Got a feeling Martial & Lingard are both going to be fit.

hope we deal with the expectation well

we seemed spooked against PSG when we fancied our chances strongly

Not feeling good about this. Our midfield will struggle and get picked off coming out of defense and these guys could thrash us on the counter attack. Would worry about what TAA and Salah will do to our left side on the break. Yes Rashford will carry a threat for us but aside from him we won’t have enough speed on the pitch. I can’t see Martial being ready, that looked like a classic groin strain against PSG and they don’t miraculously cure themselves inside two weeks. 1-2.

More posts like this please. Mad optimism around here runs parallels with a lot of the guff posted before PSG.

Thé midfield battle is the main concern. I wouldn't mind us going with a diamond and drafting in mctominay and then sticking Sanchez and Radford up top if lingard and martial are still out. Set pieces is another concern. We've been so awful defending them for quite some time and they've got some giants in there and one or two who can put in good deliveries. Mane is the big threat on their left imo. We need decent cover there and someone tracking Robertson's runs. Prediction 1-1

Martial and Lingard being available would be a huge, huge boost for us. Our game plan v PSG went to shite when they left proceedings as their replacements couldn’t carry out the instructions with the same effect. Their pace and movement will trouble Liverpool no end, particularly those third-man runs Lingard is so good at timing off the centre-forward. Liverpool’s bum-rush midfield, despite being absolutely creativity-free, aren’t even good defensively and I can see us getting in behind them and running at their exposed defence quite a few times on Sunday. Let’s hope we make those occasions count.

There's a lot less mad optimism this time around, thankfully. Not that our optimism or pessimism has any bearing on the result in the end, anyway.

I think that such things matter as they shape the expectations around the game and influence the psychological atmosphere. The influence is intangible though and I can't present evidence for it but I'm personally convinced that when the fans get a bit too confident and arrogant, it's getting more difficult for the players.

Yeah, you could be right. But I do think overall it's a generally negligible factor. I don't think arrogance or overconfidence really played a part in the PSG defeat.

Lingard would be a great boost if he can play. With him and Rashford buzzing about their defence, I'm sure they'd be able to catch Allison fannying about on the ball as he tends to do.

I reckon Lingard is going to just miss this game via a late fitness test, but Martial will be on the bench.

Still none the wise on who will start. I'd expect it to not be all of Rashford, Lukaku, and Sanchez though.

Exactly. The PSG defeat was caused by meeting a superior set of players.

Man. United are winning this. Same score as last season, 2-1.

It's amazing that we have the best defense in the league despite having such a horrendous midfield, free of any creativity and full of bum-rush nobodies.

I think in fairness that as the game earlier in season was a Liverpool victory and was the precursor to the end of José rein here, that it only seems right and proper to me that it is a United victory on Sunday and the precursor to the end of their title challenge! There seems a pleasing symmetry to this season sharing the victories as it ends the nonsense of José terrible season and the nonsense of Liverpool lifting the title.

Don't need to be creative to be hard working defensively. If anything, having three hard working midfielders who don't do much going forward would help you in that regard.

True but the post I replied to suggested our midfield wasn't even good defensively.

I think Fabinho and Wijnaldum have both been very good since the beginning of December. It's the third man of that midfield which creates a problem for us.

Huge game and the biggest in English football. I really hope we win to keep us in the top 4 and give a huge blow to Liverpool's title that they desperately want to win. I am nervous of course but feeling confident we can get a win. I haven't included Martial & Lingard in my below team simply because I haven't a clue if they will be passed fit to play. Personally wouldn't rush them back in case they end up aggravating their injuries further and are out for an extended period. The team were excellent on Monday night.

    Prediction:

Midfield and defence sort themselves out.
If Tony and Lingard don't make it, I'd go.
    ------------Sanchez-----------
    Raahford----------Lukaku
It's going to be an extremely physical game with lots of running. No place for Mata.

The pressing offered from your front 3 and the midfielders is the main reason why your defence has been excellent. VVD and Robertson's contributions are a bit overblown at the expense of the excellent defensive work of the whole team. Think Buvac left because he had a different view of the balance between attack and defence. Apparently, Klopp was right even though the attack is now less spectacular than last season.

Think Klopp may put Fabinho on Pogba with Henderson playing close to him too.

Pogba scores and sets up another couple would be much better. A hat-trick and I'm taking the rest of the season off. Sou will just pass off one goal as "anonymous other than the goal" I don't want that!!! I want absolutely no doubt who the difference was. A world class showing. Brilliance rarely seen. Am I making myself clear?
