This is, sadly, a prime example of why Neville has evolved into a crap pundit. That comment is nothing more than a dig and has nothing to do with LVG's comment re Ole's brand vs Jose's. I actually think LVG is right in that not much has changed tactically aside from freeing up Pogba, we are still a counter attacking team but with happier players who will actually try for the manager now. I'm hoping Ole has a plan for summer that will allow us to tweak our system and allow us to play more possession based football against the stronger clubs, not saying we need to become a wannabe Barca but we don't have it in our locker currently.

Congrats to Ole - it is deserved given the upturn in form and I can only imagine the timing is due to needing to start speaking with players re transfers - anyone inbound will want to know who the manager is going to be next season so at least now we know how we're moving forwards.
What's crap about it.
LvG put in a outrageous claim. He is bound to get reaction from the media. And Neville is a media man now

Nonchalantly scoring the winner...
I have no idea whether this will work out or not but, given how well he's done thus far, it would have been perverse to appoint someone else instead.

That said, we're judging Solskjaer off a very small sample size of games and even if waiting a few more months barely changes anything I'd still have opted to do that, just in case. However there are obvious benefits to appointing him now too so..... *shrugs*
An actual, sensible post. I agree with this.

I'd also add that announcing after back to back defeats seems very odd, especially after the highs previously.

Good Luck, Ole, hope the board back you properly!

Ole in. Pretty exciting times ahead I believe.
It was important to get it sorted so that new players coming in as well as extending players have clarity

Well that's to be expected considering he came mid season and has only been here for 3 months. LVG probably doesn't watch our games except the big ones, so thinks we have only played counter attacking football. He also downplays the massive amount of injuries we've had. United fans didn't turn on LVG until his second season, because we gave him time to buy the players he wanted and implement his system. He's bitter.
Yh of course, I'm not debating any of this. I said in my original post that I'm happy about Ole and hopeful he has some plans to tweak our current system but we won't see that until we get a sense for the players we want to sign. VG is bitter for sure (hence his joy at Scholes failing as a manager) but that's not what my post was about.

I read Van Gaal's interview and the interview with Neville linked to in that tweet you quoted. Nothing he said was in any way incorrect. So I don't see any basis for you calling him a terrible pundit based on that tweet.
But surely you understand how the two sentences are irrelevant to each other. It's like me saying Pep's Barca are similar to Enrique's Barca. However, Valverde's Barca are crap. The original point is the comparison between two teams. In my mind Neville is a pundit and an ex player and made a name for himself originally because he was great explaining tactical parts of the game, this is just a personal dig at VG that has no relevance to what the first part of his tweet is about. There are some terrible pundits out there and I feel Neville is starting to become controversial for the sake of it. If he doesn't agree with VG, rather than attack his football which is a pretty basic way of retaliating, he should address what VG actually said and analyse the differences between Jose & Ole to demonstrate his point.

What's crap about it.
LvG put in a outrageous claim. He is bound to get reaction from the media. And Neville is a media man now
Sadly the last part is true - Neville is a media man. What was outrageous about LVG's claim though? I suspect the reaction from Neville is actually in retaliation to VG's 'fantastic' Scholes quotes re him failing as a manager.

You can never predict the future, all you’ve got is the past as an indicator. And from his spell so far he absolutely deserves the full time job. It’s 3 years, it might not work out but you can bet it’ll be a damn sight more fun than the last 5 have been.

I don't disagree with you here, but nothing in this post backs up your earlier point that it's a huge gamble. Or at least more of a gamble than getting any other manager in.
I think it's a huge gamble tbh. If Solksjaer is not the man that adds to the list of managers that have failed. The club will have to look into itself and really change things because of the realisation that the best manager couldnt do it, the best choice by SAF couldnt do it, ex player / manager couoldnt do it... Who's left?

Poch is more likely to not fail imo.

I'm in the same boat. I think we should've waited until the end of the season. If we wanted to do it so we can prepare for transfer targets, why not appoint a DOF now?
The DOF is purely speculation, there has been no mention of it from Utd whatsoever. It’s getting a bit annoying at this stage.

Great news.

But Ed.. seriously..? Do you really have to talk? Can't you just smile and wave? I just hope Ole will also have his effect on you (or.. just.. you know, appoint a DoF already).

