As far as I can remember, he's always played as a lone holding mid when we play with a 3 man midfield. With Herrera to the right as more of a box to box. Maybe Ole has played them in a two recently but I don't remember that happening before. You're welcome to provide any info on that if you have it available.
He played higher up than Herrera did at times under Jose...

Are people really seeing Herrera's man marking of Hazard as some kind of world class performance? Which should be used to show his supposed quality? Neville seemed to think Hazard made it easy for him. He did get motm, but could he really do that with players like Messi, Ronaldo etc?

It's a defeatist, jammy attitude about the whole club currently. Fans seem to have gotten insecure about bringing in star players as they'd rather now go the route of young players with potential or scrappy veterans who bleed red. The sooner the club joins its peers and its rivals in embracing the modern, classier game the sooner we will find an identity and grow into the future.

Edit: To be fair, they all bleed red don't they

I wouldn't lose sleep over losing Herrera. Fans get fooled by a player kissing the badge, or thumping his chest or putting a crunching tackle. "He bleeds red", "future Man Utd captain", give me a break. He's a mercenary, like most of them. If he left his home team for better pay, what makes you think he won't do it again?

He's been a decent player at United (and I'm being generous with decent because his sideways passing drives me nuts), but is approaching his career sunset and should we reward him with a bumper contract? Have we learned feckall from Sanchez?

United needs young and hungry players: I'd love to see Tielemans, Partey, David Brooks, Doucouré join us and let Mata, Herrera, Matic etc ushered out.

I personally thought Hazard was just shit in the game, which to me wasn't a surprise, because he's inconsistent.

Totally agree. He is not a bad player but 30 in summer and limited in many sides of the game.If he wants some big upgrade on wages just let him go.He is not worth it

Not overly fussed. Love his passion but don’t think he’s that good of a midfielder.

Good servent to the club and gave his all! Deserves a final big payday and at PSG he’s get that and a few league winners medals as well.

United with or without him are still a massive work in progress so his departure won’t make to much difference in the grand scheme of things.

Sadly think he's gone now, quite a few reports he's signed with PSG

In honesty, taking away his passion and competitiveness he's a good but not great midfielder. Will be sad to see him go though

Not concerned. Not worth 200k plus per week and if somebody is willing to pay him that, go for it. Solid player, far from a world beater.

I'll put it in other terms, imagine Darren Fletcher in 2009 came to Fergie and demanded 150k per week (and he was a better player that season than Herrera has ever been for us) otherwise he was signing for another team.

Fergie would have marched him to the curb. This should be no different and thats exactly what United are doing.

Average player. Limited in his shooting ability, dribbling and passing range. Good at running and that attribute will not last long at his age. Rated by fans because he is 'passionate'. Clearly not passionate enough to reject an extra 30k. Never liked him as a go to CM, he is too lightweight and shouldve been a bench option. However, we dont need a 200k 30 year old average CM as a bench option next season. Right move by the club for once atleast we know we are buying a CM for sure in the summer. I think Pereira, Fred and McTominay will be used for depth. Ideally we sign a DM and a CM. However, I would be happy with Saul and if Pogba leaves then bring in Fernandes as well.

Can anyone explain as to why a big club like United can let so many contracts run down into the final season and give contracts to absolute trash?
Why aren't other clubs like Real Madrid, Munich, Barcelona or Dortmund (exclude Lewandowski) ever fearing contract run downs. We have De Gea running down yet another contract for the second time under Ed Woodward. Is this not enough to show the owners he hasn't got a clue how to run a club??

Ya know what lads, as much as I like Herrera and the passion he showed for us, I don’t think he was ever really anything more than an energetic, tidy midfielder, certainly not the savior to our midfield which the transfer fee and some of the hype suggested at the time. For me, he was just another non United signing that was made out of panic/inexperience in the transfer market after fergie retired, not to mention the awkward way we went about it.
Dunno is it confirmed that he’s gone yet but they’re my thoughts, but the real point I’m trying to make is this could be good business if we were to go and sign the lad Bruno Fernandes from Sporting to replace him. Have only watched him on YouTube and followed the other thread on him but that together with his stats make him seem like a real upgrade.
All the best to Herrera if he is gone. But good to see that we won’t shell out huge wages to average players.

Herrera is one of my favorite players but if he is asking for crazy money then I wish him the best at psg.
We can find a better midfielder for much less money, that's the harsh reality of the situation

He won't he will be loaned out somewhere or nowhere near the team. They can afford his wages and they haven't paid a fee for him. I am surprised they have given someone who will be 30 at the start of the season a 5 year contract. I think it's a bit foolish.

I'm so disappointed. I loved the guy.

But I suppose a player like him would only get worse as he gets older, he relies a lot on athleticism to get everywhere on the pitch. PSG could get 1-2 good years out of him before he declines.

Lots of people seem very confident that replacing him will be easy.

We’ve already tried to “upgrade” him three times (Schneiderlin, Matić, Fred). Let’s hope it’s fourth time lucky :nervous:

I think Ed Woodward changed the strategy in terms of contract renewals

Previously contracts would get renewed every 2-3 years meaning wages being increased more often.

This option of a further year only came about a few years ago meaning the club would get an idea whether a player is likely to stay or not. If they did then great as the club haven’t had to renew contracts often but it looks like it is slightly backfiring with players in no rush to renew contracts.

If we had been successful in the league, like City, for the past few years then the contract strategy would work fine but being on the fringes of a Champions League place each season means the players hold the power.

We gave 28/29 year old matic a contract and paid 35 m for his services while a player who still works his ass off for the club doesn't deserve the contract?

Should we laugh at ourselves too?

Still find it funny how Pogba is the mercenary while our badge kissing, club loving 'embodiment of United' skips off at the first sign of oil money. Captain material indeed

Is it official? Until then we should stop judging i think. While I think drama is going to be bigger when pogba's contract renewal time comes up.

Comes across as a nice lad but bar a good half a season in my opinion he really hasn't done enough for me to lose sleep on the issue.

Same goes for mata. Both amazing lads and they have acted impeccably whilst here but they haven't done as well as I thought they would have done. In fact mata has been a big disappointment on the pitch for me for most of the time he's here.

No secret that Herrera, Mata and De Gea are close off the field. Worrying that if Herrera goes, Mata could be off....De Gea might start to consider his options. I’m hoping Herrera is paper talk and he signs up.

What I'm asking myself too. don't see the same energy for Herrera that I saw for PP.

I think comments like that are a bit harsh to be honest. If the rumours are true and he's signed a 5 year contract on £200k p/w then I don't blame him. He'd be silly not to sign up if we're not offering anything close to that length or value. He's got a family and future to think of, simple as.

But I for one am glad we are not caving in to stupid contract demands. The guy is turning 30 in August, no way I'd want us signing him up on a 5 year contract for crazy money - but best of luck to him as he's behaved impeccably since he's been with us.
