I don't like what is happening to the older 'normal' leagues i.e I-league (played over the course of a season not 3 months) - I don't think playing 3-4 months instead of a full season can be particularly helpful to developing young talents. Ecstatic about the win though - saw the match - thought we were excellent. 1st half was so-so but we restricted the Thais to shots from outside the box and set-pieces mainly. 2nd half, we absolutely dominated. I believe good things are happening for Indian football recently. We were 173 ranked just 3-4 years back. Now, we are 97th which is the highest we have been since 96'. Onward and upwards!
There is 2 league in Indian football I-League and ISL, both league share top spot in Indian football, but Indian football grow exponentially since introduction of ISL in 2013.
Here are some reason.
Marketing - As you know marketing is big part for sport in any country. I-League was here since 20 years, and having big club like 'Mohan Bagan' and 'East Bengal' they fail big time in marketing. ISL is commercial friendly they generate more revenue and money and surly give new life in this dying sport in India.
Player Contract - I League is fail in this area, there were stories where players didn't paid for full length of contract, and some time paid under value. Some time player got season long injury and suddenly he found himself without club and contract terminated. This is due to club didn't have enough money and contract are not well written. In ISL this issue is solve, now contract are professionally created and player has insurance to been paid full length of contract. Result some player can think it as carrier option.
Playing condition - One of biggest talking point when ISL introduce is playing condition in India, I think ISL promoter take it seriously and make sure players have good pitch and good facilities are available. Signing big name players (thought at retirement age) make sure standard maintain in league.
If you want to know how hopeless we are for playing condition I give you one example,
8-9 years ago 'Mohan Bagan' club couch told FA Cup organizer to improve pitch condition, as right now pitch condition are so bad he fear Mohan Bagan's player will got injured. I had seen that matches in telly and what I see was socking. It was 50% grass pitch other 50% was mud, In some area they applied sand to sock up water and mud.
Competition - It up to deliberation but only thing I point out is, in current Indian team, 10 players are from ISL and only 1 player is from I-League. I think having good couch and player do help to develop some of Indian players.
I partially follow Indian football so list can go on, but I don't want to bore you with it.
Form this years on ISL will play for 6-7 months which I think fair for state of football in our country.
I think ISL is still in early stage in India, but ISL do more positive then I-League in 20 years.
