He wasn't shit, final aside. Just average.

An improvement on Mignolet.
With both Mignolet and Karius, I got the impression that you were vulnerable to any attack you had to face, no matter how innocuous it was, that's something that simply isn't there with Alisson, and you can tell that your defence is benefiting from having someone they can rely on behind them.

I'd agree with that. Karius pulled off some fantastic saves at times last season, but if the back 4 doesn't have confidence in their keeper it'll have an effect on the whole team. We've spent a lot of money on him not just for his shot-stopping skills, but for his calming influence, not to say his excellent distribution.

It was the same with United during that albeit brief period when van der Sar was injured in 2009/10. Ben Foster was and is capable of world class performances, but he's also extremely prone to very costly errors completely out of nowhere, and when your defenders are shitting themselves about every attack, it has a knock on effect.

All goalkeepers are prone to some mistakes, because all players in any position are. The difference with goalkeepers is that their mistakes more often than not, lead to the team conceding.

Alisson has made a couple of errors this season, but fortunately for you, they've not mattered. It'll be interesting to see what happens if he does end up making a costly error, but until that day comes, you've nothing to worry about really.

You've benefited similarly from van Dijk's presence in the defence, because it means your young defenders are no longer looking at Lovren for guidance and leadership in the back-line. It's that sort of presence that United need at the moment, because none of Bailly, Lindelof or Shaw are ready to lead a defence, and with the best will in the world, none of Jones, Smalling, Rojo, Valencia or Young have the ability or command you want from your defensive leader.

It's mad how we've still not replaced Vidic, Ferdinand and Evra in that regard.

TBF, look how long it's taken us to sort out our defence. Especially the left back position.

Your persistence with Moreno in particular was baffling.

Karius/Mignolet in goal, Lovren at centre-back, and Moreno at left-back must have been the most terrifying combination for anyone playing with them. You'd be shtting it every time the ball went near them, even if it was you that put it there.

OK, here's a question.

Can you not see similarities between Robertson & Moreno?

Good question, probably not the thread for it. Think redman and I have already got a bit too close to going off topic.

I realised the thread thing after I posted, I'll re-route it to the Liverpool thread.

Was he doing this stuff at Roma or is it just because he has so many great attackers running into the right spaces at Liverpool? I thought he seemed solid but unimpressive for Brazil.

Both him and Ederson look a level or two below in traditional goalkeeping skills to De Gea or Neuer (not sure about him any more?) but with the way so many teams play now, obviously yourselves included, I wouldn't put it past them both to supersede De Gea even when he's still at his peak.

And they're both still young enough to improve the other parts. Not sure there's any room for improvement on their distribution!

I think he's been decent for us but he's far too casual on the ball for my liking. Sometimes he's so indecisive and looks like he's afraid to hit it long so has to make the perfect pass or hold onto the ball until it opens up for him.

What does the Caf make of him so far?

Also anyone else think he looks chubby here:

He's been good for me this year. I dont think he's casual but I do think he doesnt trust Matip with the ball at his feet. He does look a bit chunky but the underarmour isn't complimentary! :)

He's definitely got some love handles there.

I've not seen a great deal of him bar the odd game. He does look very casual on the ball, but I guess nearly all sweeper keepers do. Neuer's the same, never looks hurried even if the defender is launching at him. I'm just not a fan of that style of goalkeeping in general. I'm not saying it's bad, but there just seems to be too many really close calls. I couldn't hack it if De Gea was doing that. My heart rate would be doubling. And when it goes wrong, they're made to look foolish.

Massive upgrade on Karius and Mignolet though, which is the main thing.

His face seems to attract the ball, which is always a good thing, I agree with @OnlyTwoDaSilvas I'm not a big fan of all this risky business with modern keepers, I think both Neuer and Alisson had shaky moments yesterday that could have easily resulted in a goal, sake with Kepa against us in the F.A cup last week.

I'm all for playing it out from the back, but once the heat is on don't fanny about.

Yeah, that sums it up for me. I liked De Gea under Van Gaal, in the way he'd go short and always show for the ball, but once he had a couple launching at him and closing in, he'd be whacking it long.

There was a couple of times in his DDG's 1st season where he had an attacking player pressing him, and he feigned a clearance with a Cruyff-turn. It looked pretty slick, but at the same time, I was hoping he didn't make a habit of it. Thankfully he didn't.

A tier lower than the top keepers. It is fine to be able to play from the back or be a sweeper keeper and all. It is an added value to the modern day gk.
But in the end few things are most important for a keeper
- Pure shot saving ability.
- Develop the anticipation as to where the shot is going to come and be in a position to save them.
- Develop a great working relation with the defenders so they can close certain area between the goal post while keeper can be in a position to cover the rest.

In my view, ball playing abilities are secondary to it.

This.

I don't care a damn what modern football is all about, but in the end, the ball being far away from the post is what is most important. Don't feck around the ball to find a way to make a good pass, when you can kick it away

I actually watched Germany x Algeria WC2014 in the stadium. The media raved about Neuer's sweeper shenanigans and it was really entertaining to watch, but Germany could've conceded twice because of his recklessness.

He's a great keeper better at being one than Ederson. Ederson is better with the feet though. Alison could have cost Liverpool twice yesterday. Play it long, don't know why he's dead set against it.

Playing it from the back ten times better than your average keeper means feck all when you give away the ball in crucial period, and he did it couple of times last night. Neuer did the same too. Liverpool fans should know a thing or two about this.

Top quality keeper but not as good with the ball at his feet as he thinks he is.

Tries to act calm all the time. When a striker is closing him down at full pace, he is way too casual and slow to decide what he wants to do - this happened at least twice last night.

I think he'll have a very comparable Liverpool career as Reina. On his day capable of the sublime but not consistent enough to ever be considered the outright BITW

Having watched yesterday’s game, I felt that Neuer and Allison were competing with each other as to who would make the first mistake. Both were living dangerously at times...

He's too casual on the ball. I look forward to seeing Rashford etc pressing him on Sunday

I think he is more brave than good with his feet. He's got good passing skills but not special as Ederson. It can't be something casual anyway. Need fo be trained as part of buiding the playing style of the team as we see with Man City, Bayern or Germany.

I disagree that the quality of a goalkeeper with his feet is not so important. Its fundamental in the modern game imo. I can't think of any team playing high pressure/high possession football without one those keepers.

I could be wrong but i believe many people try to underestimate the relevence of a passing goalkeeper because they feel its a weakness of De Gea, but its a mistake. DDG could play that style for sure.
