Appointing Solskjaer was a mistake

I saw enough promise under Ole's first 15 games to know that he deserves a season and a couple of transfer windows to make his mark.

It's Woody and some players on our team that are a problem.

My faith in Ole is still there. Really feel like the players are exhausted from the season that has been like a roller coaster and the pressure/focus that has been on the team since the special needy one started to blame everyone but himself. I hope some good signings (and releases) and a rebuild in confidence will rejuvenate the players this summer so they can come back to find the good form from earlier this year next season. And also make some better pieces of training and replace people in the nutrition department so the players with obvious problems to eat professional can get some help with that, and the rest will be on a condition level that is higher than this year. This way the team will be stronger as a whole and the stamina better in general, which should make it possible to play beyond ten minutes..

I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he was sacked after the Cardiff game next week.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if he resigned.

I really don’t know where we go from here.

The mistake was appointing Ole at the time that they did.
One thing is for sure, if they had waited until the end of the season, Ole wouldn't even be on the short list.

Ole has won the lottery. No way he resigns.

The board sacking him requires a semblance of decisiveness. Not going to happen.

We are a rotten mess. We should be sat here looking forward to Pochettino.

Talks a good talk and that's it. Too pally with the players. Still seeing the non performers in the staring XI. Really dont understand why we have switched from a 4-3-3 when he took over to this diamond nonsense now which offers us no width. Dont understand why Herrera was dropped yesterday despite being MOTM versus Chelsea. Young, Jones, Matic, Sanchez get these out of our club.

Ole can rectify that by hitting a RESET button by clearing 12-14 players and make a fresh start so he will be remembered as a great manager cleared 6 years of mess and given UTD a fresh start.

Still he can write his own destiny but it's all down to him, How he respond in next 3 months would define his and club's future.

I believe 4-5 hard working, quality signings (not necessarily world class, just hard working, good quality players) in the first team, a full summer of pre-season, try get 6-7 out, we will be revitalised and fresh.

The decay at this club has grown and festered since LVGs transfers, and his style of play where he taught our midfield and attackers to create 1 chance and win 1-0. I never did like his signings or his style of play and we never recovered.

My mate has just put a bet on him not being in charge for the first game next season at 8/1. Lump on.

We need a significant rebuild, giving that responsibility to an inexperienced manager was already a risk. Giving it to a manager who has presided over our worst run of form in most of our lifetimes is madness.

If we can get someone with experience in then we should. If we need Ole's input on the united way appoint him No 2

Last night I 'dreamt' that he Quit after the Cardiff game (which we draw 0-0), saying 'I love this club too much to see it slide into decline, I don't think I'm the right person to turn the club around, so out of honesty I have offered my resignation'.

This is why a DOF is needed! We were supposed to appoint one before we hired Ole and it hasn't happened yet.

Only way he is sacked before next season is if we are under new ownership by then and Woodward is gone.

Woodward would be deemed insane and unemployable for ever more if he was the man to appoint a manager in March and sack him in May, especially given the three appointments he’s got wrong before this one.

Liverpool have created an identity with these players and it does show you how it can be done without reckless spending. Everyone of those would walk in to our current side yet I doubt - perhaps Mane aside - we were in for any of them when they were about to join Liverpool. Shaquiri is another astute purchase.

Ole is way out of his depth. I will always respect him as a legend of the club. But this job is rather too big for him. We should appoint Allegri.
And have more
Jose style boredom? No thanks

Allegri will want a huge transfer kitty and 3 years at least. You will give him that time, when we didn’t give the previous 3 that?

Like I’ve stated; it’s too late to poach one from another club.

A completely new one will be appointed. Rio, Fletch that kind of thing. Or Mitchell is just keeping his cards close to his chest. However you’d think that Leipzig would know by now.

It’s a mess

It was a mistake. But we are stuck with it now and he deserves time. We can’t keep chopping and changing. He should at least have two summers to sort the squad. Then assess. We don’t have a divine right to be successful, it has to be earned (or bought with oil money).