Sorry mate, you lost me here. You're saying since his first game we haven't played with a clear pattern or direction?
Yes we haven't, they talk about us being attacking but we're not we just wait for oppositions mistake like under mourinho we have not really played the kind of football that will fill me with confidence since the cardiff game but like I said we're winning so let's keep watching.

Awesome and inevitable. He surpassed all expectations and essentially earned the job.

We need to be patient with Ole, let’s face it City’s squad is far superior and it’s going to take time for him to build it his team.

The right appointment, but he needs the right people, in the right places under the right structure.

If we give him that, he can focus entirely on making the football side work and I'm sure he's capable of it.

We've spent the last 5 years signing commercial deals left eight and centre. Now let's get some football minded people to sort out the football side of the club.

He needs to be able to strip the squad back and build it into what he perceives as being capable of winning.

I'm looking forward to the ride, and even if it doesn't work, you know he won't throw anyone under the bus and won't hesitate to hold up his hands and walk away if it's right from the club.

I hope the current squad can see that they have 2 months to fight for their long-term future and use that to finish the season on a high.

Not sure if this is the right time to have done this. If we get knocked out by Barcelona (likely) and then don't make top 4 has it really been a turn around in fortunes?

Couldn't be happier to have him as our permanent manager.
It was pretty obviously going to happen anyway though.
He needs plenty to spend, but he has a good core of players to work with who all Seem to respect him.

I have my doubts. I said that in his thread but now, when he is confirmed, it is not important anymore. Lets hope that he will be excellent for us.
I have bad streak regarding managers. Last two were my no1 pick and we all know how that ended. Ole wouldn't be in my top 5 choices so by that logic, he will be great:)
 I like this optimism, I think as a collective, whether or not we think this is the right appointment at the right time, it's time everyone got behind the manager and stopped talking about are alternate options and focused on supporting Ole and the direction he wants to take the club. What we don't want as fans is the ghost of Pochettino waiting in the wings should Ole fail.

We’re basically back to where we were when Fergie retired now. Take 2. A club rebooted. Bobby Ewing turning up in the shower.

The philosophy behind this appointment is the same as it was with Moyes, the correct philosophy, except this time it’s not Moyes.
This is how I feel as well. The club 'feels' like United again and that's what we need to get back to. Haven't been this excited about the future of United since Fergie was in charge. Let's hope he can be just half as good as Fergie and we'll all be very happy indeed.

Yes, because Mourinho left us in an impossible situation. Ole had no right to even be in contention for top 4 this year, and Barca are Barca. Anything can happen.

I absolutely guarantee that the three year contract Ole got will have cost the club less than one year under Pochettino. That's the cynic in me talking but I'm delighted we've finally confirmed this, there were no other candidates for me.

I want him to succeed so badly. Would give me immense pleasure to see that happen for Ole.

I'll be even more nervous now during our matches:)

I also think he needs to consider bringing in someone else on his team. We are dire in possession and I feel we need to address certain technical issues.

He should also ask for someone to help with the transfers. He needs all the help he can get.

Come on Ole!

He's given us PSG and a quarter final tie against Barcelona, we were doing well in the FA cup and could finish in the top 4 after a shocking start, we haven't been this relevant in years. If he doesn't win another game all season it will leave a bad taste but he's done amazing work since coming in. Judging him negatively on anything he's done this season is simply unfair.

Clubs are making deals with players all year round nowadays (Bayern just signed Hernandez). And players would want to know who is the manager next season. There are many other things to focus on.

What happens when we end the season trophyless and outside the top four?
Honestly I wouldn't even mind. The guy had an impossible task to begin with. It's was unfair to ask that at the time. What he's done these last 3 months has been nothing short of unbelievable.

I hope Fergie's been sitting on a big list of potential targets him and the scouting team have identified for United 2.0. I love the out of nowhere, 'who are you?' signings.

We are always questionable on our timing. Like how we gave Jose that new contract when our downturn in fortunes had begun. Happy with Ole but it wouldn't have killed to wait till the end of the story's chapter before buying this book. Then again if the club wants to start planning for transfers early maybe confirming the appointment early is the right decision
