He isn't even the best dutch defender to play in the PL. Stam was better. However, there is a lack of proper CBs available and he is well worth the 75m they paid. If anything he is exactly what we lack. We are forced to play Smalling for aerial ability but he is useless at passing and always pulling shirts. Van Dijk can do everything from win duels, pass and lead. The only CB better than him is Koulibaly and maybe Varane depending on consistency.

So there is this and Klopp renting Rodgers' house. Any other interesting stories with Footballers and Managers renting each others houses?
Ousmane Dembele was living in Klopp's house in Dortmund and newspapers reported that he left it full of trash when he moved to Barca.

VVD is the perfect example of how to lift a defence and raise everyone's game. Any CB playing alongside him will improve.

His positioning is next to none. Every ball he clears or intercepts looks so simple.

Yeah, but you wanted Perisic, Willian or Zaha instead of Martial so you can kind of understand people who laughed at you:
Which is ironically what Mourinho wanted. Funny that.

He’s brilliant not going to lie I’m gutted we didn’t even try to get him.

He’s a great player but an even better leader.

The guy is absolutely ridiculous. 70m is a bargain for such a defender. Top 2 or 3 best defenders in Europe.

Lets keep the praises to a minimum. Matip was just as good as him today but we aren't seeing any bump to his thread? He was okay but more importantly he scored the goal when his team needed it.

Liverpool could have paid €150mil for him and it would still have been a bargain for them. He was exactly what they needed. Unfortunately.

Very good player but in standard Liverpool form, he gets away with murder.

See the pen shout today, he fecked up twice. And stopping playing in the league recently to wave for offside while clearly letting the striker through. Obviously even the best defenders get caught out but that's not just being caught out. Stuff like that could cost Liverpool the league. Of course they get away with it and no one bats an eyelid in the end though. Fine margins.

He is excellent, really commanding and comes up with a big moment now and again. He's definitely the best they have had in a long time. Still think fans underestimate how important that position is, be a massive mistake by United to not upgrade this summer. That and a RB are essential for me.

Looks like he has switched off a bit eh. Not seeing the same verve in defense that he usually have.

He's clearly amazing. Don't get why people need to be blind to this fact just because he wears Liverpool shirt.

He's probably the best performing scouse I've seen since Torres in his prime.

He was outstanding once again. Easily one of the best defenders at the moment.
Also, a big leader for a team who seem they can't stop winning & winning!

Yeah he is the hot thing at the moment. I think someone like say Laporte is better and also that he is not as good as people make out.

He is still one of the best central defenders around don't get me wrong, but can be exposed against quicker players more. In the air he is a beast though and few players can match him. Maybe Smalling only in the premier league.

Posts like this makes me wonder if you see him play.

VVD is rapid. Not many who fancy a foot race with him.

Matip made an own goal and VVD scored one. Not to be a stats humper, but seems a bit of a stretch.

I for one, am quite content with him and De Ligt as our central duo for the coming years.

What? He wasn’t dribbled past by any player in the PL or CL by mid February. One of the fastest CBs in the league.

Best defender in the world comfortably.

And could be for the next five or six seasons. Our most important player by a country mile. I just know we will eventually win big trophies with him in the team.

Might not be this season but we will.

He was dribbled past by Sterling when you played at Etihad.

Dribbled past is the silly word instead of tackles lost. Again that's a stat that lacks context as he attempts way too less tackles (maybe because of how good he reads the game).

Edit: Btw agree with your overall point. He is one of the fastest CBs in the league.

I only based myself on the numerous reports on the issue. Even if it disregards some sequences of play, it still shows that he’s definitely not exposed against quicker players, or more so than other great CBs. He won a footrace against Adama Traore earlier this season if I remember correctly.

Wasn’t anything special last night, mind you, but just went about the business quietly and did his job, like we’ve come to expect from him. Came up with a massive goal though, between two of Bayern’s best headers of the ball.

He has a similar Aura that I felt we had when Vidic/Rio played. You just feel that extra bit more confident knowing you can attack freely, and if you lose it then it'll get snuffed out.

It's rare to get such a physical powerhouse with excellent ball control/skills also. It really is strange that clubs weren't queuing up for him, but he's stepped up a level at Liverpool than he showed at Southampton.

Well I agreed that he is one of the quickest CBs in the league. Point I replied to was to address "wasn't dribbled past", it's a naming confusion. If player don't attempt tackle and the attacker just dribble past the player then it won't be counted for "dribbled against". In whoscored.com it just means tackles lost. If you don't attempt one, you don't lose.

Rashford vs Liverpool this season when he dribbled past VVD and crossed the ball. Since VVD didn't attempt to tackle, it's not counted as "Dribbled against".

There is one from Sterling too, which is even more clear but not able to find it.

Do you reckon there's much in the rumour that De Ligt could be joining up with VVD at Anfield next season ?
Eh, last I heard he's probably joining De Jong at Barca. But I don't really get into the transfer muppetry. Trying to figure out which are baseless rumors and which are true is like a fulltime job.

More and more you can see strikers keeping away from him, that's a mark of a really good defender. If only we could find someone like him we'd be very well set. De Ligt and Lindelof would be a fantastic partnership.

It’s like they haven’t seen that game where he sort off steps of Mbappe and says there go down my outside and when he does he keeps pace and gets a foot in. He’s fast, hate to say this but he is the standout defender for me of this season. 75mil looks a bit of a snip.

VvD is very fast, but not Mbappe fast. While his top speed is seemingly great, acceleration is not as good as some attackers have obviously. When he cannot match in speed he compensates with positioning and awareness.
He also seems to be 3rd in line for captain's armband, which shows his current standing in the team.