I want OGS to succeed I really do. I was one of the many clamouring for his appointment after we defeated PSG on the back of a fantastic resurgence of form. Talk of playing "the United Way" and his history with the club during our golden era won me over. However this morning I'm no longer looking at the situation through red tinted spectacles. Our recent play has been shambolic. While we can point the finger at the players, OGS has to shoulder some of the blame. As manager he picks the team and sets the side up for the game. Given the players at his disposal and the need to push for a top 4 spot nothing less than a victory over an already relegated Huddersfield was acceptable. Apart from the first 20 minutes what did we get? An embarrassing confection of dross - no apparent game plan, no energy, no invention, no team.

We clearly need a radical overhaul. The problem is we now have a manager who's only managerial experience is with a doomed Cardiff and a Norwegian League club Molde, other than that absolutely zilch. His history with the club alone just won't cut it given the size of the job on his hands. Having removed the red tinted specs it now seems laughable that a club of our stature has appointed as manager an individual who has no record of management at the highest level and at a time when someone of that calibre is needed more than ever. It's no good focussing on the past, football has moved on since Fergie's reign and we need someone who can tactically cross swords with Klopp and Guardiola. I'm not convinced that OGS is that person - his CV and recent results tend to show otherwise.

I'm a romantic at heart and would love to see OGS's appointment succeed but the harsh reality following a cold analysis of the situation is that it's going to end in tears.

Too many fans have been thinking with their hearts not their heads for too long. We're part of the problem too.

In the context of many fans wanting a return to the 'United way', then appointing Ole was not a mistake, he knows what is required and I suspect with his new team around him and maybe others to follow, he will succeed. However, doing it the 'United way' takes time and unfortunately in todays football world at a club like United, time is something you don't have!

Ole's been given a three year contract (so its said) so that's the time he's got to bring success, (or at least the promise of success) unless during those three seasons he gets us relegated, then all bets are off!

I think that is unfair. Fans have no impact on the decisions of the club, and being emotional and romantic is just part of the essence of being a fan of a football club. You take that away and we have no reason to follow any of these big money clubs. If you do a cold analysis on a lot of clubs you'll mostly find a cold business, with suspect owners etc. Not something you'd normally stand behind. Romanticism is all we've got.

SAF gave his recommendation, media did their part and finally Woodward appointed Solskjaer. The only thing the fans is guilty of is being happy with the results and performances of that initial period that got him the job. Every fan of the club deserved to be happy in that period.

Is it realistic to think he will be sacked after the Cardiff game? What are the odds for that? I just think this whole thing has become an embarrassment... I am so fond of Ole, but he needs to see his limitations. Personally, I think he should resign, restart with Molde and take it from there. He really is a fantastic manager, but I don't think he is the right fit for Utd. Especially with these players, the staff, etc.

I'm a bit confused by this. Yeah, we're in a bit of a slump right now having seemingly ran out of gas a bit, but what has Pochettino shown that makes us think he's the man for the job?

Spurs have gone from challenging to the title, to potentially dropping out of the top four entirely in the time Solskjaer has taken United from being over ten points adrift, to within touching distance until this last set of games. It's not the first time his Spurs side have shown a lack of staying power, and his repeated comments about success not being measured in trophies should surely be a bit of a red-flag for United fans?

Pochettino has secured CL football for Spurs for 4 seasons running, all whilst operating on a shoe-string budget (including signing no new players at all for the last 2 transfer windows) and in the face of 5 other teams who have vastly outspent Spurs in terms of both wages and net transfer spend. Plus he has taken Spurs to the CL SFs this season and might yet reach the final.

Moreover, for the last 2 seasons Spurs have had to play all or (this season) mostly all of our 'home' games away from our true home. And this season we've suffered from a much greater than average set of injuries.

In short, Pochettino has performed miracles at Spurs, given the circumstances.

United should have gone for him when you sacked LVG. You might have stood a chance of getting him then, but now it's too late: he's got more CL football to engage with next season, a full season in our new stadium to look forward to and what I expect will be a comparatively large transfer budget to spend this summer … so he not leaving now even if you sack Ole in the meantime.

Right, but what has worked for Spurs may not necessarily work for United. We already have enough fans who still, somehow, think that we could challenge next season. The job is a poisoned chalice as it is, without someone like Poch stepping in, who as well as he has done with Spurs, has not shown the crucial winning-edge that people seem to want. Moyes was considered to have done a brilliant job at Everton by many, but the biggest argument against him was having won nothing.

