Salah and KbD were 23/24 when they left Chelsea. They were way past youth stage.

Big feck up though, especially KdB who was superb in Bundesliga when loaned out.
Tbh that’s even worse, allowing to of the best players in the world go at that age, without noticing their talent.

I'd forgotten all about him. I can't really pretend I'm too bothered.

Clearly there was a problem with the youth setup at that time if they weren’t developing or being handled properly to put it all on José is a bit of a lazy rebuttal. What chances are youth getting now? Tammy Abrahams on loan again.
None of those three were youth products, though. And neither is Pulisic. These are/were all established first team players.

It is definitely fair to criticize our problem with a path to the first team for academy players, but using Salah, KDB, and Lukaku as examples is wrong. They didn't work out here because Mourinho was a dinosaur when it comes to attacking players. I remember him publicly criticizing all of them and running them out of the club essentially.

Its a good sign if you ask me. Ed could have easily bought him saying hey we need a RW but the fact that the club decided not to do so despite the huge business opportunities the deal presents means that the club are seriously considering a more structured approach to signing players.
Regarding Pulisic, I never felt he was really special the few times I watched him. When you watch Dembele / Mbappe, you get the feeling that they are special, Pulisic looks like someone who does the basics right, but other than that, I don't find him to be special or once on a generation talent and certainly not worth 60 million pounds
I guess we'll find out when we decide to either buy or pass on a right winger in the near future.

All three of those players "failed" here under a certain manager who has just been sacked by United. And none of them really failed. They were never given a real chance.
Mourinho was responsible for the de Bruyne and Lukaku sales but it doesn't explain all the other young players who have failed to make their mark at Chelsea in recent years.

Hate that it's Chelsea, but happy to see an American boy get such a high-profile move.

Gives me hope that one day I'll see an American outfield player star for United.

He's a very talented player who will thrive under Sarri, good buy for Chelsea in a position we need, hopefully he's Hazard's replacement though. :p

It's a strange transfer, they already have Hazard, Pedro and Willian to play on the wings. 60m isn't that bad of a fee when you consider Sterling was bought for 50m before the over inflated market and Pulisic has got the potential to be a very good player and obviously will have great market pulling power. The thing that makes it stranger is that they are willing to sell Hudson-Odoi who could end up just as good potential wise as Pulisic for 40m.
Possibly a Hazard replacement?

Wouldn't think so, that would be catastrophic. Either Chelsea is bolstering their forward line with a second mid-term replacement for Willian/Pedro, or Pulisic is taking Hudson-Odoi's place, which might or might not be a mistake.

Regarding those players, it only makes sense to criticize Chelsea if they left and became world class stars somewhere else. I can't think of a single CFC youth graduate that has done that.

I know he is highly rated but I have never seen top material in him.
I feel that he is talented but also overrated. I don't think that he is better than someone like Brandt for example.

Seeing Lukuku was good for them. He wasn't good enough, now we are stick with him.

This kid is no where near worth the money. Glad we dodged this one. He has pace and some trickery. Offers no more then the likes off Pedro, Willian et al. Maybe Chelsea are just looking to boost attacking options with Hazard likely going in the summer.

Dortmund got so lucky that Sancho hit the ground running at a time when Pulisic was running down his contract - the fans aren't that bothered because they've got a new young star but this would have been a huge kick in the teeth just six months ago.

Decent deal for Dortmund, potentially a good signing for Chelsea's long term and a bit disappointing that we weren't in the mix for such a versatile, young attacker. He's certainly one of the better attacking talents that were realistically available, with the potential to succeed at a top club.

Willian and Pedro really aren't that great.

Both were excellent players at one point in time but Chelsea need some freshness in attack.

How many academy players realistically go on to become world class? I'm talking about the recent inability to develop young players.

Matic was let go and brought back a couple of years later. Zouma was rated among the best young defenders in the world when you signed him. Barkley was signed when an arguably better player in Loftus-Cheek was already in your ranks.
Seeing Lukuku was good for them. He wasn't good enough, now we are stick with him.
He's not my favourite player either but he clearly has more ability than he was given credit for. He was sold for £30m in 14/15 and both Chelsea and Mourinho wanted to sign him for three times as much three years later. That indicates someone fecked up in a big way somewhere.

I really hope we don't regret this. I have a feeling this is another one we've missed out on, sigh... When are we ever going to sign a right winger ffs. Kid was a United fan too, I imagine we must of said we aren't interested anymore cause if we were I have a feeling he might of waited till the summer.

He's worth about a third of what they paid for him. Maybe half if everything goes well. Glad we let this one go.

Not really seen that much to justify the hype if I’m honest, although will have to judge him when he comes to England. Certainly not gutted we’ve missed out on him at the moment.

Doesn't look that promising to be honest from a Cheslea fan perspective.
But if stats were the only metrics, I would love to experience another Kagawa Vs Hazard saga, and we all know how that ended up. Fingers crossed.

Thought he was a bit overhyped then I remembered he's only 20 years old.

Think he's better in the middle of the pitch rather than RW, but he will certainly add good dribbling and speed to the aging chelsea wingers.

Guess this is why they're happy to let Odoi go.

They’re not happy to let him go. He won’t sign a new contract and wants to leave.

He will need to improve a lot to get into the chelsea 11

All this underlines is our need to get a director of football in place soon if we want to start arranging deals for the summer

He called them a 'legendary' club. That's already a contender for football joke of the year.

In recent seasons - Dembele now seems to be getting his stuff together at Barcelona, Aubameyang is doing well for Arsenal, Ginter and Sven Bender are both doing very well for Gladbach and Leverkiusen, Gundogan seems to be doing alright at City, Hummels for Bayern, there's been a few ;)

But yes, no guarantee for sure! Same with any transfer when you are buying potential.
That was an awful take by me, I'm somehow still operating on old Dortmund information. I don't think I ever got over the disappointment of Sahin, Gotze and Mkhitaryan.

I’m not sure on him. He’s got some great technical abilities but poor decision making and hides in games too often. He tends to overplay too. I think he’s can overcome those deficiencies though so he could make it as a very good player.

He’s a lot of potential right now and I don’t think Chelsea is the best place to develop that.

Really not fussed on him going to Chelsea, quite glad they have spent nearly 60m on him, think he has struggled for game time this year at Dortmund, his stats don't make to impressive reading, wouldn't say he is an upgrade on Pedro/Willian, although they are both in their 30s now so maybe one for the future.

Not a signing that gets me overly worried about them next season though.

On one side of things I am very happy for him and for Football in the United States BUT in retrospect I think this was the wrong move for him. Chelsea are not really known to give youth a chance and 2 or 3 bad performances he will get cast aside and sent somewhere else. Hopefully I am wrong but if he was going to the Premier league he should have gone to one of United, Arsenal, or Liverpool. With that being said I would love to be wrong and wish him nothing but the best.
