And he is right. He says at the end recruiting an ex player (Rio) for DoF would be a shambles .
Absolutely.And he is right.
Ugh, that was all discussed and clarified. An absolutely separate point to the one he’s making .Ole is not best in class, that’s for certain
Is he still dead to that guy?
Wrong. No point in having a philosophy if you have players there who don’t buy into it or don’t fit it. Get rid of players like Sanchez, Rojo, Jones etc and go out and get players who fit the philosophy. He's right about so much and even admits he won't criticize the manager anyway. So that helps to set up the routine of dancing around Ole's qualifications.
But I still think he gets it slightly wrong at the end when he says the starting point is players who want to be there. The starting point is a footballing philosophy beyond grit, determination and workrate. You start with a clear modern philosophy and then you find players who fit that and will give maximum effort.
It’s not just a rant though is it? Everything he says is delivered from the POV of a passionate Utd fan. But it’s not knee jerk, it’s measured and targetedNah just another rant that comes down to Mourinho excuses
This is 100% correct. Is a director of football or technical Director just a glorified title for scout or talent spotter. Most companies who employ Directors do so with the best possible candidate. What qualifications does Rio have? i want the best for the club so in essence we should have the best possible candidate at the helm.He says at the end recruiting an ex player (Rio) for DoF would be a shambles .
Its a rant. I'm not saying none of it is right, but eventually it all comes back to him saying it wasnt Mourinho's fault and that he should have left if United didnt want to sign his players, as if Jose hadnt already signed 11 players for huge money and if there was still lots of work to do then clearly his signings were wastes of money. It’s not just a rant though is it? But he has been consistent on this, he hasn't suddenly changed his mind. Its a rant. Wrong. There is no point buying players who bleed red and then jamming them into whatever the footballing philosophy happens to be. That's idiotic. You build a way of playing which will naturally attract players to that style. Then you do the homework to select the ones with the right attitude. If you're shopping for players that want to be at Manchester United, you'll be in the bargain bin most of the time.Wrong. No point in having a philosophy if you have players there who don’t buy into it or don’t fit it. Get rid of players like Sanchez, Rojo, Jones etc and go out and get players who fit the philosophy.
No point keeping guys around who are working against you
Agree. As soon as you start disagreeing with the manager about who he wants and basically saying you know better, you are on a hiding to nothing. But he has been consistent on this, he hasn't suddenly changed his mind.
He stated last year that by employing someone like him, you need to back him and follow his ideas. That's what you sign up for. On one hand he brought his own downfall by his behaviour and Neville addresses this but on the other, the club didn't follow this 100%. I can see this. He never absolves Jose for his failings but levels criticism at Utd for the way they have carried on, their structure etc.
It's what many posters have stated on here, I don't see how it's anything to criticise him for
That's not what he's saying at all. He's questioning the structure of the club and (as there are no football people responsible for building the playing squad) who is qualified to question or veto signings the manager wants.
Well, it's what we all have said. Might be a good idea in principle but he has no experience...He says at the end recruiting an ex player (Rio) for DoF would be a shambles .
I agree about it should have been one out everyone out.I don't know anymore. Gary Neville is very passionate and articulate, and he obviously holds a special place in the hearts of United fans. I've personally always found myself agreeing with him on many occasions. But at the end of the day it's easier being a pundit than it is being in the shoes of the Manager or Head of a football club, isn't it...
Between Neville, the Caf and all the other TV personalities United's lack of performances have been attributed to pretty much every reason under the sun - it's the manager, it's Woodward, it's the Glazers, it's the structure, it's the players, it's the culture.
At some point you've got to admit to yourself honestly that it's all just conjecture and ranting, that none of us outside of the club (including Neville) actually *truly* know what the root cause of the problem is.
In everything that Gary said, the only thing which I thought was truly truly insightful and actionable - there are 5 people in charge of the footballing and recruiting decisions at Man Utd. These 5 people all came in with different managers and stayed on when said Manager was let go. No successful organisation (in football or elsewhere) has so many decision makers with such overlapping responsibilities and accountability.
That's the only thing I'd change. Streamline the decision making. Oh and get rid of Young.
