caretaker role. Too much pride for that. Chelsea only got Hidiink because he was mates with Roman and was old anyway and didn’t want a full time gig.
Why not? If they're already unemployed that is.

Red Card for Casemiro!
To be honest, I had hoped we could rebuild under him. Getting Pogba felt like that was the moment when things would turn around. Really thought we wouldn't need to worry about top four again, and that we'd be regular top four contenders, sometimes challenging for the title.

Shame it didn't work out, but he had made it too toxic for everyone associated with the club. Alienating top players, those terrible self-obsessed United-bashing conferences, the absolutely terrible football style, sitting back, getting overrun in midfield and taking all those shots on target from Liverpool while Pogba, Martial and Fred look on. Football heritage my ass, we're fecking Manchester United. We may not win the CL too often, but we SHOULD be considered regular challengers, not some 2 starred opposition to brush off.

He never got what it means to be the manager of Man United, just the way Moyes and LVG didn't. LVG at least played the youth and won some big games, Moyes did jack shit.

Wingers, youth, attack, never-say-die, moments of brilliance. I don't care if we don't win anything under the first 2 years of the next manager. As long as those things improve, I'll be very happy to support him through thick and thin.

Maybe the CL draw accelerated this all. The board likely didn't have any trust in Mourinho being able to beat PSG.
That and a few other things:

1. deGea and Martial's contracts stalling
2. Pogba out in the cold
3. Mourinho already saying he's not sure about January transfer window.

Even if they want to support their man, its having a detrimental impact on players.

No more David Squires Emourinho/Moyesinho. I don't know how I can go on.

Gutted it had to end this way, as I did truly believe Jose was the guy to turn us around. But something had to change, and now we have proper time to get this absolute vital next appointment right.

For the lads feeling uneasy - he’s showed great glimmers of hope but this season has been resoundingly defeating. He had lost the dressing room clearly and has been making purposeful tactical decisions to serve his own narrative. He had lost legitimacy of his control a while back. Good riddance and good luck to the next guy

I feel I should be watching Bill Paxton's speech from Independence Day.

So glad the miserable bastard has finally been given the heave-ho.

He was the man to take over from Ferguson. We were 4 years too late.

Great. So we've sent a clear message to the players that whoever is manager of Man Utd that it is they, the players, who are the boss. This bodes really well....

I am surprised by the timing, I have to say. Losing to Liverpool is perhaps not a surprise, but there have been results earlier in the season that you would have thought would have led to this outcome.

Hope club puts lot of thoughts before getting the next manager, already three managers in a row now and we can't take one more step down.

I always supported Jose and still think he could have turned things around with the right conditions. But the club first above any manager or player. Decision supported. Now let's make the right calls otherwise we would be back to square one.

The best thing about this is we can stop all of these daft debates about whether or not the team will improve under a different manager. Finally it will be put to bed!

Just woke up to this very news and I couldn’t be happier, I really didn’t think they’d pull the trigger till March. Sucks that a guy had lost his job but he’ll be alright with that 22 million pay off, man I’m so happy.

Just for clarification, has he been sacked by the club or he left on his own will?

Cheers!

Geniunely celebrated more for this than any goal we've scored since the City game. Onwards and upwards. I don't care if the new manager is not a serial winner, I just want to see entertaining football.

Wingers, high-pressing, movement and a team that looks like they've played together more than once.

Vast majority of us hoped to see him sacked, he's gone now, but I think it's worth to remember all those beautiful moments we've had under Mourinho in last few years. This is a thread for those, no negativity, just great memories.

I absolutely loved our comeback against City at Eithad. 2-0 down, we made it 2-3. Brilliant game that gave me so much hope and enthusiasm. Thank you Jose for that.

Does it really change much though? does it change that our players are made of glass and have the mental fragility of a 9 year old? Does it change that our owners are leeches? Will it change that our structure from top to bottom is archaic and broken? Will it change the fact that Woodward will just chase names to sell shirts rather than having a solid transfer strategy?

While i agree it was probably best to part company with him, i just wonder if he was trying to pull the board out their collective posteriors about modernizing the setup and they didn't like it.

I'm worried that they are looking for new "yes" man, rather than someone who can make us great again.
It's not all on Mourinho. Woodward should be nowhere near hands on in terms of transfers. And it will be interesting to see if players like Pogba show any more than they did.