The bigger point of course is the one you raise at the end of the post, in that I've never believed him to be attainable in the first place. Real Madrid couldn't lure him away off the back of a third successive CL win. United in disarray didn't stand a hope in hell of landing him.

It was a mistake making him full time manager & if we’re not to waste another season we need to part ways as soon as possible- we need a proven manager with a vision for a particular style of football- no more living in the past of wanting ex players in charge- Is Klopp a Liverpool legend as a player? What did Pep do for City as a player?

We need to start afresh & get rid of a lot of players & have a fresh approach with a new manager

Gentle reminder: Your club were not founded in 1986. In fact, Manchester United existed (in some form) for 108 years before Fergie set foot in the place, and 63 years before Fergie was born. How many of those seasons did you win a major trophy?
My point: United are entitled to nothing in terms of trophies, so stop acting like like you are.
Who said or rather wrote that Manchester United are 'entitled' to trophies? You. The poster you replied to simply pointed out that Manchester United are in the business of winning trophies and even in slump years won them under Louis VG and Mourinho. As well I should add, during the unsuccessful managerial periods of Tommy Docherty and Dave Sexton as well as Big Ron Atkinson.

Let me guess - you are a Spurs or Everton fan. Still living off memories of 50 years or so ago.

If you want a manager that fits these players then you would have to search long and well. Ole will get this right. He is the right man for the job imo. Be patient. He has to start the exodus and be given enough of a budget and time to make this work. He is working on Mourinos players still and clearly the players are either not fit enough yet to play his way or they are plain lazy. So exodus and re-build it is. Hopefully management has balls enough to give him the time he has already said was needed to get to the the top again.

Hear Hear. I'd love to know how all the Ole naysayers know so much about his character behind closed managerial/dressing room doors.

He's 'too pal-ly with the players' apparently. How on earth do they know? Maybe they'd like Ole to tear strips off players publicly like Mourinho did - then again, maybe not as not being friendly enough or respectful enough in managerial terms to the players was deemed to be one of Jose's cardinal sins.

Ole as a player showed us his character. Nerves of steel, not known for saying too much about anything, willing to be the 'super sub' rather than leave for starting with another team when he was with United, loyal and discreet. Has been appointed for a short time and some United fans are at him now. Unbelievable.

I hope the United board is more rational and collected than some posters here.

I truly do hope that Ole is successful just as I did with the previous guys. But it is only hope backed up by little in the way of confidence. Their success or failure is our success or failure.
His job is now even more difficult and he goes into it with little experience to fall back on.
As to which Ole led United I await with interest.
Will it be the first part or the second part of his leadership.
Because if it is the second then we really will be in very deep trouble.

It's crazy wanting Ole sacked, before he even gets a chance to put his stamp on the team. At least give him a couple of transfer windows before he is hung.

Ooh yes, just what we need - another sacking of a manager at Manchester United!

This will be an especially useful tactic when it comes to trying to secure new players of proven character and ability. Why wouldn't they want to come to a United in turmoil that has just sacked its fourth manager since Sir Alex?

I'd argue its just as crazy to trust a guy who pretty much everyone agreed was under-qualified for the job on permeant bases a less then 6 months ago, who already seems to have lost the ability to motivate the current team (80% at least of which will be here next season), who has no real experience of top level transfers beyond cardiff (which was a complete disasster) and with no decent infrastructure at the club to support him in this process, to oversee what needs to be the biggest restructuring of the club since the 80's.

The crazy thing we did was appoint Ole before we saw whether it was just a great initial bounce(which it clearly was) or not.

Their is nothing wrong with releasing you acted a bit rashly and admitting you made a mistake.

It's both. The poor managers and woodward decided to appoint a relegation level manager.
A good one wouldn't come to such a badly run club. A bad one would do better in a well run club.

We literally just hired the most wanted manager in world football outside of Pep with our last hire and by all accounts managers were interested in the job to an extent. Woodward gave into nepotism and we're going to struggle for at least two more years because of it.
