Descendents were the pioneers of that particular sub genre imo, and they were about 20 years earlier.

Been listening to punk for about 25 years, but I've never really gotten into so-called "pop-punk". All a bit too cheesy and soft for me. Unless you call jawbreaker, older alkaline trio and jimmy eat world pop-punk, which I wouldn't but I've seen them mentioned in other replies.

Going to see Jawbreaker next week, finally!
Well, everyone seems to has a different vision when it comes to 'Pop-Punk' and a lot of different bands seem to have a phase of songs that fit it when maybe a lot of their other stuff doesn't. Brand New are a good example IMO as their first album fit it rather well, but none of their later stuff was anywhere close.

My first thoughts when it comes to Pop-Punk are still the likes of blink-182, New Found Glory etc as that's when I first got into it and they were the top bands at the time. I think they are more what I class as 'Pop-Punk' as it is a softer, often classed as more 'whiney-voiced' kind of Punk music. I think you are speaking more of the slightly hardcore punk kind of music, which makes me think of bands more like The Clash and The Ramones etc as the more major bands. Of course, the evolution of music is vast and there will have been bands before Blink and NFG that pushed that sound and influenced them, but I feel like these guys took it to the next level and have influenced what have been my favourite bands throughout the 2000's so far.

Pop-punk for me are indeed bands such as NFG and blink 182, but I really never liked them. As you say, I like my punk a little bit more edgy :)

It's just an opinion of course, but I think a lot more interesting things emerged from 70's punk than the pop-punk stuff. Probably also because I was listening to punk for a while before bands such as NFG emerged and became popular with the younger kids. I was more into the first wave of hardcore bands: Bad Brains, Minor Threat, DOA, Black Flag, Adolescents, Hüskür Dü... and punkrock bands such as Agent Orange, Social Distortion, Rancid, Bad Religion, Avail, Dead Kennedys, New Bomb Turks, Bouncing Souls... Also the whole emo scene with Jimmy Eat World, Jawbreaker, Hot Water Music, Alkaline Trio I enjoyed a lot.
Later on I started listening a lot to the so-called postpunk bands, Mission of Burma, Fugazi, At the drive-in, Hot Snakes, Refused, The Thermals, Quicksand and others. It's this type of bands I still listen the most too.

My favorite "punk" bands throughout the 2000's are probably The Bronx, fecked Up, Night Birds, The Thermals and OFF!, but there are a lot of older bands who still release excellent records.

God, I've become an old bastard

Ahh I've just thought of another band for you all to listen to Spanish Love Songs (Crap name) but Schmaltz was my album of 2018. No need to thank me :).

Joe Ninety

Planes Mistaken for Stars

These guys are from my town and one of my favourite bands, they did a reunion gig a couple of years ago in a venue here with maybe 150 people tops and it was mental, the guitarist got so pissed another guitarist from a local band had to fill in for him

Man. That's a name I've not heard in a long time. I heard them via P-Rock, many moons ago. Then totally forgot they existed.

For ages, I was convinced the singer was the guy from Consumed. Back when you couldn't just get an instant answer off the internet. They still sound similar to me...

Yeah I can see the similarity! suppose they were both part of that late 90’s early 00’s punk scene.

I do miss those days of actually buying cds, my dads mate owns a record shop here in Cheltenham and it used to feel a bit magical when all these small label releases used to show up, or the bands would actually come in with demos and the like. Different world it feels like. One of the 4ft fingers singers cuts my hair now

Just checking out The Story So Far properly for the first time, I've heard the self-titled album and Under Soil and Dirt at the moment. I'm enjoying what I've heard so far.

Edit: Proper Dose is my favourite album of theirs now I've listened to them all, like it a lot

They've never done a bad song. They're arguably the pick of the 'New wave' of pop /punk. Pretty much every pop/punk band aspires to be like them.

These are headlining Slam Dunk in the UK so I might get a ticket. Last time I saw them they played their whole So Right, Its Wrong album and nailed every song. Top top band.

The line up looks so good
I've been to the one in Leeds for the last 2 years. They've decided to move the festival from the city centre town hall area to some park way outside the city this year. It was so good because you could just go to a pub or grab a kebab in the town when there was nowt on you wanted to see. Almost certainly going to be no 4g in the middle of nowhere with thousands of people, which if you are on your own sucks. Probably won't go.

Ah that's a shame, seems weird to change it.

Both are a bit too far away from me really, even the South one, travel plus tickets would probably end up quite pricey, oh well.

Yeah they're hasn't been a song I've wanted to skip while going through their albums. Good stuff!
In my opinion What You Don't See is their best album but Proper Dose is bloody good too.

I'm going to Slam Dunk, the best line up yet. Last years line up was amazing too, although I didn't go as I was on holiday. With the exception of last year I've been to every Slam Dunk since 2014.
