If you could reverse the result of one match from the last decade...

Which would it be?

I've popped this in the football forum so it wouldn't be restricted to only games/results involving United, and supporters of other clubs could chip in, and international results could also be included.

The idea for the thread came about while listening to the Totally Football Show podcast, hosted by James Richardson. In it, Michael Cox (who I'm a big fan of) mentioned when discussing Ranieri's appointment at Roma that if there was one result in the last 10 years that he would reverse if he could, it would be Ranieri's Roma being beaten by Sampdoria on 2009/10, effectively costing them the title (which was won by Mourinho's Inter). Thought it would be a good idea for a thread.

There are two that stick out to me. One is the CL final in Rome in 2009, which I still feel we probably should have won. The other would be the 4-4 draw against Everton in the 2011/12 title race, which I think killed us mentally and probably cost us the title. I'm certain had we won that game, we would have beaten City the following week, won the league, and then kicked on for another 3 in a row the following season.

Post yours!

Edit: We're all coming up with a lot of the same stuff, so to make the thread more interesting, pick one game involving your own club/country and one involving another club/country you have a soft spot for!

One of 2009/2011 finals. Probably 2009 cause I felt we were nearer to winning it, in 2011 they were just so much better.

Chelsea - Barcelona 2009, Chelsea were robbed and should have been in that final.

Of course we would have beaten Chelsea. :)

2009 final. Would have been the first club to retain the CL.

2009 CL final, we would have been the first team to retain the CL and Fergie would have had the 3rd CL title that he deserved.

sure the CL finals would've been great but we got thumped by a much better team.

I'd say Real in 12/13. We were the better team and got fecked over by that Nani red card. Fergie deserved better than last-16 in his final season.

As you say the CL finals, the Everton game or indeed the City game itself are pretty hard to beat.

Maybe that Fulham game in 2014, just imagine if a few of those 81 crosses would have borne fruit for Davey :wenger:

2009 CL final. That night in Rome.

In the 2011 final I didn’t expect much. I expected us to get beaten in that match, but the 2009 final hurt a lot more, because I genuinely didn’t think there was a team in the world that could do that to us.

At first I didn't realize you wrote "decade" so I was going to say Porto in 03/04...not only would we had a big chance of winning the competition (they went on winning it beating Lyon, Deportivo La Coruna and Monaco), we probably wouldn't have had to endure Mourinho at our club. And all of that because of a horrendous offside call.

Yep cant argue with those who have already mentioned the 09 and 11 UCL finals for obvious reasons

I'd throw a mention at last seasons FA Cup final as well, I'm sure it wouldn't have had any long lasting impact in terms of Mourinho but it's another trophy at the end of the day

Feet up at home.
Apart from the CL finals I would go for the Madrid game where Nani was sent off.

That will piss me off for ever.

vs Portsmouth in the 2008 FA Cup.

The treble was definitely on that year. A double treble for the club would have been amazing.

That's a good shout if you wanted to extend it out an extra decade.

Another one that hurt me was the second leg of the Bayern tie in 09/10; I loved how surprisingly good we looked post-Ronaldo, and if you think about the fact that Bayern got Lyon in the semi-final, we could have had a chance of winning the CL that year too.

With some luck United could have had a ridiculous CL run in the period 07-13.

2009 CL Final. Would have nipped Barca's era of domination in the bud and cemented us as one of the all-time great teams in football by being the first to win the CL back to back.

Us vs West Germany 1974 World Cup final and I wasn't even born yet. Also 2010 WC final but Spain was better. Could've won though. As a PSV fan definately the semi final in the CL against AC Milan. So close!

The Bayern tie in 2010 hurts more than any game over the last decade.

We arguably were already extremely dominant during that period; 3 finals in 4 years between 07/08 and 10/11, with another semi-final in 06/07.

2009/11 CL final, was between the best two teams in the world at the time, my feeling was that it could go either way.

But the result Everton game in 2012 is the one I would love to reverse. Because I thought the league was ours for the following reasons.
(1) If Fergie 's United are ahead of you at a certain time of the season forget it.
(2) Everton were having series of bad results ,only to change their formation few games before playing United and turned into a 2009/2012 Barca side.
(3) We had a comfortable points gap between us and City.
(4) We were battered by City at OT, it hurted me and I thought the only way for us to have the last laugh was to win the league.

That Everton match was terrible.

Definitely, but with a little bit of mental gymnastics that period could have been even more epic.

I agree. The weird thing about that match as well was that we played so well for parts of it, especially in the second half. I remember when Nani scored the third and the commentator said "some teams buckle under pressure; this team positively thrives on it!" We scored a fourth like 10 minutes later and I was certain, absolutely certain we were going to win that game and carry on to win the league.

We really should have won that one. The Barcelona finals don't hurt that much: we lost to a far better team, that happens.

But that fecking Bayern game at OT, oh my god. The stupid goal we conceded right before half-time. Van Bommel and co. kicking lumps out of our players - targeting a half-fit Rooney in particular - with impunity. Rafael getting sent off when his first yellow should have been a yellow for Van Bommel actually who, as in most games of his career, could have had about seven yellow cards.

God, I'm getting angry even now. And even in München, where we played mostly terribly, we had a great chance at 1-0... and conceded a ridiculously stupid goal right at the end.

CL 2011 - Lyon vs Dynamo Zagreb 7-1 (1-1 halftime)

Pretty much any other (normal) result by a hardly scoring Lyon that season would have seen Ajax move into the knock-out rounds. Regardless even of the two clean, disallowed goals by Ajax (and the clear penalty denied) by a Portuguese ref involved in the Apito Dourado corruption scandal, against Madrid that same evening resulting in a 3-0 loss rather than a 3-3 draw (which would also have been enough to get to the knock-out rounds).

That result was just impossible... The stench of potential matchfixing too great to be ignored. Thus of course, it was ignored by UEFA... :(

World cup 2010 final.

Duh.

Wouldn't have to change a lot either. Just tilt the trajectory of Robben's shot upwards bij 2CM.

1. Portsmouth 2008 FA Cup Semis
2. One of the CL finals
3. Either of the Manchester derbies in 2011-12 season (we would have won the league that season)

Adding a non-United one, I'd love to see how far Australia could have gone in the 2006 World Cup had we beaten Italy in the round of 16. Hiddink had us set up so well, and we played so well against Italy. Would have got the Ukraine in the QF's had we gone through, and after that, a young Germany side that had played well but was hardly flawless. Who knows what could have happened...

Gotta be CL 2009 final for me, alternatively CL 2011 final, Wigan loss in 2012 or Portsmouth loss in 2008.

Aguero to hit the post or something rather than getting that late winner. It was such a strange day. Did expect City to win it, but then QPR got the lead and hope returned.

In some ways we didn't really deserve the title for giving away the lead with Wigan and Everton at home. Although to still get it would have been great.

Any game in the 11/12 season, erasing City winning it in the last second from history.

vs Portsmouth 2008, we should won it.

CL Final vs Barcelona 2009. I felt we could win it at that time and there's an anticlimax game of the season. Or maybe if we were not rest our key players vs Hull in last game of season, maybe diferent story happen in CL Final? Who knows?

vs Arsenal 2019, if we fail to finish on top four this season. Maybe?
